Students of everyday life are making a significant contribution to understanding the manner in which persons carry out their daily activities. However, they have overlooked the impact of bureaucratic organizations on persons in various social settings. Based upon intensive in-depth interviews of sixty Mexican American elderly in Dallas, Texas, the research revealed numerous barriers to their utilization of health and social services and demonstrates why one must consider carefully how health and social service organizations affect the lives of elderly Mexican Americans. One must also recognize that the quality of life of Mexican American elders can be improved by increasing their knowledge of how formal organizations function

An Analysis and Evaluation of the American Electoral College

The Constitutional Convention of 1787 was greatly divided over the question of how to select the new nation\u27s chief executive. The method finally adopted was a compromise between direct election and election by the national legislature and provided that individual states, as they saw fit, choose electors equal to the total number of Senators and Representatives. From the beginning, most of delegates considered the proposal awkward and irrational almost to the point of absurdity, but as they argued about it, they became convinced that it was then the only plan which could overcome the objections raised by other methods. The Convention had barely adjourned, however, when dissatisfaction over election of the President arose once again. Reform efforts began in the earliest Congresses. In the past one hundred and eighty years, more than 1000 amendments—perhaps more than on any other subject—have been introduced. These may be divided into two distinct classifications—direct and indirect methods of election. These may be divided into two distinct classifications—direct and indirect methods of election. From the district system proposed in the early 19th century to the proportional system advanced most prominently after World War II, each of the direct proposals has had its day and has been found wanting. It has become clear that other indirect methods of election would merely turn in some old problems for some new ones. The present system, however, is in serious need of reform. Its dangers are well documented. Failure of electors to vote in accordance with the desires of the voters and the present allocation of electoral votes makes it possible that under the present system a President can be elected who is not the choice of a majority of the citizens. Furthermore, the present system provides for an election in the House of Representatives if no candidate received the necessary 270 electoral votes. In a House election, each state casts one vote regardless of population. In view of these factors, the electoral college is an undemocratic institution, an historic remnant of a nation vastly different from the United States in the twentieth century. Through this nation\u27s years of development, the ideal of popular choice has become the most deeply ingrained of our governmental principles. Through our national experience we have learned that there is no safer or better way to elect our public officials. No matter how wisely or foolishly the American people choose their President, he is still their President. The electoral college should therefore be amended to insure that the chief executive is the voice of all 200 million Americans in practice as well as in theory. Only one type of proposed reform can claim to give the people this voice without creating other problems in the election of the President. It is the direct popular vote proposal under which each citizen\u27s vote regardless of where it is cast, would count equally with all other votes. The candidate receiving a majority or plurality, as decided by Congress, would be the new President. A run-off election would replace election by the House of Representatives if no candidate received the specified number of votes. No one, of course, can guarantee that direct election would never involve risks in the election of the President, but if one\u27s premise is based upon an overriding consideration of democracy, the risk seems worth taking

Isolation and identification of the conidial germination factor of Neurospora crassa

    Get PDF
The germination-essential substance (germination factor [GF]) that is lost from conidia of Neurospora crassa on exposure to solutions of low water activity has been isolated and identified as a group of iron-transport compounds, or siderochromes. The principal siderochrome of conidia is ferricrocin, a cyclic hexapeptide. A closely related substance, ferrichrome C, is tentatively identified as a minor constituent. The same substances are also present in extracts of mycelium along with small amounts of a third siderochrome, which has not been identified. The GF activity of culture filtrates is due to coprogen, the only siderochrome previously identified with N. crassa

Student Internships in Extension: Strategies for Success for the Agent and the Student

    Get PDF
The Extension internship provides a valuable learning experience for the agent and the intern. The intern receives a lesson in real-world-learning ; for many agents, supervising an intern is an opportunity to update their knowledge and skills. Too often the intern and the agent are not a good match, leaving both parties dissatisfied and disappointed. This article offers three perspectives of the internship experience, that of the agent, the intern, and campus supervisor. We offer suggestions for strategies agents can use to enhance the internship experience for all involved and remind the reader that internships are an excellent recruiting tool

HIV Treatment Outcome Disparities: Using Web-based Technology to Promote Adherence and Engagement with Care among African American Patients

Ethnic minorities continue to be disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic and those individuals living with the virus experience differential outcomes in treatment. Technology-based approaches have been used to address a variety of health problems, but few studies have focused on the application of these approaches in addressing HIV treatment disparities. Using a sample of African-American patients identified as lost to follow-up for HIV treatment (n=33), this study examined the feasibility and acceptability of a web-based program designed to assess and improve treatment engagement. Participants were randomly assigned to either the web-based assessment program or the control group. Measures of behavior change intentions and motivation were administered to all participants. Assessment group participants completed additional measures to determine personal reactions and perceived credibility related to the web-based program. Findings indicated that assessment group participants reported significantly higher behavior change intentions than those in the control group. In addition, assessment group participants viewed the program favorably and rated it highly as a credible approach to improve their adherence and engagement with care. Findings from this pilot study indicate that the web-based program is feasible and acceptable as a clinical tool to improve engagement among African American patients with HIV
