    Das Intrarotspektrum von matrixisoliertem SFCI

The new compound SFCl was obtained by UV photolysis of FC(O)SCl in rare gas matrix and by UV photolysis of Cl2/SF3SF in the gas phase. Isotopic substitution verifies the molecular identity. Eight frequencies from three isotropic molecules determine the force constants fSF = 4.30 and fscl = 2.90 102N/m

Die Wechselwirkung von N3F mit Lewis-Säuren und HF. N3F als möglicher Vorläufer für die Synthese von N3+-Salzen

Triazadienyl fluoride, N3F, forms stable adducts with BF3 and AsF5 at low temperatures, as demonstrated by infrared measurements. The Lewis acids are bonded to the Nα-atom of N3F, as deduced from the data for 15N-isotopically enriched N3F. The basicity of N3F is comparable to that of ethine and ethene, according to the HF stretching frequency of the N3F/HF complex isolated in an argon matrix. Despite the low NF bond energy (< 150 kJ/mol), abstraction of the fluoride ion and formation of an N3+ salt was not possible. The different behavior of N3F and ClN3 towards Lewis acids is discussed

Matrix samples of F-CO-N3, and X-CO-NF2 (X = H, NF2, CF3) were photolyzed by mercury arc light and the new infrared bands at 2172, 861, 695, 646, 529 cm-1 assigned to the F-NCO molecule. 15N isotopic substitution confirmed the assignment of the IR bands of the new compound

Spitzer Mid-Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

    Get PDF
We have observed 14 nearby (z<0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6-24 microns. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.Comment: To appear in the conference proceedings for Spitzer New Views of the Universe, held Nov. 2004 in Pasadena, C

OBLIGATORY JURISDICTION OF THE SUPREME COURT: APPEALS FROM STATE COURTS UNDER SECTION 237(a) OF THE JUDICIAL CODE

    Get PDF
In two ways, a case decided by the state court of last resort may come to the Supreme Court of the United States: by certiorari, or by appeal. Certiorari is discretionary; and the considerations which will lead the Court to grant a writ of certiorari are set out in Rule 38 of the Supreme Court Rules, and are well-known to the practicing bar. Appeal, however, is directed to the obligatory jurisdiction of the Court. Rule 12 merely sets out the procedure to be followed in seeking an appeal; and for his decision as to whether he has substantive basis for an appeal, the practitioner must turn to the Judicial Code and to the cases interpreting it

The appearance potentials of fragment ions from SF5Cl have been measured in the energy range 12 - 20 eV by means of photoionization mass spectrometry. From these data, the ionization potential of SF5 comes to 9.65 eV

Improvement of paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis after systemic treatment with rituximab in a patient with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia

Limbic encephalitis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system characterized by diverse neurologic symptoms including mnestic disturbances, hallucinations, and seizures as well as behavioral symptoms like depression, personality changes, and acute confusional states resembling dementia. Several antibodies have been described in the pathogenesis of limbic encephalitis. It is often a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, or Hodgkin's lymphoma among others. Here, we report a patient with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL), presenting with otherwise unexplained neurologic symptoms consistent with limbic encephalitis. Despite intensive diagnostic procedures, no causing agent could be identified. Pleocytosis consisting of T cells was detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We initiated anti-B-cell therapy with Rituximab for B-CLL with quick and durable resolution of symptoms. We speculate that disruption of interaction between autoreactive T and malignant B cells is responsible for the therapeutic effect of Rituximab

Influence of density and temperature on the microscopic structure and the segmental relaxation of polybutadiene

We investigate the influence of temperature and density on the local structure and the dynamics of polybutadiene by controlling both hydrostatic pressure and temperature in polarized neutron diffraction experiments on deuterated polybutadiene and in inelastic incoherent scattering experiments on protonated polybutadiene. We observe that the static structure factor S(Q) does not change along macroscopic isochores. This behavior is contrary to the relaxations observed on the nanosecond and picosecond time scales and viewed by the dynamic incoherent scattering law S(Q,omega), which differ strongly along the same thermodynamic path. We conclude that the static behavior, i.e., S(Q), is dominated by macroscopic density changes, similar to the vibrational excitations in the meV range. However, the relaxation dynamics is more sensitive to thermal energy changes. This is confirmed by the finding that lines of identical relaxation behavior (in time, shape, and Q dependence), isochrones on the 10(-9) sec time scale, clearly cross the constant density lines in the (P,T) plane. Concerning S(Q), we can reasonably relate the variation of the main-peak position to the average neighbor chain distance and deduce crude microscopic thermal expansion and compressibility coefficients. In the low-Q regime, the observed pressure and temperature variation of S(Q) exceeds the compressibility contribution and suggests the existence of additional scattering, which might originate from structural correlations arising at higher temperature and low pressure

BE Ursae Majoris: A detached binary with a unique reprocessing spectrum

    Get PDF
New infrared photometry, optical and UV spectrophotometry, and a photographic ephemeris are presented for the detached binary BE UMa. Results show the primary to be a DO white dwarf with an effective temperature of 80,000 + or - 15,000 K and a mass of 0.6 + or - 0.1 solar masses. No evidence is found for variability of the primary. The main sequence secondary star is shown to be of early M spectral type, with a formal range of M1 to M5 being possible. A reflection effect in reprocessed line and continuum radiation is produced by EUV radiation from the primary incident on the secondary atmosphere. It is suggested that the temperature of the reprocessed component of the secondary's atmosphere is in the 5000 to 8500 K range, and that emission lines of decreasing ionization form deeper in the irradiated envelope. Relatively narrow He II and high excitation metal lines are formed from recombination and continuum fluorescence processes

    Abundances in galactic H2 regions, 3: G25.4-0.2, G45.5+0.06, M8, S159 and DR22

Measurements of the ARII (6.99 microns), ArIII (8.99 microns), NeII (12.81 microns), SIII (18.71 microns), and SIV (10.51 microns) lines are presented for five compact HII regions along with continuum spectroscopy. From these data and radio data, lower limits to the elemental abundances of Ar, S, and Ne were deduced. The complex G25.4-0.2 is only 5.5 kpc from the galactic center, and is considerably overabundant in all these elements. Complex G45.5+0.06 is at seven kpc from the galactic center, and appears to be approximately consistent with solar abundance. The complex S159 in the Perseus Arm, at 12 kpc from the galactic center, has solar abundance, while M8 in the solar neighborhood may be somewhat overabundant in Ar and Ne. Complex DR 22, at 10 kpc from the galactic center in the Cygnus Arm, is overabundant in Ar. A summary of results from a series of papers on abundances is given
