Advanced protective coating for superalloys
Superior oxidation protection for nickel-base alloys at temperatures up to 1367 K was obtained with cobalt-base alloy coating. Coating had 25 Cr, 14 Al, and 0.5 Y weight percent composition. Coating was applied by electron beam vapor deposition to thickness of 76 to 127 microns
CARTOGRAPHER: A tool for string diagrammatic reasoning
We introduce cartographer, a tool for editing and rewriting string diagrams of symmetric monoidal categories. Our approach is principled: the layout exploits the isomorphism between string diagrams and certain cospans of hypergraphs; the implementation of rewriting is based on the soundness and completeness of convex double-pushout rewriting for string diagram rewriting
Factorization fits to charmless strangeless B decays
We present fits to charmless strangeless hadronic B decay data for mean
branching ratios and CP-violating asymmetries using the QCD factorization model
of Beneke et al. Apart from one CP-violating parameter, the model gives a very
good representation of 26 measured data. We find the CKM angle alpha = (93.5
+/- 8.4 -1.3) degrees and to be quite stable to plausible "charming penguin"
corrections.Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, Minor changes to text, references adde
The Effect of Star Formation on Molecular Clouds in Dwarf Irregular Galaxies: IC 10 and NGC 6822
We have observed the 13CO J=2-1, 12CO J=2-1 and 12CO J=3-2 lines at a few
locations in the dwarf irregular galaxies IC 10 and NGC 6822 using the James
Clerk Maxwell Telescope. In addition, we report the first detection of the 13CO
J=3-2 transition in a Local Group galaxy. These low metallicity environments
appear to be porous to UV radiation and allow for more efficient heating of
molecular gas by nearby HII regions. The high 12CO J=3-2/J=2-1 ratio in NGC
6822 suggests that the 12CO emission is optically thin in this region. This
high line ratio is likely the result of its location inside a large HII region
with low metallicity and low gas content. In IC 10 we observe structures on a
variety of size scales that all appear to be gravitationally bound. This effect
may help explain the rather high star formation rate in IC 10.Comment: 20 pages with 6 ps figures, accepted for publication in The

The Spatial Distribution of Atomic Carbon Emission in the Giant Molecular Cloud NGC 604-2
We have mapped a giant molecular cloud in the giant HII region NGC 604 in M33
in the 492 GHz ^3P_1 -- ^3P_0 transition of neutral atomic carbon using the
James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find the distribution of the [CI] emission to
be asymmetric with respect to the CO J=1--0 emission, with the peak of the [CI]
emission offset towards the direction of the center of the HII region. In
addition, the line ratio I_{[CI]}/I_{CO} is highest (~ 0.2) facing the HII
region and lowest (< 0.1) away from it. These asymmetries indicate an edge-on
morphology where the [CI] emission is strongest on the side of the cloud facing
the center of the HII region, and not detected at all on the opposite side This
suggests that the sources of the incident flux creating C from the dissociation
of CO are the massive stars of the HII region. The lowest line ratios are
similar to what is observed in Galactic molecular clouds, while the highest are
similar to starburst galaxies and other regions of intense star formation. The
column density ratio, N(C)/N(H_2) is a few times 10^{-6}, in general agreement
with models of photodissociation regions.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 table

Shear-Wave Splitting and Mantle Flow Beneath the Colorado Plateau and its Boundary with the Great Basin
Shear-wave splitting measurements from SKS and SKKS phases show fast polarization azimuths that are subparallel to North American absolute plate motion within the central Rio Grande Rift (RGR) and Colorado Plateau (CP) through to the western rim of the CP, with anisotropy beneath the CP and central RGR showing a remarkably consistent pattern with a mean fast azimuth of 4 degrees +/- degrees 6 E of N. Approaching the rim from the southeast, fast anisotropic directions become north-northeast-south-southwest (NNE-SSW), rotate counter clockwise to north-south in the CP-GB transition, and then to NNW-SSE in the western Great Basin ( GB). This change is coincident with uppermost mantle S-wave velocity perturbations that vary from +4% beneath the western CP and the eastern edge of the Marysvale volcanic field to about -8% beneath the GB. Corresponding delay times average 1.5 sec beneath the central CP, decrease to approximately 0.8 sec near the CP-GB transition, and increase to about 1.2 sec beneath the GB. For the central CP, we suggest anisotropy predominantly controlled by North American plate motion above the asthenosphere. The observed pattern of westward-rotating anisotropy from the western CP through the CP-GB transition may be influenced to asthenospheric flow around a CP lithospheric keel and/or by vertical flow arising from edge-driven small-scale convection. The anisotropic transition from the CP to the GB thus marks a first-order change from absolute plate motion dominated lithosphere-asthenosphere shear to a new regime controlled by regional flow processes. The NNW-SSE anisotropic fast directions of split SKS waves in the eastern GB area are part of a broad circular pattern of seismic anisotropic fast direction in the central GB that has recently been hypothesized to be due to toroidal flow around the sinking Juan de Fuca-Gorda slab.National Science Foundation EAR 9706094, 9707188, 9707190, 0207812Los Alamos National Laboratory Institute of Geophysics and Planetary PhysicsNational Science Foundation Cooperative EAR-000430Department of Energy National Nuclear Security AdministrationGeological Science
Dynamical instabilities of Bose-Einstein condensates at the band-edge in one-dimensional optical lattices
We report on experiments that demonstrate dynamical instability in a
Bose-Einstein condensate at the band-edge of a one-dimensional optical lattice.
The instability manifests as rapid depletion of the condensate and conversion
to a thermal cloud. We consider the collisional processes that can occur in
such a system, and perform numerical modeling of the experiments using both a
mean-field and beyond mean-field approach. We compare our numerical results to
the experimental data, and find that the Gross-Pitaevskii equation is not able
to describe this experiment. Our beyond mean-field approach, known as the
truncated Wigner method, allows us to make quantitative predictions for the
processes of parametric growth and thermalization that are observed in the
laboratory, and we find good agreement with the experimental results.Comment: v2: Added several reference
Initial bound state studies in light-front QCD
We present the first numerical QCD bound state calculation based on a
renormalization group-improved light-front Hamiltonian formalism. The QCD
Hamiltonian is determined to second order in the coupling, and it includes
two-body confining interactions. We make a momentum expansion, obtaining an
equal-time-like Schrodinger equation. This is solved for quark-antiquark
constituent states, and we obtain a set of self-consistent parameters by
fitting B meson spectra.Comment: 38 pages, latex, 5 latex figures include
Two-channel Kondo model as a generalized one-dimensional inverse square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin model
Majorana fermion representations of the algebra associated with spin, charge,
and flavor currents have been used to transform the two-channel Kondo
Hamiltonian. Using a path integral formulation, we derive a reduced effective
action with long-range impurity spin-spin interactions at different imaginary
times. In the semiclassical limit, it is equivalent to a one-dimensional
Heisenberg spin chain with two-spin, three-spin, etc. long-range interactions,
as a generalization of the inverse-square long-range Haldane-Shastry spin
model. In this representation the elementary excitations are "semions", and the
non-Fermi-liquid low-energy properties of the two-channel Kondo model are
recovered.Comment: 4 pages, no figure, to be published in J. Phys.: Condens. Matter,
