Direct Laser Sintering of Metals
The use of a directed laser bealn source to selectively sinter multiple layers of
binderless metal powder for the purposes of rapid prototyping is described. The
work in this paper is restricted to -325 mesh iron powder, which was sintered
using a C\V 50 W Nd:YAG laser to approximately 3.5% density. A subsequent
post-treatlnent was perfornled to achieve a fully dense saulple. It is envisioned
that such a system can be used to manufacture functional metallic prototypes

A Cup Product in the Galois Cohomology of Number Fields
Let K be a number field containing the group of n-th roots of unity and S a
set of primes of K including all those dividing n and all real archimedean
places. We consider the cup product on the first Galois cohomology group of the
maximal S-ramified extension of K with coefficients in n-th roots of unity,
which yields a pairing on a subgroup of the multiplicative group of K
containing the S-units. In this general situation, we determine a formula for
the cup product of two elements which pair trivially at all local places.
Our primary focus is the case that K is the cyclotomic field of p-th roots of
unity for n = p an odd prime and S consists of the unique prime above p in K.
We describe a formula for this cup product in the case that one element is a
p-th root of unity. We explain a conjectural calculation of the restriction of
the cup product to p-units for all p < 10,000 and conjecture its surjectivity
for all p satisfying Vandiver's conjecture. We prove this for the smallest
irregular prime p = 37, via a computation related to the Galois module
structure of p-units in the unramified extension of K of degree p.
We describe a number of applications: to a product map in K-theory, to the
structure of S-class groups in Kummer extensions of K, to relations in the
Galois group of the maximal pro-p extension of K unramified outside p, to
relations in the graded Z_p-Lie algebra associated to the representation of the
absolute Galois group of Q in the outer automorphism group of the pro-p
fundamental group of P^1 minus three points, and to Greenberg's pseudo-nullity

Shockwaves in converging geometries
Plate impact experiments are a powerful tool in equation of state (EOS) development, but are inherently limited by the range of impact velocities accessible to the gun. In an effort to dramatically increase the range of pressures which can be studied with available impact velocities, a new experimental technique is being developed. The possibility of using a confined converging target to focus Shockwaves and produce a large amplitude pressure pulse is examined. When the planar shock resulting from impact enters the converging target the impedance mismatch at the boundary of the confinement produces reflected Mach waves and the subsequent wave interactions produce a diffraction cycle resulting in increases in the shock strength with each cycle. Since this configuration is limited to relatively low impedance targets, a second technique is proposed in which the target is two concentric cylinders designed such that the inner cylinder will have a lower shock velocity than the much larger shock velocity in the outer cylinder. The resulting dispersion in the wave front creates converging shocks, which will interact and eventually result in a steady Mach configuration with an increase in pressure in the Mach disk. Numerical simulations indicate a significant increase in pressure for both methods and show promise for the proposed concepts
Temporal and spatial distribution of stratospheric trace gases over Antarctica in August and September, 1987
There have been a large number of suggestions made concerning the origin of the Antarctic 'ozone hole' since its discovery; these changes include stratospheric chemistry, or changes in the solar input, or combinations of these effects. Supporting or refuting these theories requires a wide variety of data for comparison with the predictions. In Aug. and Sept., 1987, a field observation expedition was made over Antarctica from a base in Punta Arenas, Chile. Two aircraft, an ER-2 with in-situ instruments flew at altitudes up to 18 km measuring ozone, water, ClO, BrO, NO sub x, particles, and meteorological parameters in the ozone layer. A DC-8 flew at altitudes of 10 to 12 km, below the ozone layer, using remote sensing instruments for measuring composition and aerosol content of the ozone layer, as well as in-situ instruments for measuring composition at aircraft altitudes. The obsevation of a number of chemical species and their correlation with each other and with meteorological parameters gives a useful set of data for comparison with various theories
Multiple differences in calling songs and other traits between solitary and gregarious Mormon crickets from allopatric mtDNA clades

