Description of the Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment (SCOLE) facility
A laboratory facility for the study of control laws for large flexible spacecraft is described. The facility fulfills the requirements of the Spacecraft Control Laboratory Experiment (SCOLE) design challenge for a laboratory experiment, which will allow slew maneuvers and pointing operations. The structural apparatus is described in detail sufficient for modelling purposes. The sensor and actuator types and characteristics are described so that identification and control algorithms may be designed. The control implementation computer and real-time subroutines are also described
CVD aluminiding process for producing a modified platinum aluminide bond coat for improved high temperature performance
A method of depositing by chemical vapor deposition a modified platinum aluminide diffusion coating onto a superalloy substrate comprising the steps of applying a layer of a platinum group metal to the superalloy substrate; passing an externally generated aluminum halide gas through an internal gas generator which is integral with a retort, the internal gas generator generating a modified halide gas; and co-depositing aluminum and modifier onto the superalloy substrate. In one form, the modified halide gas is hafnium chloride and the modifier is hafnium with the modified platinum aluminum bond coat comprising a single phase additive layer of platinum aluminide with at least about 0.5 percent hafnium by weight percent and about 1 to about 15 weight percent of hafnium in the boundary between a diffusion layer and the additive layer. Age and growth of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) caught by the Hawaii-based pelagic longline fishery
We verified the age and growth of swordfish (Xiphias gla-dius) by comparing ages determined from annuli in fin ray sections with daily growth increments in otoliths. Growth of swordfish of exploitable sizes is described on the basis of annuli present in cross sections of the second ray of the first anal fins of 1292 specimens (60−260 cm eye-to-fork length, EFL) caught in the region of the Hawaii-based pelagic longline fishery. The position of the initial fin ray annulus of swordfish was verified for the first time with the use of scanning electron micrographs of presumed daily growth increments present in the otoliths of juveniles. Fish growth through age 7 was validated by marginal increment analysis. Faster growth of females was confirmed, and the standard von Bertalanffy growth model was
identified as the most parsimonious for describing growth in length for fish greater than 60 cm EFL. The observed growth of three fish, a year-old in size when first caught and then recaptured from 364 to1490 days later, is consistent with modeled growth for fish of this size range. Our novel approach to verifying age and growth should increase confidence in conducting an age-structured stock assessment for swordfish in the North Pacific Ocean
A Rapid and Computationally Inexpensive Method to Virtually Implant Current and Next-Generation Stents into Subject-Specific Computational Fluid Dynamics Models
Computational modeling is often used to quantify hemodynamic alterations induced by stenting, but frequently uses simplified device or vascular representations. Based on a series of Boolean operations, we developed an efficient and robust method for assessing the influence of current and next-generation stents on local hemodynamics and vascular biomechanics quantified by computational fluid dynamics. Stent designs were parameterized to allow easy control over design features including the number, width and circumferential or longitudinal spacing of struts, as well as the implantation diameter and overall length. The approach allowed stents to be automatically regenerated for rapid analysis of the contribution of design features to resulting hemodynamic alterations. The applicability of the method was demonstrated with patient-specific models of a stented coronary artery bifurcation and basilar trunk aneurysm constructed from medical imaging data. In the coronary bifurcation, we analyzed the hemodynamic difference between closed-cell and open-cell stent geometries. We investigated the impact of decreased strut size in stents with a constant porosity for increasing flow stasis within the stented basilar aneurysm model. These examples demonstrate the current method can be used to investigate differences in stent performance in complex vascular beds for a variety of stenting procedures and clinical scenarios
The Ages of the Thin Disk, Thick Disk, and the Halo from Nearby White Dwarfs
We present a detailed analysis of the white dwarf luminosity functions
derived from the local 40 pc sample and the deep proper motion catalog of Munn
et al (2014, 2017). Many of the previous studies ignored the contribution of
thick disk white dwarfs to the Galactic disk luminosity function, which results
in an erronous age measurement. We demonstrate that the ratio of thick/thin
disk white dwarfs is roughly 20\% in the local sample. Simultaneously fitting
for both disk components, we derive ages of 6.8-7.0 Gyr for the thin disk and
8.7 0.1 Gyr for the thick disk from the local 40 pc sample. Similarly, we
derive ages of 7.4-8.2 Gyr for the thin disk and 9.5-9.9 Gyr for the thick disk
from the deep proper motion catalog, which shows no evidence of a deviation
from a constant star formation rate in the past 2.5 Gyr. We constrain the time
difference between the onset of star formation in the thin disk and the thick
disk to be Gyr. The faint end of the luminosity function
for the halo white dwarfs is less constrained, resulting in an age estimate of
Gyr for the Galactic inner halo. This is the first time
ages for all three major components of the Galaxy are obtained from a sample of
field white dwarfs that is large enough to contain significant numbers of disk
and halo objects. The resultant ages agree reasonably well with the age
estimates for the oldest open and globular clusters.Comment: ApJ, in pres
