Help-Seeking and Entrepreneurial Processes: Three Essays on Help-Seeking in the Context of Entrepreneurship

    Get PDF
Entrepreneurship researchers are consistently interested in identifying the mechanisms involved in the success and growth of new ventures. In this dissertation, I examine the antecedents and consequences of help-seeking behaviors by entrepreneurs. Specifically, I examine antecedents to entrepreneurial help-seeking that influence their choices, and then how help-seeking behaviors impact entrepreneurs and their ventures. In Essay 1, I develop the foundation for why help-seeking is an important process to study in entrepreneurship, discuss how entrepreneurship differs from the traditional organizational context, and then extrapolate how entrepreneurship provides a unique lens through which to examine this behavior. In Essay 2, I draw on human capital theory to explore how the prior industry experience of entrepreneurs affects their help-seeking behaviors. Using a sample of U.S. entrepreneurs, I investigate how the difficulty and frequency of problems, as well as industry differences, have an effect on how and when the entrepreneur seeks help. In Essay 3, I unpack how help-seeking behavior may modify the overall outcomes of the venture by specifically looking at how social and economic exchanges increase entrepreneurial work tension and affect firm performance leading to closure intentions. I empirically test how these two types of exchanges create different expectations that induce tension and have different consequences in terms of firm performance and the longevity of the venture.Together these three essays examine the process of help-seeking in entrepreneurship. In combination, this dissertation integrates and tests theory regarding the antecedents and consequences of entrepreneurial help-seeking, shedding new light into this important process

Six month, open-trial of bupropion SR in comparison to methylphenidate in the treatment of adults with ADHD

posterABSTRACT Objective: ADHD has become increasingly diagnosed and treated in adults. Treatment modalities have grown to include several antidepressants as well as stimulant medications. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of bupropion SR compared to methylphenidate in an extended open-label study following a previously reported six-week, double-blind placebo-controlled trial of bupropion SR (1). Methods: Sixty subjects were selected using the Utah Criteria and DSM-IV for ADHD. Sixty percent were assigned to bupropion SR and 40% to placebo in a double-blind manner. Nonresponders to bupropion (n=22) were treated with methylphenidate in an open manner. Patients treated with placebo were treated with bupropion SR. Results: Response rate to bupropion SR in patients (n=38) treated in either the double-blind study or the open study was 43% as defined by a 40% improvement in the Wender Reimherr Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Scale (WRAADDS). In nonresponders subsequently treated with methylphenidate (n=16) the response measured in the same manner was 63% (p<ns). Conversely, in patients who continued in treatment for an extended 4-6 month time period, WRAADDS scores improved 65% over baseline with bupropion SR (n=10) and 59% with methylphenidate (n=8) Discussion: We found a lower frequency of response in adult ADHD with bupropion SR as opposed to methylphenidate. However, treatment with either medication produced equivalent levels of improvement at the 4 to 6 month evaluation in the subpopulation continuing on medication. Despite the increasing recognition of adult ADHD, there is a paucity of data on its treatment. Information on long-term outcome in adults is even more limited. Although the stimulants have been shown to be effective in adult ADHD, the multiple dosing, scheduled prescribing restrictions, anxiogenic properties, and abuse potential limit their usefulness in subgroups of adults. Despite the emergence of bupropion as a second-line agent for pediatric ADHD, data in ADHD adults are limited. There is a perception that stimulants produce a greater degree of improvement in the symptoms of ADHD than non-stimulants such as bupropion. We now report findings on an open-label, extended study of bupropion SR in comparison with methylphenidate