Brown provided assistance with digital imaging and morphological measurements.Background: In acoustic species, traits such as male calling song are likely to diverge quickly between allopatric populations due to sexual selection, and divergence in parameters such as carrier frequency, chirp structure, and other important song characters can influence sexual isolation. Here we make use of two forms of Mormon crickets to examine differences in a broad suite of traits that have the potential to influence speciation via sexual isolation. Mormon crickets in "gregarious" populations aggregate into dense migratory bands, and females are the sexually competitive Fsex ( sex- role reversal). There is also a non-outbreak "solitary" form. These two forms are largely but not perfectly correlated with a significant mtDNA subdivision within the species that is thought to have arisen in allopatry. Combined information about multiple, independently evolving traits, such as morphology and structural and behavioural differences in calling song, provides greater resolution of the overall differences between these allopatric populations, and allows us to assess their stage of divergence. We test two predictions, first that the forms differ in song and second that gregarious males are more reluctant to sing than solitary males due to sex role reversal. We also tested for a difference in the relationship between the size of the forewing resonator, the mirror, and carrier frequency, as most models of sound production in crickets indicate that mirror size should predict carrier frequency. Results: Multivariate analyses showed that solitary and gregarious individuals from different populations representing the two mtDNA clades had almost non-overlapping distributions based on multiple song and morphological measurements. Carrier frequency differed between the two, and gregarious males were more reluctant to sing overall. Mirror size predicted carrier frequency; however, the relationship between mirror size and surface area varied between solitary and gregarious forms, suggesting that factors above and beyond mirror size contribute to carrier frequency. Conclusion: The two clades of Mormon crickets differ in a broad suite of independent traits that probably justify subspecies status ( the two can successfully mate so may not be reproductively isolated). However, our results emphasize the importance of carefully distinguishing the ultimate causation of differences between traits used to delineate species or subspecies boundaries.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Infrared measurements of column amounts of stratospheric constituents in the Antarctic winter, 1987
The discovery of Farman et al. of recent large depletions of ozone in the Antarctic stratosphere in the austral spring has aroused great interest because of its serious potential consequences, as well as its surprising nature. An airborne expedition, including 21 experiments on two aircraft, was mounted for Punta Arenas, Chile, in August and September, 1987, to gather a wide range of data to understand the origins and implications of this phenomenon, known as the ozone hole. As a part of this expedition, a high resolution Fourier transform spectrometer was flown on the DC-8, measuring the column amount of a number of trace gases above the flight altitude. Column results are presented only from the flight of September 21; results from other flights are included in an accompanying paper. The deduced column for ozone HCl, and NO2 deduced from the spectra, plotted as a function of latitude are shown. It should be noted that there are many other factors varying as well as the latitude, but latitude seems to be the variable which most clearly provides a passage across the vortex boundary. It can be seen that south 76 degrees S., the column of ozone, HCl, and NO2, all decreas markedly, The ratio of HCl to Hf, normally about 5:1 in midlatitudes, approaches unity. Clearly the chemistry of chlorine and nitrogen are disturbed in the region of low ozone. While dynamical theories could perhaps explain a reduction of these three gases in the same region, since all are of stratospheric origin, it is difficult to see how any purely dynamical mechanism could produce the observed HCl:HF ratio, since the two gases have similar origins. A close look at other species to be reported as well as the correlation with other measurements, such as ClO supports the conclusion that the ozone depletion is a result of chemical processes which deplete HCl and NOx relative to the midlatitude situation
Experimental observation of the influence of furnace temperature profile on convection and segregation in the vertical Bridgman crystal growth technique
Azulene-doped naphthalene was directionally solidified during the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger technique. Doping homogeneity and convection were determined as a function of the temperature profile in the furnace and the freezing rate. Convection velocities were two orders of magnitude lower when the temperature increased with height. Rarely was the convection pattern axisymmetric, even though the temperature varied less than 0.1 K around the circumference of the growth ampoule. Correspondingly the cross sectional variation in azulene concentration tended to be asymmetric, especially when the temperature increased with height. This cross sectional variation changed dramatically along the ingot, reflecting changes in convection presumably due to the decreasing height of the melt. Although there was large scatter and irreproducibility in the cross sectional variation in doping, this variation tended to be least when the growth rate was low and the convection was vigorous. It is expected that compositional variations would also be small at high growth rates with weak convection and flat interfaces, although this was not investigated in the present experiments. Neither rotation of the ampoule nor deliberate introduction of thermal asymmetries during solidification had a significant influence on cross sectional variations in doping. It is predicted that slow directional solidification under microgravity conditions could produce greater inhomogeneities than on Earth. Combined use of microgravity and magnetic fields would be required to achieve homogeneity when it is necessary to freeze slowly in order to avoid constitutional supercooling
Method and apparatus for using magneto-acoustic remanence to determine embrittlement
A method and apparatus for testing steel components for temperature embrittlement uses magneto-acoustic emission to nondestructively evaluate the component are presented. Acoustic emission signals occur more frequently at higher levels in embrittled components. A pair of electromagnets are used to create magnetic induction in the test component. Magneto-acoustic emission signals may be generated by applying an AC current to the electromagnets. The acoustic emission signals are analyzed to provide a comparison between a component known to be unembrittled and a test component. Magnetic remanence is determined by applying a DC current to the electromagnets and then by turning the magnets off and observing the residual magnetic induction
