COMPARING END-USE VALUES FOR NORTH DAKOTA HARD RED SPRING WHEAT VARIETIES
Markets for agricultural products may be inefficient when signals do not adequately reflect product characteristics important to market participants. Although preferences can be explicitly stated through price premiums or characteristic values can be determined via hedonic methods, the problem is compounded when product quality information is costly to obtain. Bundling of quality traits by variety can serve to signal product quality. A procedure is developed in this paper to derive the value of different varieties in meeting buyer demands. STARLINK: IMPACTS ON THE U.S. CORN MARKET AND WORLD TRADE
StarLink disrupted the U.S. corn market during the marketing year of 2000/01 as a result of inadvertent commingling. The potential volume of marketed StarLink-commingled corn from the 2000 crop located in areas near wet and dry millers prior to October 1, 2000, is estimated at 124 million bushels. Price differentials between StarLink-free and StarLink-commingled corn existed during the early stage of the incident, but eroded quickly. While StarLink has had a negative impact on U.S. corn exports, most of the reduction in exports to Japan and South Korea during November 2000 and March 2002 is due to Japan's increased purchases from South Africa, China's decision to continue to subsidize exports, increased competition from the large back-to-back crops in Argentina, and a record Brazilian crop.Crop Production/Industries, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,
Optical transmission through a polarization preserving single mode optical fiber at two Ar(+) laser wavelengths
The transmission characteristics of two Ar(+) laser wavelengths through a twenty meter Panda type Polarization Preserving Single Mode Optical Fiber (PPSMOF) were measured. The measurements were done with both single and multi-longitudinal mode radiation. In the single longitudinal mode case, a degrading Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) is observed as a backward scattering loss. By choosing an optimum coupling system and manipulating the input polarization, the threshold of the SBS onset can be raised and the transmission efficiency can be increased
Andreev's Theorem on hyperbolic polyhedra
In 1970, E. M. Andreev published a classification of all three-dimensional
compact hyperbolic polyhedra having non-obtuse dihedral angles. Given a
combinatorial description of a polyhedron, , Andreev's Theorem provides five
classes of linear inequalities, depending on , for the dihedral angles,
which are necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a hyperbolic
polyhedron realizing with the assigned dihedral angles. Andreev's Theorem
also shows that the resulting polyhedron is unique, up to hyperbolic isometry.
Andreev's Theorem is both an interesting statement about the geometry of
hyperbolic 3-dimensional space, as well as a fundamental tool used in the proof
for Thurston's Hyperbolization Theorem for 3-dimensional Haken manifolds. It is
also remarkable to what level the proof of Andreev's Theorem resembles (in a
simpler way) the proof of Thurston.
We correct a fundamental error in Andreev's proof of existence and also
provide a readable new proof of the other parts of the proof of Andreev's

A short, 4-step route to the scaffold of frondosin A and B is reported. The [1-methoxycarbonyl-5-(2′,5′-dimethoxyphenyl)pentadienyl]Fe(CO)3+ cation was prepared in two steps from (methyl 6-oxo-2,4-hexadienoate)Fe(CO)3. Reaction of this cation with isopropenyl Grignard or cyclohexenyllithium reagents affords (2-alkenyl-5-aryl-1-methoxycarbonyl-3-pentene-1,5-diyl)Fe(CO)3 along with other addition products. Oxidative decomplexation of these (pentenediyl)iron complexes, utilizing CuCl2, affords 6-aryl-3-methoxycarbonyl-1,4-cycloheptadienes via the presumed intermediacy of a cis-divinylcyclopropane
