Avco Lycoming quiet clean general aviation turbofan engine

    Get PDF
A fan module was developed using an existing turboshaft engine. The fan was designed using the latest in large engine noise control technology. A mixer was added to reduce the already low exhaust gas velocity. A nacelle incorporating sound treatment was provided for the test engine. A noise prediction model was used through the design process to evaluate the various design alternatives. Acoustic tests were then made to verify the prediction and identify the noise characteristics of the fan, core, jet, and sound treatment. Analysis of the recorded data yielded close agreement with the expected results. Core noise, as was expected, was the predominant source of noise for the quiet clean general aviation turbofan (QCGAT) engine. Flyover noise predictions were made which indicated that the Avco Lycoming QCGAT engine would meet the goals set for the QCGAT program

A visual thesis? techniques for reporting practice-led research

    Get PDF
This paper describes an approach taken to the use of visual material as a significant part of PhD thesis in an Industrial Design research project. The aspiration to make creative work central to the thesis has been debated in a wide range of disciplines, but there are few examples of successful practice, especially in design. The authors sought to make visual material central to the process of developing a PhD thesis and worked with a research student to put this into practice. The process was beneficial to both the student and his audience and it is hoped that this approach provides a starting point for further development of practice-based research</p

YF 102 in-duct combustor noise measurement, volume 1

    Get PDF
The combustion chamber from a YF 102 gas turbine engine was instrumented with semi-infinite acoustic wave guide probes and installed in a test rig to complement the combustor noise test. These combustor rig tests are described and the recorded data are listed. Internal dynamic pressure level measurements were made at the same locations and at the same operating conditions of the NASA YF 102 test. In addition, the combustor was operated at various off-designed points where one parameter at a time was varied. Background noise recordings were made to determine the magnitude of facility or test rig noise present

    Vehicular impact absorption system

    Get PDF
An improved vehicular impact absorption system characterized by a plurality of aligned crash cushions of substantially cubic configuration is described. Each consists of a plurality of voided aluminum beverage cans arranged in substantial parallelism within a plurality of superimposed tiers and a covering envelope formed of metal hardware cloth. A plurality of cables is extended through the cushions in substantial parallelism with an axis of alignment for the cushions adapted to be anchored at each of the opposite end thereof

Blackspot Location and Recommendation to Reduce Number and Severity of Accidents on Purbaleunyi Toll Road

Toll roads, as land transportation infrastructure, have an important role in Indonesia. With a high number of road crashes in Indonesia, with about 40,000 people die on the road each year, the determination of blackspot locations is crucial. The aim of this study is to analyze blackspot location on a toll road in Indonesia and, furthermore, to provide recommendations in order to reduce number and severity of accident. A case study is carried out on a toll road, named Purbaleunyi Toll Road, in West Java. Accident rate value and UCL method are used in this study to determine blackspot locations. The results indicated that there are many blackspot locations along the toll road and recommended solutions provided are adherence to traffic regulation, adherence to vehicle worthiness, dissemination of road safety importance to road users, and the implementation of blackspot treatments continuously

    Experimental making in multi-disciplinary research

    Get PDF
For the past 3 years, Graham Whiteley has been using making in a project to develop a mechanical analogy for the human skeletal arm to inform the future development of prostheses and other artefacts. Other aspects of the work such as use of drawings and the use of a principled approach in the absence of concrete design goals have been documented elsewhere, this paper concentrates on the central role of making in the process. The paper will discuss the role of making in multi-disciplinary research; craft skills and resources appropriate to each stage of a practice centred research project in this area; the use of models in an iterative experimental investigation and the value of models in eliciting knowledge from a broad community of interested parties and experts.</p

    Explaining Explanation

It is not a particularly hard thing to want or seek explanations. In fact, explanations seem to be a large and natural part of our cognitive lives. Children ask why and how questions very early in development and seem genuinely to want some sort of answer, despite our often being poorly equipped to provide them at the appropriate level of sophistication and detail. We seek and receive explanations in every sphere of our adult lives, whether it be to understand why a friendship has foundered, why a car will not start, or why ice expands when it freezes. Moreover, correctly or incorrectly, most of the time we think we know when we have or have not received a good explanation. There is a sense both that a given, successful explanation satisfies a cognitive need, and that a questionable or dubious explanation does not. There are also compelling intuitions about what make good explanations in terms of their form, that is, a sense of when they are structured correctly
