    A simplification of rigorous atmospheric raytracing based on judicious rectilinear paths for near-surface GNSS reflectometry

    Atmospheric delays are known to cause biases in Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) altimetry applications, such as for sea-level monitoring. The main quantity of interest is the reflection-minus-direct or interferometric atmospheric delay. Recently, we have presented a rigorous raytracing procedure to account for linear and angular refraction in conjunction with reflection as observed from near-surface platforms. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of simplifying the ray trajectory by imposing a rectilinear wave propagation model. Two variants were assessed, based on the apparent or refracted satellite direction on the one hand and the geometric or vacuum conditions on the other hand. The former was shown to agree with rigorous results in terms of interferometric radio length while the latter agreed in terms of the interferometric vacuum distance. Upon a judicious combination of the best aspects of the two rectilinear cases, we have defined a mixed variant with excellent agreement with rigorous raytracing in terms of interferometric atmospheric delay. We further showed that mapping functions developed for GNSS positioning cannot be reused for GNSS-R purposes without adaptations. Otherwise, the total atmospheric delay may be underestimated by up to 50% at low elevation angles. The present work facilitates the adaptation of existing atmospheric raytracing software for GNSS-R purposes

    The neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs or Batten disease) are a group of inherited, fatal neurodegenerative disorders of childhood. In these disorders, glial (microglial and astrocyte) activation typically occurs early in disease progression and predicts where neuron loss subsequently occurs. We have found that in the most common juvenile form of NCL (CLN3 disease or JNCL) this glial response is less pronounced in both mouse models and human autopsy material, with the morphological transformation of both astrocytes and microglia severely attenuated or delayed. To investigate their properties, we isolated glia and neurons from Cln3-deficient mice and studied their basic biology in culture. Upon stimulation, both Cln3-deficient astrocytes and microglia also showed an attenuated ability to transform morphologically, and an altered protein secretion profile. These defects were more pronounced in astrocytes, including the reduced secretion of a range of neuroprotective factors, mitogens, chemokines and cytokines, in addition to impaired calcium signalling and glutamate clearance. Cln3-deficient neurons also displayed an abnormal organization of their neurites. Most importantly, using a co-culture system, Cln3-deficient astrocytes and microglia had a negative impact on the survival and morphology of both Cln3-deficient and wildtype neurons, but these effects were largely reversed by growing mutant neurons with healthy glia. These data provide evidence that CLN3 disease astrocytes are functionally compromised. Together with microglia, they may play an active role in neuron loss in this disorder and can be considered as potential targets for therapeutic interventions

    Applying psychological type theory to cathedral visitors : a case study of two cathedrals in England and Wales

    This study employs Jungian psychological type theory to profile visitors to Chester Cathedral in England and St Davids Cathedral in Wales. Psychological type theory offers a fourfold psychographic segmentation of visitors, distinguishing between introversion and extraversion, sensing and intuition, thinking and feeling, and judging and perceiving. New data provided by 157 visitors to Chester Cathedral (considered alongside previously published data provided by 381 visitors to St Davids Cathedral) demonstrated that these two cathedrals attract more introverts than extraverts, more sensers than intuitives, and more judgers than perceivers, but equal proportions of thinkers and feelers. Comparison with the population norms demonstrated that extraverts and perceivers are significantly under-represented among visitors to these two cathedrals. The implications of these findings are discussed both for maximising the visitor experiences of those already attracted to these cathedrals and for discovering ways of attracting more extraverts and more perceivers to explore these cathedrals

    Distinctive Personality Traits and Neural Correlates Associated with Stimulant Drug Use Versus Familial Risk of Stimulant Dependence

    BackgroundStimulant drugs such as cocaine and amphetamine have a high abuse liability, but not everyone who uses them develops dependence. However, the risk for dependence is increased for individuals with a family history of addiction. We hypothesized that individuals without a family history of dependence who have been using cocaine recreationally for several years but have not made the transition to dependence will differ in terms of personality traits and brain structure from individuals who are either dependent on stimulants or at risk for dependence.MethodsWe compared 27 individuals without a familial risk of dependence who had been using cocaine recreationally with 50 adults with stimulant dependence, their nondependent siblings (n = 50), and unrelated healthy volunteers (n = 52) who had neither a personal nor a family history of dependence. All participants underwent a magnetic resonance imaging brain scan and completed a selection of personality measures that have been associated with substance abuse.ResultsIncreased sensation-seeking traits and abnormal orbitofrontal and parahippocampal volume were shared by individuals who were dependent on stimulant drugs or used cocaine recreationally. By contrast, increased levels of impulsive and compulsive personality traits and limbic-striatal enlargement were shared by stimulant-dependent individuals and their unaffected siblings.ConclusionsWe provide evidence for distinct neurobiological phenotypes that are either associated with familial vulnerability for dependence or with regular stimulant drug use. Our findings further suggest that some individuals with high sensation-seeking traits but no familial vulnerability for dependence are likely to use cocaine but may have relatively low risk for developing dependence

