A cross-sectional study of predatory publishing emails received by career development grant awardees
OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the scope of academic spam emails (ASEs) among career development grant awardees and the factors associated with the amount of time spent addressing them.
DESIGN:
A cross-sectional survey of career development grant investigators via an anonymous online survey was conducted. In addition to demographic and professional information, we asked investigators to report the number of ASEs received each day, how they determined whether these emails were spam and time they spent per day addressing them. We used bivariate analysis to assess factors associated with the amount of time spent on ASEs.
SETTING:
An online survey sent via email on three separate occasions between November and December 2016.
PARTICIPANTS:
All National Institutes of Health career development awardees funded in the 2015 fiscal year.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:
Factors associated with the amount of time spent addressing ASEs.
RESULTS:
A total of 3492 surveys were emailed, of which 206 (5.9%) were returned as undeliverable and 96 (2.7%) reported an out-of-office message; our overall response rate was 22.3% (n=733). All respondents reported receiving ASEs, with the majority (54.4%) receiving between 1 and 10 per day and spending between 1 and 10 min each day evaluating them. The amount of time respondents reported spending on ASEs was associated with the number of peer-reviewed journal articles authored (p<0.001), a history of publishing in open access format (p<0.01), the total number of ASEs received (p<0.001) and a feeling of having missed opportunities due to ignoring these emails (p=0.04).
CONCLUSIONS:
ASEs are a common distraction for career development grantees that may impact faculty productivity. There is an urgent need to mitigate this growing problem
Cep70 and Cep131 contribute to ciliogenesis in zebrafish embryos.
BACKGROUND: The centrosome is the cell's microtubule organising centre, an organelle with important roles in cell division, migration and polarity. However, cells can divide and flies can, for a large part of development, develop without them. Many centrosome proteins have been identified but the roles of most are still poorly understood. The centrioles of the centrosome are similar to the basal bodies of cilia, hair-like extensions of many cells that have important roles in cell signalling and development. In a number of human diseases, such Bardet-Biedl syndrome, centrosome/cilium proteins are mutated, leading to polycystic kidney disease, situs inversus, and neurological problems, amongst other symptoms. RESULTS: We describe zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos depleted for two uncharacterised, centrosome proteins, Cep70 and Cep131. The phenotype of these embryos resembles that of zebrafish mutants for intraflagellar transport proteins (IFTs), with kidney and ear development affected and left-right asymmetry randomised. These organs and processes are those affected in Bardet-Biedl syndrome and other similar diseases. Like these diseases, the root cause of the phenotype lies, in fact, in dysfunctional cilia, which are shortened but not eliminated in several tissues in the morphants. Centrosomes and basal bodies, on the other hand, are present. Both Cep70 and Cep131 possess a putative HDAC (histone deacetylase) interacting domain. However, we could not detect in yeast two-hybrid assays any interaction with the deacetylase that controls cilium length, HDAC6, or any of the IFTs that we tested. CONCLUSION: Cep70 and Cep131 contribute to ciliogenesis in many tissues in the zebrafish embryo: cilia are made in cep70 and cep131 morphant zebrafish embryos but are shortened. We propose that the role of these centrosomal/basal body proteins is in making the cilium and that they are involved in determination of the length of the axoneme.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. Serum, urinary, and salivary nitric oxide in rheumatoid arthritis: complexities of interpreting nitric oxide measures
Nitric oxide (NO) may play important roles in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA is an inflammatory disease involving joints and other systems including salivary glands. To assess NO production in RA patients, we compared levels of serum, urine, and salivary nitrite and nitrate (NOx) in patients with RA and normal subjects, and we examined the relationships of these measures to disease activity. Serum, urine, and NOx levels as well as renal creatinine, NOx clearance and fractional excretion rates were compared in 25 RA patients and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Subjects were hospitalized for 3 days and placed on a NOxrestricted diet. NOx was assayed using nitrate reductase and the Griess reagent. RA activity was assessed using standard clinical and laboratory measures. While consuming a restricted diet for 3 days to eliminate the effects of oral intake of NOx, 24 hour urinary NOx excretion decreased in both RA patients and healthy controls. Urine NOx levels at all time points were not significantly different between RA patients and normal subjects. Serum NOx levels also decreased during