The Liminality of Temporary Agency Work: Exploring the Dimensions of Danish Temporary Agency Workers’ Liminal Experience
The concept of liminality refers to the experience to be betwixt-and-between social structures and the associated positions, statuses, and roles. We advance the original use of the concept by introducing the various meanings that the experience of being in a liminal state can take. Drawing on political anthropology we identify the dimensions of ‘types of subjects,’ ‘time,’ ‘space,’ and ‘scale’ in order to analytically unlock the liminal experience. Exemplifying our concept we present the findings from an own study of temporary agency workers in Denmark. Exploring the workers’ interpretations allows us to illustrate to what extent their employment situation constitutes a multi-dimensional liminal experience between established social structures and employment categories. The article emphasizes the complexity of the liminal experience. Theoretically and empirically, we show the many meanings along which liminality can unfold in organizational and work-related contexts. We argue that future studies should explore the various dimensions in other contexts of passages from one relatively stable state to another. In doing so, similarities and differences between various liminal experiences and the role the various dimensions play could be identified

Inspireret af Chris Rumfords teori om grænsearbejde fokuserer artiklen på måden, hvorpå den dansk-tyske grænse praktiseres og derigennem udleves af grænsependlere, der bor og arbejder på forskellige sider af den. I vores etnografiske studier har det vist sig, at måden, grænsependlere praktiserer og lever med grænser i deres hverdag på, udtrykker en mangfoldighed af grænser, der er i konstant dialog i pendlernes hverdagsliv. Særligt betydningen af mobilitet og det at være mobil, og af bevægelse mere generelt, er et væsentligt fundament for at udleve grænsen, men også nationale forskelle og identitetsdannelse og ikke mindst sproglig praksis danner grundlag for særlige måder at udleve grænser på. Det er vores indtryk at grænser og deres konsekvenser først forstås i lyset af den praksis, i hvilken de virkeliggøres, og at denne praksis aldrig er entydigt geopolitisk determineret, men nærmere åbner op for en konstant forhandling af, hvad grænser er

Graft preservation confers myocardial protection during coronary artery bypass grafting
BackgroundDuring on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (ONCAB), graft flushing for distal anastomoses testing also perfuses the downstream myocardium. This single-center retrospective study evaluated the impact of specific preservation solutions on myocardial protection during ONCAB.Materials and methodsBetween July 2019 and March 2020 either DuraGraft (DG) or 0.9% Saline/Biseko (SB) was applied to 272 ONCAB. Overall, 166 patients were propensity-matched into two groups. Cardiac enzymes [high-sensitive Troponin I (hs-TnI) and creatine kinase (CK)] were evaluated 7 days post-surgery.ResultsPost-surgery, hs-TnI values were significantly lower from 3 to 6 h (h) up to 4 days in the DG group: 3–6 h: 4,034 ng/L [IQR 1,853–8,654] vs. 5,532 ng/L [IQR 3,633—8,862], p = 0.05; 12–24 h: 2,420 ng/L [IQR 1,408–5,782] vs. 4,166 [IQR 2,052–8,624], p < 0.01; 2 days: 1,095 ng/L [IQR 479–2,311] vs. 1,564 ng/L [IQR 659–5,057], p = 0.02 and at 4 days: 488 ng/L [IQR 232–1,061] vs. 745 ng/L [IQR 319–1,820], p = 0.03. The maximum value: 4,151 ng/L [IQR 2,056–8,621] vs. 6,349 ng/L [IQR 4,061–12,664], p < 0.01 and the median area under the curve (AUC): 6,146 ng/L/24 h [IQR 3,121–13,248] vs. 10,735 ng/L/24 h [IQR 4,859–21,484], p = 0.02 were lower in the DG group. CK values were not significantly different between groups: maximum value 690 [IQR 417–947] vs. 631 [464–979], p = 0.61 and AUC 1,986 [1,226–2,899] vs. 2,081 [1,311–3,063], p = 0.37.ConclusionRepeated graft flushing with DG resulted in lower Troponin values post-surgery suggesting enhanced myocardial protection compared to SB. Additional studies are warranted to further assess the myocardial protection properties of DG
The Leipzig Prospective Vascular Ultrasound Registry in Radial Artery Catheterization Impact of Sheath Size on Vascular Complications
ObjectivesThis study investigated the impact of sheath size on the rate of radial artery occlusions (RAO) (primary objective) and other access site complications (hemorrhage, pseudoaneurysm, arteriovenous fistula) as secondary objectives after transradial coronary catheterization.BackgroundThe number of vascular access complications in the published data ranges from 5% to 38% after transradial catheterization.MethodsBetween November 2009 and August 2010, 455 patients 65.3 ± 10.9 years of age (62.2% male) with transradial access with 5-F (n = 153) or 6-F (n = 302) arterial sheaths were prospectively recruited. Duplex sonography was obtained in each patient before discharge. Patients with symptomatic RAO were treated with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), and a follow-up was performed.ResultsThe incidence of access site complications was 14.4% with 5-F sheaths compared with 33.1% with 6-F sheaths (p < 0.001). Radial artery occlusion occurred in 13.7% with 5-F sheaths compared with 30.5% with 6-F sheaths (p < 0.001). There was no difference between groups with regard to hemorrhage, pseudoaneurysms, or arteriovenous fistulas. Female sex, larger sheath size, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, and younger age independently predicted RAO in multivariate analysis. In total, 42.5% of patients with RAO were immediately symptomatic; another 7% became symptomatic within a mean of 4 days. Of patients with RAO, 59% were treated with LMWH. The recanalization rates were significantly higher in patients receiving LMWH compared with conventional therapy (55.6% vs. 13.5%, p < 0.001) after a mean of 14 days.ConclusionsThe incidence of RAO by vascular ultrasound was higher than expected from previous data, especially in patients who underwent the procedure with larger sheaths
Optical Identification of the ASCA Large Sky Survey
We present results of optical identification of the X-ray sources detected in
the ASCA Large Sky Survey. Optical spectroscopic observations were done for 34
X-ray sources which were detected with the SIS in the 2-7 keV band above 3.5
sigma. The sources are identified with 30 AGNs, 2 clusters of galaxies, and 1
galactic star. Only 1 source is still unidentified. The flux limit of the
sample corresponds to 1 x 10^{-13} erg s^{-1} cm^{-2} in the 2-10 keV band.
Based on the sample, the paper discusses optical and X-ray spectral
properties of the AGNs, contribution of the sources to the Cosmic X-ray
Background, and redshift and luminosity distributions of the AGNs. An
interesting result is that the redshift distribution of the AGNs suggests a
deficiency of high-redshift (0.5 10^{44}

Shedding Light on Proton and Electron Dynamics in [FeFe] Hydrogenases
[FeFe] hydrogenases are highly efficient catalysts for reversible dihydrogen evolution. H2 turnover involves different catalytic intermediates including a recently characterized hydride state of the active site (H-cluster). Applying cryogenic infrared and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy to an [FeFe] model hydrogenase from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (CrHydA1), we have discovered two new hydride intermediates and spectroscopic evidence for a bridging CO ligand in two reduced H-cluster states. Our study provides novel insights into these key intermediates, their relevance for the catalytic cycle of [FeFe] hydrogenase, and novel strategies for exploring these aspects in detail
