Performance Test and Structural Analysis of Cross-Flow Turbine
Myanmar is a developing country, the annual consumption of electricity has been increasing rapidly throughout the country. The main source of energy for generating electricity is hydropower because of her hilly regions with rivers and water-falls. Myanmar, where 75% of the populations live in rural area, has a low level of access to electricity. Small-scale hydropower production may be the most cost-effective way to supply electricity to remote villages that are not near transmission lines. The objectives of this research is to design low cost with high efficient cross-flow turbine especially for low head, to analyze the blade structural and modal of the turbine runner by using ANSYS 14.5 software, to construct the designed cross-flow turbine and test the performance of constructed cross-flow turbine in selected site location. The designed cross-flow turbine is capable of producing up to 300 watts AC power at the head of 6m and water flow rate of 0.009 m3/s.
Deep change in low-resource classrooms: Data-driven teacher professional development for educators from Burma using a choice-based approach
Under its democratically elected civilian government, teacher education in Burma was poised for change. The Burmese Ministry of Education, together with their development partners, had ushered in an era of system-wide education reform. This reform redefined the role of teachers, overhauled how teachers were to be trained and supported, and was on course to installing increased teacher accountability measures across the country. The centerpiece of reform efforts pertaining to educators was the Teacher Competency Standards Framework (TCSF), which was developed through a multi-year process culminating in the publication of robust “beginning level” indicators in 2019. This study evidences the existing competencies of Burmese educators employed in migrant learning centers on the Thai-Burma border through enrollment in a comprehensive in-service teacher training program which utilizes the TCSF. Participants (n=132) enrolled in a 10-month teacher training program based on TeacherFOCUS’s Learn-Choose-Use Approach. Overall, participants improved by 15.34% across ten observed and eight knowledge-based teaching competencies when comparing baseline and endline evaluation results. Significantly, teachers exhibited the greatest gains when presented with different options of how they could improve. This study affirms key aspects of teacher professional development that should be considered in low resource contexts: teacher ownership, transparent accountability measures, place-based instruction and coaching, high quality feedback and modeling, contextually relevant design, and strong professional relationships
Lifestyle Risk Behaviours and Nutritional Status Associated with Mental Health Problems among Myanmar Adolescents: Secondary Analysis of a Nationwide 2016 School Survey
Engaging in unhealthy lifestyles may be considered a risk factor for mental health problems, but there is limited evidence. This study aimed to identify the relationship between unhealthy lifestyles and mental health problems among Myanmar school-going adolescents. Global School Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) data from 2838 school-going adolescents from Myanmar were analysed. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were applied. After adjusting for confounding variables, adolescents who were seated for more than three hours per day had higher odds of loneliness, anxiety-induced sleep disturbance, suicide ideation, and suicide attempts compared to others. Moreover, students who ate fruit less than one time per day were more likely to experience anxiety-induced sleep disturbance and suicidal ideation. Being a current drinker was significantly associated with suicidal ideation and attempt. Obese students were more likely to feel lonely compared to normal weight students. Our study indicates there is a strong association between unhealthy lifestyle behaviours and mental health problems among school adolescents in Myanmar

Modified K-Means for Document Clustering System
In today’s era of World Wide Web, there is a
tremendous proliferation in the amount of digitized text
documents. As there is huge collection of documents on the web,
there is a need of grouping the set of documents into clusters.
Document clustering plays an important role in effectively
navigating and organizing the documents. K-Means clustering
algorithm is the most commonly document clustering algorithm
because it can be easily implemented and is the most efficient one
in terms of execution times. The major problem with this
algorithm is that it is quite sensitive to selection of initial cluster
centroids. The algorithm takes the initial cluster center arbitrarily
so it does not always promise good clustering results. If the initial
centroids are incorrectly determined, the remaining data points
with the same similarity scores may fall into the different clusters
instead of the same cluster. To overcome this problem, modified
K-Means approach is proposed to improve the quality of
clustering in this paper. Unlike the traditional K-Means
clustering, the proposed K-Means method can generate the most
compact and stable clustering results based on maximum distance
initial centroids points instead of random initial centroid points.
Moreover, the similar data points are clustered based on
maximum probability distribution of data points. Therefore, the
proposed method is more effective and converges to more accurate
clusters than original K-Means clustering method. In this paper,
experimental results are presented in F-measure using 20-News
Group standard dataset.</p
Determination of Elements and Radon in Water from Gold Mines at Bago Region
The purpose of this research is focused on the
point of view of public health. The measurements of
elements and radon concentration from Byut Myaung and
Kalain gold mines in Shwe Kyin Township at Bago Region
were recorded. Water samples were collected and analyzed
by using RAD7 detector in laboratory to get the record of
radon concentrations. It was found that the radon
concentration in water samples from Byut Myaung and
Kalain gold mines were 8.201.33 pCi/L and 4.840.68 pCi/L
respectively. When the water samples were analyzed with
Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), it can be seen the
concentrations of particular hazardous elements (K and Pb).
