Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. OGLE-1999-BUL-32: the Longest Ever Microlensing Event -- Evidence for a Stellar Mass Black Hole?
We describe the discovery of the longest microlensing event ever observed,
OGLE-1999-BUL-32, also independently identified by the MACHO collaboration as
MACHO-99-BLG-22. This unique event has an Einstein radius crossing time of 641
days. The high quality data obtained with difference image analysis shows a
small but significant parallax signature. This parallax effect allows one to
determine the Einstein radius projected onto the observer plane as rE^hat ~
29.2AU. The transverse velocity projected onto the observer plane is about
79km/s. We argue that the lens is likely to be have a mass of at least a few
solar masses, i.e., it could be a stellar black hole. The black hole hypothesis
can be tested using the astrometric microlensing signature with the soon-to-be
installed Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Deep
X-ray and radio images may also be useful for revealing the nature of the

Comparison of Phytoplankton and Autotrophic Picoplankton Populations Over a 24-Hour Period From a Pond\u27s Surface and Subsurface Waters
Phytoplankton abundance and composition relationships within the surface layer changed over short time periods (4-6 hours) in comparison with more constant associations at 2 cm below the surface. Both strata had a diverse algal flora (\u3e50 taxa), but no distinct neuston assemblage characterized the surface layer algal composition over the 24-hour study. The similarity between the two strata indicated the floral composition of the surface layer came from the water column algae below the surface. Chlorophytes, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and cryptophytes represented the most abundant algal categories for both strata with a total mean phytoplankton abundance of 3,566 cells ml-1 at the surface and 40,532 cells ml-1 at 2 cm over the 24 hours. The autotrophic picoplankton had generally similar levels of abundance over time. Their mean abundance for the 24 hours was 469 and 599 X 103 cells ml-1 at the surface and 2 cm respectively
The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Monitoring of QSO 2237+0305
We present results from 2 years of monitoring of Huchra's lens (QSO
2237+0305) with the 1.3 m Warsaw telescope on Las Campanas, Chile. Photometry
in the V band was done using a newly developed method for image subtraction.
Reliable subtraction without Fourier division removes all complexities
associated with the presence of a bright lensing galaxy. With positions of
lensed images adopted from HST measurements it is relatively easy to fit the
variable part of the flux in this system, as opposed to modeling of the
underlying galaxy. For the first time we observed smooth light variation over a
period of a few months, which can be naturally attributed to microlensing. We
also describe automated software capable of real time analysis of the images of
QSO 2237+0305. It is expected that starting from the next observing season in
1999 an alert system will be implemented for high amplification events (HAE) in
this object. Time sampling and photometric accuracy achieved should be

The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Catalog of stellar proper motions in the OGLE-II Galactic bulge fields
We present a proper motion (\mu) catalogue of 5,080,236 stars in 49 Optical
Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) Galactic bulge (GB) fields,
covering a range of -11 deg. <l< 11 deg. and -6 deg. <b<3 deg., the total area
close to 11 square degrees. The proper motion measurements are based on 138 -
555 I-band images taken during four observing seasons: 1997-2000. The catalogue
stars are in the magnitude range 11 < I < 18 mag. In particular, the catalogue
includes Red Clump Giants (RCGs) and Red Giants in the GB, and main sequence
stars in the Galactic disc. The proper motions up to \mu = 500 mas/yr were
measured with the mean accuracy of 0.8-3.5 mas/yr, depending on the brightness
of a star. This catalogue may be useful for studying the kinematic of stars in

