    Heavy-Light Meson Semileptonic Decays with Staggered Light Quarks

    We report on exploratory studies of heavy-light meson semileptonic decays using Asqtad light quarks, NRQCD heavy quarks and Symanzik improved glue on coarse quenched lattices. Oscillatory contributions to three-point correlators coming from the staggered light quarks are found to be handled well by Bayesian fitting methods. B meson decays to both the Goldstone pion and to one of the point-split non-Goldstone pions are investigated.     Stringer Bending Test Helps Diagnose and Prevent Cracks in the Space Shuttle's External Tank

    Space Shuttle Discovery's last mission, STS-133, was scheduled to launch on November 5, 2010. Just hours before liftoff, a hydrogen leak at an umbilical connection scrubbed the launch attempt. After the scrub, further inspection revealed a large crack in the foam insulation covering the External Tank, ET-137. Video replay of the launch attempt confirmed the crack first appeared as cryogenic propellants were being loaded into the ET. When the cracked foam was removed, technicians found the underlying stringer had two 9-inch-long cracks. Further inspection revealed a total of 5 of the 108 ET stringers had cracked. NASA and Lockheed Martin immediately launched an aggressive campaign to understand the cracks and repair the stringers in ET-137, targeting February 2011 as the new launch date for STS-133. Responsibilities for the various aspects of the investigation were widely distributed among NASA centers and organizations. This paper will focus on lab testing at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville, Alabama that was intended to replicate the stringer failure and gauge the effect of proposed countermeasures

    One-loop matching of heavy-light currents is carried out for a highly improved lattice action, including the effects of dimension 4 O(1/M) and O(a) operators. We use the NRQCD action for heavy quarks, the Asqtad improved naive action for light quarks, and the Symanzik improved glue action. As part of the matching procedure we also present results for the NRQCD self energy and for massless Asqtad quark wavefunction renormalization with improved glue.Comment: 25 pages, 3 eps-figure

    Active Semantic Electronic Medical Record

    The healthcare industry is rapidly advancing towards the widespread use of electronic medical records systems to manage the increasingly large amount of patient data and reduce medical errors. In addition to patient data there is a large amount of data describing procedures, treatments, diagnoses, drugs, insurance plans, coverage, formularies and the relationships between these data sets. While practices have benefited from the use of EMRs, infusing these essential programs with rich domain knowledge and rules can greatly enhance their performance and ability to support clinical decisions. Active Semantic Electronic Medical Record (ASEMR) application discussed here uses Semantic Web technologies to reduce medical errors, improve physician efficiency with accurate completion of patient charts, improve patient safety and satisfaction in medical practice, and improve billing due to more accurate coding. This results in practice efficiency and growth by enabling physicians to see more patients with improved care. ASEMR has been deployed and in daily use for managing all patient records at the Athens Heart Center since December 2005. This showcases an application of Semantic Web in health care, especially small clinics

    Orbitally excited and hybrid mesons from the lattice

    We discuss in general the construction of gauge-invariant non-local meson operators on the lattice. We use such operators to study the PP- and DD-wave mesons as well as hybrid mesons in quenched QCD, with quark masses near the strange quark mass. The resulting spectra are compared with experiment for the orbital excitations. For the states produced by gluonic excitations (hybrid mesons) we find evidence of mixing for non-exotic quantum numbers. We give predictions for masses of the spin-exotic hybrid mesons with $J^{PC}=1^{-+},\ 0^{+-},and, and 2^{+-}$.Comment: 31 pages, LATEX, 8 postscript figures. Reference adde

    We determine the mass and decay constant of the a1a_1 meson using Monte Carlo simulation of lattice QCD. We find Ma1=1250±80M_{a_1} = 1250 \pm 80 MeV and fa1=0.30±0.03 (GeV)2f_{a_1} = 0.30 \pm 0.03 ~({\rm GeV})^2, in good agreement with experiment.Comment: 9 page uu-encoded compressed postscript file. version appearing in Phys.     S-matrix approach to quantum gases in the unitary limit II: the three-dimensional case

    A new analytic treatment of three-dimensional homogeneous Bose and Fermi gases in the unitary limit of negative infinite scattering length is presented, based on the S-matrix approach to statistical mechanics we recently developed. The unitary limit occurs at a fixed point of the renormalization group with dynamical exponent z=2 where the S-matrix equals -1. For fermions we find T_c /T_F is approximately 0.1. For bosons we present evidence that the gas does not collapse, but rather has a critical point that is a strongly interacting form of Bose-Einstein condensation. This bosonic critical point occurs at n lambda^3 approximately 1.3 where n is the density and lambda the thermal wavelength, which is lower than the ideal gas value of 2.61.Comment: 26 pages, 16 figure

    Nonlinear analysis of spacecraft thermal models

    We study the differential equations of lumped-parameter models of spacecraft thermal control. Firstly, we consider a satellite model consisting of two isothermal parts (nodes): an outer part that absorbs heat from the environment as radiation of various types and radiates heat as a black-body, and an inner part that just dissipates heat at a constant rate. The resulting system of two nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the satellite's temperatures is analyzed with various methods, which prove that the temperatures approach a steady state if the heat input is constant, whereas they approach a limit cycle if it varies periodically. Secondly, we generalize those methods to study a many-node thermal model of a spacecraft: this model also has a stable steady state under constant heat inputs that becomes a limit cycle if the inputs vary periodically. Finally, we propose new numerical analyses of spacecraft thermal models based on our results, to complement the analyses normally carried out with commercial software packages.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figure
