Robustness of the O() universality class
We calculate the critical exponents for Lorentz-violating O()
scalar field theories by using two independent methods. In
the first situation we renormalize a massless theory by utilizing normalization
conditions. An identical task is fulfilled in the second case in a massive
version of the same theory, previously renormalized in the BPHZ method in four
dimensions. We show that although the renormalization constants, the
and anomalous dimensions acquire Lorentz-violating quantum corrections, the
outcome for the critical exponents in both methods are identical and
furthermore they are equal to their Lorentz-invariant counterparts. Finally we
generalize the last two results for all loop levels and we provide symmetry
arguments for justifying the latter
Resource allocation, hyperphagia and compensatory growth
Organisms often shown enhanced growth during recovery from starvation, and can even overtake continuously fed conspecifics (overcompensation). In an earlier paper (Ecology 84, 2777-2787), we studied the relative role played by hyperphagia and resource allocation in producing overcompensation in juvenile (non-reproductive) animals. We found that, although hyperphagia always produces growth compensation, overcompensation additionally requires protein allocation control which routes assimilate preferentially to structure during recovery. In this paper we extend our model to cover reproductively active individuals and demonstrate that growth rate overcompensation requires a similar combination of hyperphagia and allocation control which routes the part of enhanced assimilation not used for reproduction preferentially towards structural growth. We compare the properties of our dynamic energy budget model with an earlier proposal, due to Kooijman, which we extend to include hyperphagia. This formulation assumes that the rate of allocation to reserves is controlled by instantaneous feeding rate, and one would thus expect that an extension to include hyperphagia would not predict growth overcompensation. However, we show that a self-consistent representation of the hyperphagic response in Kooijman's model overrides its fundamental dynamics, leading to preferential allocation to structural growth during recovery and hence to growth overcompensation
Finite Form of the Quintuple Product Identity
The celebrated quintuple product identity follows surprisingly from an
almost-trivial algebraic identity, which is the limiting case of the
terminating q-Dixon formula.Comment: 1 pag
In-flight simulation investigation of rotorcraft pitch-roll cross coupling
An in-flight simulation experiment investigating the handling qualities effects of the pitch-roll cross-coupling characteristic of single-main-rotor helicopters is described. The experiment was conducted using the NASA/Army CH-47B variable stability helicopter with an explicit-model-following control system. The research is an extension of an earlier ground-based investigation conducted on the NASA Ames Research Center's Vertical Motion Simulator. The model developed for the experiment is for an unaugmented helicopter with cross-coupling implemented using physical rotor parameters. The details of converting the model from the simulation to use in flight are described. A frequency-domain comparison of the model and actual aircraft responses showing the fidelity of the in-flight simulation is described. The evaluation task was representative of nap-of-the-Earth maneuvering flight. The results indicate that task demands are important in determining allowable levels of coupling. In addition, on-axis damping characteristics influence the frequency-dependent characteristics of coupling and affect the handling qualities. Pilot technique, in terms of learned control crossfeeds, can improve performance and lower workload for particular types of coupling. The results obtained in flight corroborated the simulation results
The geography of entrepreneurship in the New York metropolitan area
This article was presented at a conference organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in April 2005, "Urban Dynamics in New York City." The goal of the conference was threefold: to examine the historical transformations of the engine-of-growth industries in New York and distill the main determinants of the city's historical dominance as well as the challenges to its continued success; to study the nature and evolution of immigration flows into New York; and to analyze recent trends in a range of socioeconomic outcomes, both for the general population and recent immigrants more specifically.Business enterprises - New York (N.Y.) ; Economic conditions - New York (N.Y.) ; Federal Reserve District, 2nd ; Urban economics
Arithmetic Properties of Overpartition Pairs
Bringmann and Lovejoy introduced a rank for overpartition pairs and
investigated its role in congruence properties of , the number of
overpartition pairs of n. In particular, they applied the theory of Klein forms
to show that there exist many Ramanujan-type congruences for the number
. In this paper, we shall derive two Ramanujan-type identities and
some explicit congruences for . Moreover, we find three ranks as
combinatorial interpretations of the fact that is divisible by
three for any n. We also construct infinite families of congruences for
modulo 3, 5, and 9.Comment: 19 page