Generalised Decision Level Ensemble Method for Classifying Multi-media Data
In recent decades, multimedia data have been commonly generated and used in various domains, such as in healthcare and social media due to their ability of capturing rich information. But as they are unstructured and separated, how to fuse and integrate multimedia datasets and then learn from them eectively have been a main challenge to machine learning. We present a novel generalised decision level ensemble method (GDLEM) that combines the multimedia datasets at decision level. After extracting features from each of multimedia datasets separately, the method trains models independently on each media dataset and then employs a generalised selection function to choose the appropriate models to construct a heterogeneous ensemble. The selection function is dened as a weighted combination of two criteria: the accuracy of individual models and the diversity among the models. The framework is tested on multimedia data and compared with other heterogeneous ensembles. The results show that the GDLEM is more exible and eective
Ultrastructural response of arcuate nucleus neurons to fasting in aged rats
The arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARH) is involved in the control of
energy homeostasis. Leptin - an adipocyte derived hormone - is known to
act on the hypothalamic nuclei and thus to control body weight by food intake
reduction. Oxidative stress is believed to be implicated in leptin signalling. However,
its relevance for leptin-induced signal transduction within ARH remains
unclear. The goal of the study was to investigate the effect of fasting on morphological
alterations of the neuronal endoplasmic reticulum/Golgi network as
well as on the expression of leptin receptors in the arcuate nucleus of aged
rats. Male Wistar rats, aged 24 months, were fasted for 96 hours. The control
animals were fed ad libitum. Membranous whorls in the ARH neurons were
visualized using the electron microscopy technique. Leptin receptors in the
membranes of ARH neurons were determined immunohistochemically (IHC),
and soluble leptin receptors in the plasma as well as plasma isoprostanes were
quantified immunochemically (ELISA). An intense formation of membranous
whorls was observed, directly associated with the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic
reticulum, as well as lamellar bodies. Interestingly, the whorls were
often localized near a well-developed Golgi complex. Moreover, some Golgi
complexes displayed an early stage of whorl formation. Groups of residual
lipofuscin granules were found in the immediate proximity of the whorls. An
increased immunoreactivity with neuronal leptin receptors suggests that hypersensitive
neurons may still effectively respond to the fasting serum levels of
leptin, mediating ultrastructural transformation of ARH neurons during short-term fasting. Having observed a significant accumulation of lipofuscin granules
and a marked increase of total 8-isoprostane serum level in the fasting rats, we
hypothesize that signal transduction within the neurons of ARH is dependent
on oxidative stress phenomena
Analysis of RR Lyrae Stars in the Northern Sky Variability Survey
We use data from the Northern Sky Variability Survey (NSVS), obtained from
the first generation Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE-I), to
identify and study RR Lyrae variable stars in the solar neighborhood. We
initially identified 1197 RRab (RR0) candidate stars brighter than the ROTSE
median magnitude V = 14. Periods, amplitudes, and mean V magnitudes are
determined for a subset of 1188 RRab stars with well defined light curves.
Metallicities are determined for 589 stars by the Fourier parameter method and
by the relationship between period, amplitude, and [Fe/H]. We comment upon the
difficulties of clearly classifying RRc (RR1) variables in the NSVS dataset.
Distances to the RRab stars are calculated using an adopted
luminosity-metallicity relation with corrections for interstellar extinction.
The 589 RRab stars in our final sample are used to study the properties of the
RRab population within 5 kpc of the Sun. The Bailey diagram of period versus
amplitude shows that the largest component of this sample belongs to Oosterhoff
type I. Metal-rich ([Fe/H] > -1) RRab stars appear to be associated with the
Galactic disk. Our metal-rich RRab sample may include a thin disk as well as a
thick disk population, although the uncertainties are too large to establish
this. There is some evidence among the metal-rich RRab stars for a decline in
scale height with increasing [Fe/H], as was found by Layden (1995). The
distribution of RRab stars with -1 < [Fe/H] < -1.25 indicates that within this
metallicity range the RRab stars are a mixture of stars belonging to halo and

Vertex Reconstruction Using a Single Layer Silicon Detector
Typical vertex finding algorithms use reconstructed tracks, registered in a
multi-layer detector, which directly point to the common point of origin. A
detector with a single layer of silicon sensors registers the passage of
primary particles only in one place. Nevertheless, the information available
from these hits can also be used to estimate the vertex position, when the
geometrical properties of silicon sensors and the measured ionization energy
losses of the particles are fully exploited. In this paper the algorithm used
for this purpose in the PHOBOS experiment is described. The vertex
reconstruction performance is studied using simulations and compared with
results obtained from real data. The very large acceptance of a single-layered
multiplicity detector permits vertex reconstruction for low multiplicity events
where other methods, using small acceptance subdetectors, fail because of