    Comparing non‐tidal ocean loading around the southern North Sea with subdaily GPS/GLONASS data

    Observing subdaily surface deformations is important to the interpretation of rapidly developing transient events. However, it is not known whether GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is able to identify millimeter‐level transient displacements over various subdaily timescales. We studied non‐tidal ocean loading (NTOL) using 18 GNSS stations along the southern North Sea for November–December 2013, and compared 3‐hourly GPS/GLONASS displacements with NTOL predictions. It was found that they overall agreed well with a mean correlation coefficient of 0.6 and their vertical differences had an RMS of 5.7 mm, but a 10‐mm subsidence prediction for December 5th could only be marginally detected. Hence the spatial coherence among the loading signatures at the 18 stations was harnessed to improve subdaily GNSS, and then the predicted displacements of 5–10‐mm over the subdaily timescales could be discriminated successfully. We envision that adding Galileo/BeiDou signals to GPS/GLONASS can further improve the resolution of subdaily GNSS, which can also enhance the spatial coherence of transient signals captured by regional GNSS stations

    Error analysis of continuous GPS position time series

    A total of 954 continuous GPS position time series from 414 individual sites in nine different GPS solutions were analyzed for noise content using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). The lengths of the series varied from around 16 months to over 10 years. MLE was used to analyze the data in two ways. In the first analysis the noise was assumed to be white noise only, a combination of white noise plus flicker noise, or a combination of white noise plus random walk noise. For the second analysis the spectral index and amplitude of the power law noise were estimated simultaneously with the white noise. In solutions where the sites were globally distributed, the noise can be best described by a combination of white noise plus flicker noise. Both noise components show latitude dependence in their amplitudes (higher at equatorial sites) together with a bias to larger values in the Southern Hemisphere. In the regional solutions, where a spatially correlated (common mode) signal has been removed, the noise is significantly lower. The spectral index of the power law in regional solutions is more varied than in the global solutions and probably reflects a mixture of local effects. A significant reduction in noise can be seen since the first continuous GPS networks began recording in the early 1990s. A comparison of the noise amplitudes to the different monument types in the Southern California Integrated GPS Network suggests that the deep drill braced monument is preferred for maximum stability

    Zeros of the i.i.d. Gaussian power series: a conformally invariant determinantal process

    Consider the zero set of the random power series f(z)=sum a_n z^n with i.i.d. complex Gaussian coefficients a_n. We show that these zeros form a determinantal process: more precisely, their joint intensity can be written as a minor of the Bergman kernel. We show that the number of zeros of f in a disk of radius r about the origin has the same distribution as the sum of independent {0,1}-valued random variables X_k, where P(X_k=1)=r^{2k}. Moreover, the set of absolute values of the zeros of f has the same distribution as the set {U_k^{1/2k}} where the U_k are i.i.d. random variables uniform in [0,1]. The repulsion between zeros can be studied via a dynamic version where the coefficients perform Brownian motion; we show that this dynamics is conformally invariant.Comment: 37 pages, 2 figures, updated proof

    Still policing the crisis?

    Writing this has been a troubling experience. Returning to a text 30 years on in this way combines intellectual, political and personal reflections in an unsettling way. These range from a powerful attachment to processes of collective or collaborative intellectual work that Policing the Crisis (PTC; Hall et al., 1978) embodied and enhanced to a rather depressed sense of how many things the book got right about the trajectory of the British social formation in the mid 1970s (other futures might have been preferable). And above all, there is a sense of what the book stands for in the emergence of cultural studies as an institutionalized academic field. As a way of trying to digest these different responses, I have tried to address three sorts of questions: why PTC mattered, where it belongs and why it continues to have echoes in the present
