Oxidative stress in a patient with diabetes known to decrease the activity of GSH-PX and increase the level of blood glucose. Glibenclamide is commonly used by patients with diabetes to lower the blood glucose. However, the long-term use of glibenclamide may induce the damage of pancreatic β-cells. The extract containing flavonoids and vitamin C of cardamoms leaf can reduce free radicals. The effect of cardamoms leaf extract on the enzymes activity and the level of blood glucose in diabetic rats is yet unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of cardamoms leaf extract administration in the GSH-PX activities and the level of blood glucose of diabetic rats. The method used in this study was experimental with completely randomized design (CRD). There were three groups with five replicates for each. The first group, diabetic rats as control group were given no treatment; the second group, diabetic rats were given cardamoms leaf extract at the dose of 100 mg/kg of body weight; the third group, the diabetic rat were given glibenclamide at the dose of 2 mg/kg of body weight. Blood samples were taken three times at 0, 7, and 14 days after each treatment. Parameters measured were GSH-PX activity and the level of blood glucose. The data were analyzed using ANOVA F-test with a confidence level of 95%. The result of this study showed that the cardamoms leaf extract treatment decreased the activity of GSH-PX activity and decreased the level of blood glucose at a significant level (p < 0.05) from 278.8 to 101.4 mg/dl

Prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) in Indonesia (13,13%) is high and tends to increase. One of the consequences of MS is endothelial dysfunction leading to cardiovascular disease which is inducted by oxidative stressand inflammation. The aim of the present research is to explore lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, and inflammatory marker level on metabolic syndrome women in Purwokerto. Thirty women with blood glucose level greater than normal, body mass index (BMI) > 25 kg/m2, 40-65 years of age were recruited as respondent through selection by a survey in Internal Medicine Polyclinic of Margono Soekarjo Hospital in Purwokerto. In respondents with blood glucose level > 200 mg/dL, total blood cholesterol level, high density lipoprotein, low density lipoprotein, malondialdehid, and plasma C-reactive protein were determined. It was found that the MS women were 50,4 years of age; BMI 31,89 kg/m2; blood glucose 219,4 mg/dL; total cholesterol 216,73 mg/dL; triglyceride 218,13 mg/dL; HDL 46,59 mg/dL; LDL 146,27mg/dL; MDA 2943,4 pmol/mL; C-RP 7,62 mg/L; and blood pressure 153/103 mmHg. It indicates that SM women experience dyslipidemia with low antioxidant and inflammation

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme which reduce anion superoxide radicals as well as known caused of diabetes. There are many natural additive was believed having capacity to repaired an antioxidant celluler status. Cardamom's stem were reported containing flavonoid and vitamin C which have been proven as in vitro antioxidant. There was no data showing its in vivo potency. This study aims to knoe the SOD activity of diabetes rats which were given cardamom stem extract (CSE) and glibenclamide. The research carried out with the use of experimentally Randomized Design Complete (RAL) by administering treatment on diabetes rat without CSE and glibenclamide as a control, consist of 100 mg/kg bodymass CSE and 2 mg/kg bodymass glibenclamide. The experiment consists of 3 treatments with 7 repetitions, blood sampling carried out experiments as much as 3 times with intervals of 7 days once. The data was analyzed using a variety of analysis (ANOVA). The result showed that the SOD activity increased from 4261 Unit/mg protein to 6604,668 Unit/mg protein (P<0.01) in diabetes rats treatment by CSE for 14 days

Diabetes is a disease characterized by abnormal insulin secretion, production, and insulin resistance. This condition cause oxidative stress which produce radical anion superoxide and decrease superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. SOD is an antioxidant enzyme that can reduces anion superoxide which caused by diabetes. Many natural medicine are believed having the capacity to improve antioxidant status in the body. Cardamom's leaf was reported containing flavonoids and vitamin C has been proven as in vitro antioxidant. However, there is no data that shows in vivo potency. This study was aimed to know the SOD activity of diabetic rats after treatment of cardamom's leaf extract. This research used experimental method consist 2 treatment and 5 repetitions. First treatment was diabetic rats given a dose of 100mg/kg body mass of cardamom's leaf extract (CLE) and second treatment was diabetic rats without CLE as control every day for 21 days. Blood sampling was performed 4 times : 0, 7, 14, 21 after treatment. Parameter measured were inhibition of ferricytokrom C reduction. Data were analyzed using unpaired t test. The result showed the highest SOD activity was 506.60 U/mg protein (P<0.01) in diabetic rats for 14 days CLE. The conclusions of this research are SOD activity increased after 14 days treatment of cardamom's leaf extract

Cardamom (Amomum Cardomomum) leaves has antioxidant in vitro, which was supported by a high flavonoids and vitamin C contents. It has been reported that antioxidants improved atherogenic index and insulin secretion. The aims of this study were to explore the potential of cardamom leaves extracts as atherogenicity and blood glucose levels controlling in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. The animal experiments were 45 rats (Rattus norvegicus L.) Sprague Dawley strain, male, aged 2-3 months, weighing 210-310 g. After acclimatization for 1 week, rats were fasted overnight and then induced alloxan monohydrate at a dose of 120 mg/kg body weight. One week later, the rats in the test blood glucose levels using the Nesco Multi Check Glucose, Kemel Int\u27l Corp. via the lateral tail vein of rats, blood glucose check attached to the equipment, and after 5 seconds glucose levels was read. Atherogenic index was determined by the formula: {( Chol-tot) –HDL}/HDL. Blood samples for analysis of total-cholesterol and chol-HDL taken from the eye vein, after the rat anesthetized using ketamine. Rats with blood glucose levels > 200 mg / dL, were selected as experimental animals, and then divided into 3 groups of 15 each. Group I, fed standard and cardamom leaves extract; Group II, fed standard and glibenclamide, whereas group III, only fed standard for 2 weeks. At the beginning diabetic, their weight dropped from 247.63+28.5 to 220.9+26.6 g (P0.05), the blood glucose levels decreased from 199.25+100.5 to 102.88+17 mg/dL (P<0.05), and the atherogenic index decreased from 0.61 to 0.38 (P< 0.05). Based on the result, it could be concluded that cardamom leaves extract is potential as anti-atherogenic, lowers blood glucose levels, and maintain weight loss in diabetic rats