Assessment of personality disorder in adult ADHD using data from a clinical trial of OROS Methylphenidate (OROS MPH)

posterBackground: Studies have reported high comorbidity of personality disorder and adult ADHD. However, assessment of personality disorder is problematic and none have rigorously confirmed this observation with measures of concurrent validity. Methods: 47 patients entered a double-blind trial of OROS MPH after administration of the Wisconsin Personality Inventory (WISPI-IV) and the SCID-II. At discharge, all information was reviewed to produce a final consensus personality diagnosis. Patients were separated into three post hoc categories: PDnegative (no personality disorder), PDpositive (subjects meeting diagnostic criteria for one disorder), and PDplus (subjects meeting diagnostic criteria for ?2 disorders). Results: 45% of subjects had a personality disorder on the final assessment versus 62% (SCID-II) and 33% (WISPI-IV): 11% cluster A, 17% cluster B and 30% cluster C. Compared to the final assessment, the WISPI-IV identified PDnegative subjects with sensitivity = .92 and specificity = .67 and PDplus subjects with sensitivity = .40 and specificity = 1.00. The SCID-II identified PDnegative subjects with sensitivity = .64 and specificity = .90 and PDplus subjects with sensitivity = .90 and specificity = .84. There was a significant correlation between the number of SCID-II items endorsed by each subject and their WISPI-IV average z-score (r=.67, df=46, p<.001). Conclusions: All three systems detected personality disorder in a large proportion of patients. The WISPI tended to under-estimate personality disorders while the SCID-II over-estimated them. The self-administered WISPI-IV would be more practical in a multicenter clinical trial to provide an estimate of personality disorder. Light therapy has been demonstrated useful in treating SAD.  The seminal article by Rosenthal et al (1984) hypothesized about the depressogenic effects of melatonin and described preliminary findings about the effects of artificial light therapy.  Since that time, research has supported this observation and expanded to conditions other than SAD such as problems with jet-lag and shift work. A particular area of interest is the relationship between SAD and other affective disorders.  It is probable that even within SAD studies, subjects do not all suffer from pure SAD, but most studies do not indicate the degree of overlap in their samples.  For example, patients with major depressive disorder often have seasonal variations with winter being the season with the greatest risk for depression (Kasper et al 1990). Photosensitive retinal ganglion cells that project from the retina to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, intergeniculate leaflet and olivary pretectal nucleus (Gooley et al 2003) are probably responsible for the melatonin suppression associated with light therapy.  It appears that these cells respond most strongly to wavelengths of ~480nm.  This understanding has led to the development of blue light therapy for SAD. While blue light treatment of SAD has proven effective in prior trials, the present study was an improvement in three ways:  1)  The use of bright red light as placebo rather than the commonly used dim red light.  2) The impact of incomplete summer remission on treatment outcome was assessed.  3) An open-label, follow-up period was included

Perceived Levels of Teaching Self-Efficacy Among Advanced CES Doctoral Students Engaging in External Pedagogical Experiences

This quantitative study examined factors of internal preparation practices (i.e., coursework in college teaching, fieldwork in college teaching, and frequency of supervision) and external pedagogical experiences (i.e., holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree in teaching and adjunct faculty experiences in higher education) and their potential effects on teaching self-efficacy among counselor education and supervision doctoral students. This study identified both significant and non-significant relationships between the stated variables. Contrary to previous research (Suddeath et al., 2020), internal preparation practices did not significantly predict scores of teaching self-efficacy among this population. However, the findings suggest that participants holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree in teaching may experience a significant variation in teaching self-efficacy scores as compared to those without these educational experiences. Finally, adjunct faculty experiences in higher education were not found significant in predicting teaching self-efficacy but the model displayed a meaningful effect size which may call for further research. A subsequent exploratory factor analysis on the instrument used within this study (the Self-Efficacy Toward Teaching Inventory; Tollerud, 1990) revealed a 31-item, five-factor model explaining 69.9% of the variance. Implications for the field of counselor education and the practice of pedagogy are provided, as well as limitations of the current study and potential directions for future research

    Flags, Tags, and Custom Queues

Clemson Libraries have been using ILLiad for more than a decade. Upon recently hosting representatives from OCLC for eventual Tipasa migration, we learned that we currently use flags the way we will need to use tags in the future. As Tipasa will not offer an option for custom queues, which are a major part of our workflow, we will need to adapt tags for use in place of custom queues. This poster will outline our current plan for transforming our workflows after migration
