    Structures of K0.05Na0.95NbO3 (50–300 K) and K0.30Na0.70NbO3 (100–200 K)

    Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data is reported for the potential lead-free piezoelectric material KxNa1 - xNbO3 (x = 0.05, x = 0.3) at low temperatures. The structures were determined to be of rhombohedral symmetry, space group R3c, with the tilt system a-a-a- for both compositions. It was found that some of the structural parameters differ significantly in the two structures, and particularly the NbO6 octahedral strains as a function of temperature. The 300 K profile for K0.05Na0.95NbO3 shows the coexistence of rhombohedral and monoclinic phases, which indicates that the phase boundary is close to room temperature; the phase boundary for K0.30Na0.70NbO3 is found to be at approximately 180 K

    Unsupervised Bias Detection in College Student Newspapers

    This paper presents a pipeline with minimal human influence for scraping and detecting bias on college newspaper archives. This paper introduces a framework for scraping complex archive sites that automated tools fail to grab data from, and subsequently generates a dataset of 14 student papers with 23,154 entries. This data can also then be queried by keyword to calculate bias by comparing the sentiment of a large language model summary to the original article. The advantages of this approach are that it is less comparative than reconstruction bias and requires less labelled data than generating keyword sentiment. Results are calculated on politically charged words as well as control words to show how conclusions can be drawn. The complete method facilitates the extraction of nuanced insights with minimal assumptions and categorizations, paving the way for a more objective understanding of bias within student newspaper sources.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, submitted to AAAI202

    Partial anomalous pulmonary venous return mimics arterial positioning after central line placement for plasmapheresis

    Case: A 61-year-old male who was status post right single lung transplant complicated by grade three primary graft dysfunction was admitted and mechanically ventilated for hypoxic respiratory failure. Donor specific antibody testing to human leukocyte antigens was positive. The protocol for antibody-mediated transplant rejection was initiated. One aspect of the protocol was a series of plasmapheresis procedures. In advance of the first plasmapheresis, central line placement was attempted via the left internal jugular vein. A chest x-ray showed a line that terminated to the left of the midline and raised concern for arterial placement (Figure 1).     DPAGT1 Inhibitors of Capuramycin Analogues and Their Antimigratory Activities of Solid Tumors

    Capuramycin displays a narrow spectrum of antibacterial activity by targeting bacterial translocase I (MraY). In our program of development of new N-acetylglucosaminephosphotransferase1 (DPAGT1) inhibitors, we have identified that a capuramycin phenoxypiperidinylbenzylamide analogue (CPPB) inhibits DPAGT1 enzyme with an IC₅₀ value of 200 nM. Despite a strong DPAGT1 inhibitory activity, CPPB does not show cytotoxicity against normal cells and a series of cancer cell lines. However, CPPB inhibits migrations of several solid cancers including pancreatic cancers that require high DPAGT1 expression in order for tumor progression. DPAGT1 inhibition by CPPB leads to a reduced expression level of Snail but does not reduce E-cadherin expression level at the IC₅₀ (DPAGT1) concentration. CPPB displays a strong synergistic effect with paclitaxel against growth-inhibitory action of a patient-derived pancreatic adenocarcinoma, PD002: paclitaxel (IC₅₀: 1.25 μM) inhibits growth of PD002 at 0.0024–0.16 μM in combination with 0.10–2.0 μM CPPB (IC₅₀: 35 μM)

    Integrative Discovery of Epigenetically Derepressed Cancer Testis Antigens in NSCLC

    Background: Cancer/testis antigens (CTAs) were first discovered as immunogenic targets normally expressed in germline cells, but differentially expressed in a variety of human cancers. In this study, we used an integrative epigenetic screening approach to identify coordinately expressed genes in human non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose transcription is driven by promoter demethylation. Methodology/Principal Findings: Our screening approach found 290 significant genes from the over 47,000 transcripts incorporated in the Affymetrix Human Genome U133 Plus 2.0 expression array. Of the top 55 candidates, 10 showed both differential overexpression and promoter region hypomethylation in NSCLC. Surprisingly, 6 of the 10 genes discovered by this approach were CTAs. Using a separate cohort of primary tumor and normal tissue, we validated NSCLC promoter hypomethylation and increased expression by quantitative RT-PCR for all 10 genes. We noted significant, coordinated coexpression of multiple target genes, as well as coordinated promoter demethylation, in a large set of individual tumors that was associated with the SCC subtype of NSCLC. In addition, we identified 2 novel target genes that exhibited growth- promoting effects in multiple cell lines. Conclusions/Significance: Coordinated promoter demethylation in NSCLC is associated with aberrant expression of CTAs and potential, novel candidate protooncogenes that can be identified using integrative discovery techniques. These findings have significant implications for discovery of novel CTAs and CT antigen directed immunotherapy. © 2009 Glazer et al

    Evaluation of focal hepatic masses: a comparative study of MRI and CT

    We evaluated suspected hepatic lesions in 30 patients using both nongated spin-echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on a 0.35 T superconducting magnet and contrast-enhanced dynamic incremental computed tomography (CT). In the 27 patients with focal lesions, both modalities detected abnormalities in 26 patients. Liver lesions were equally well demonstrated using MRI and CT in 15 patients, better demonstrated by CT in 11 patients, and better demonstrated by MRI in 1 patient. Small lesions (<2 cm) were much better demonstrated using CT than MRI; this was significant when knowledge of the precise extent of disease was necessary for planning surgical therapy or for evaluating response to chemotherapy. Five patients had significant extrahepatic disease detected by CT; MRI identified extrahepatic abnormalities in only 2 of these 5 patients.     Ultrahigh Piezoelectric Strains in PbZr1−xTixO3 single crystals with controlled Ti content close to the tricritical point

    Intensive investigations of PbZr Ti O (PZT) materials with the ABO perovskite structure are connected with their extraordinary piezoelectric properties. Especially well known are PZT ceramics at the Morphotropic Phase Boundary (MPB), with x~0.48, whose applications are the most numerous among ferroelectrics. These piezoelectric properties are often obtained by doping with various ions at the B sites. Interestingly, we have found similar properties for undoped PZT single crystals with low Ti content, for which we have confirmed the existence of the tricritical point near x~0.06. For a PbZr Ti O crystal, we describe the ultrahigh strain, dielectric, optical and piezoelectric properties. We interpret the ultrahigh strain observed in the region of the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric transition as an inverse piezoelectric effect generated by the coexistence of domains of different symmetries. The complex domain coexistence was confirmed by determining optical indicatrix orientations in domains. The piezoelectric coefficient in this region reached an extremely high value of 5000 pm/V. We also verified that the properties of the PZT single crystals from the region near the tricritical point are incredibly susceptible to a slight deviation in the Ti content