Potassium volume in water samples from Byut Myaung gold
mine was 1.49 mg/L and that from Kalain gold mine was
0.99 mg/L although the lead has been obtained in water
samples from both sites no trace of it was found. In this
research, the results were accepted the safety limit as
specified by World Health Organization (WHO) standard
An Investigation into Self-control and Interpersonal Communication Skills of Grade 9 Students in Amarapura Township
The main purpose of this study is to investigate self-control and
interpersonal communication skills of Grade 9 students in Amarapura
Township. This study aims to find out significant differences in selfcontrol and interpersonal communication skills of students by gender,
parents’ education level and school. Then, the relationship of selfcontrol and interpersonal communication skills of students were
explored. Finally, the influence of self-control on interpersonal
communication skills of students is also examined. Descriptive research
design and quantitative survey method were used. Self-control Scale
(SCS) developed by Tangney, Baumeister, & Boone (2004) and
Interpersonal Communication Inventory (ICI) developed by Bienvenu
(1974) were used as instruments. A total of 552 Grade 9 students from
four Basic Education High Schools in Amarapura Township were
selected by using simple random sampling technique. The results
revealed that there were no significant differences in self-control of the
students by gender and parents’ education levels. Concerning students’
interpersonal communication skills, gender and mother’s education
level were related factors of students’ interpersonal communication
skills whereas interpersonal communication skills do not depend on
father’s education level and school. The students’ self-control was
found to be positively correlated with interpersonal communication
skills. Self-control was also a moderate predictor of interpersonal
communication skills
Applying Mobile Agent in Criminal Information Retrieval System
Mobile Agent is a type of software system which acts “intelligently” on one’s behalf with the feature of autonomy, learning ability and most importantly mobility. Therefore, Mobile Agent technology is suitable for collecting data from police stations on behalf of police officers. In this article, Mobile Agent will be addressed as tools for retrieving Criminal record of the offenders. The offenders’ biography is an important data for police officers in deciding criminal case. So, Mobile Agent technology is used for transferring this data between police stations. At first, the authorized police officer from any police station can search for the desired biography of an offender in its own database. If it is not found, the officer can search it at remote sites by using Query Agent (QA).To get that biography, Query Agent (QA) migrates from a host station to remote stations, negotiates with Database Agent (DA) in there, and replies the required information to Police Officer Agent (POA). By implementing this system, several advantages such as time saving, reduce paper work, flexible structuring, dynamic content delivery and less manpower requirement can be achieved. Moreover, it can upgrade the traditional information retrieval system to e-government system. This paper describes the project architecture and its implementation that is based on IBM’s Aglets Workbench.</p
Students’ Perceptions of Campus Climate and Social Support to Adjustment to Education Colleges
The main purpose of this study was to investigate students’ perceptions of campus climate and social support to adjustment to education colleges. Participants of the study consisted of 900 student teachers (450males and 450females) selected from Yankin, Hlegu, Taungoo, Mandalay and Monywa Education Colleges. To find out student teachers’ perceptions of campus climate, perceived social support and students’ adaptation to college, the University Environment Scale (UES) developed by Gloria and Kurpius (1996), Perceived Social Support (PSS) developed by Schneider and Ward (2003) and Students Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ) by Baker and Siryk (1984) were used. Independent sample t-test, descriptive statistics, regression and correlation analysis were used for data analysis. In this study, all sub-scales of social support, perception of college environment and student adaptation to college were significantly correlated with one another. Backward multiple regression analyses revealed that the strongest predictors of student adaptation to college were affective perceived social support and perception of college environment
Human Activity Monitoring System Based on RGB-Depth Sensor
This paper is related to the domain of humanactivity recognition in both depth images andskeleton joints. In this paper, for the detection task, aRGB-D sensor (Microsoft Kinect) is used. To obtaindiscriminative features for action detection, combination of a depth shape features from the 3Dspace and joints features are investigated. Thedetection and classification of such features isaccomplished by the posture analysis technique, based on K-means and finally, activity recognitionare performed by means of HMMs built on the set ofknown postures to improve performance andaccuracy. The proposed system can be evaluated on anew dataset which contains five activities (standing, walking, sit down, lying and bending) and anotherpublic dataset MSRDailyActivity3D. The proposedsystem can be applied to the specific domain ofhealthcare system including home and hospital tokeep older adults functioning at higher levels andliving independently