the 3 days of NOx restriction, but RA patients had higher serum NOx levels at all time points compared with the control group. Likewise, serum NOx/creatinine ratios were higher in RA patients than in controls. Although basal salivary flow rate and tear flow were lower in RA patients, salivary NOx levels did not differ between normal and RA subjects. While renal creatinine clearance was not different between the two groups, we found that RA patients had lower renal NOx clearance and lower renal NOx fractional excretion. After correction of p values for multiple comparisons, there were no significant relationships for the RA group between measures of disease activity and the urinary NOx, serum NOx, or urinary NOx clearance. Despite interest in the use of NO as a marker of disease activity, alterations in renal NOx clearance and fractional excretion in RA make it difficult to assess in vivo NO production even with strict dietary restriction of NOx intake
Theory of Parabolic Arcs in Interstellar Scintillation Spectra
Our theory relates the secondary spectrum, the 2D power spectrum of the radio
dynamic spectrum, to the scattered pulsar image in a thin scattering screen
geometry. Recently discovered parabolic arcs in secondary spectra are generic
features for media that scatter radiation at angles much larger than the rms
scattering angle. Each point in the secondary spectrum maps particular values
of differential arrival-time delay and fringe rate (or differential Doppler
frequency) between pairs of components in the scattered image. Arcs correspond
to a parabolic relation between these quantities through their common
dependence on the angle of arrival of scattered components. Arcs appear even
without consideration of the dispersive nature of the plasma. Arcs are more
prominent in media with negligible inner scale and with shallow wavenumber
spectra, such as the Kolmogorov spectrum, and when the scattered image is
elongated along the velocity direction. The arc phenomenon can be used,
therefore, to constrain the inner scale and the anisotropy of scattering
irregularities for directions to nearby pulsars. Arcs are truncated by finite
source size and thus provide sub micro arc sec resolution for probing emission
regions in pulsars and compact active galactic nuclei. Multiple arcs sometimes
seen signify two or more discrete scattering screens along the propagation
path, and small arclets oriented oppositely to the main arc persisting for long
durations indicate the occurrence of long-term multiple images from the
scattering screen.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa
Studies of Brain Activity Correlates of Behavior in Individuals with and without Developmental Disabilities
There is a rich assortment of brain imaging methodologies that permits evaluation of the covert events that are necessary to complete a comprehensive account of behavior. Among the latter methodologies, our laboratories have begun to explore event-related potential (ERP) research to complement traditional behavior analysis

Polarization and orientation of retinal ganglion cells in vivo.
In the absence of external cues, neurons in vitro polarize by using intrinsic mechanisms. For example, cultured hippocampal neurons extend arbitrarily oriented neurites and then one of these, usually the one nearest the centrosome, begins to grow more quickly than the others. This neurite becomes the axon as it accumulates molecular components of the apical junctional complex. All the other neurites become dendrites. It is unclear, however, whether neurons in vivo, which differentiate within a polarized epithelium, break symmetry by using similar intrinsic mechanisms. To investigate this, we use four-dimensional microscopy of developing retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in live zebrafish embryos. We find that the situation is indeed very different in vivo, where axons emerge directly from uniformly polarized cells in the absence of other neurites. In vivo, moreover, components of the apical complex do not localize to the emerging axon, nor does the centrosome predict the site of axon emergence. Mosaic analysis in four dimensions, using mutants in which neuroepithelial polarity is disrupted, indicates that extrinsic factors such as access to the basal lamina are critical for normal axon emergence from RGCs in vivo.RIGHTS : This article is licensed under the BioMed Central licence at http://www.biomedcentral.com/about/license which is similar to the 'Creative Commons Attribution Licence'. Astrophysical Gyrokinetics: Basic Equations and Linear Theory
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence is encountered in a wide variety of
astrophysical plasmas, including accretion disks, the solar wind, and the
interstellar and intracluster medium. On small scales, this turbulence is often
expected to consist of highly anisotropic fluctuations with frequencies small
compared to the ion cyclotron frequency. For a number of applications, the
small scales are also collisionless, so a kinetic treatment of the turbulence
is necessary. We show that this anisotropic turbulence is well described by a
low frequency expansion of the kinetic theory called gyrokinetics. This paper
is the first in a series to examine turbulent astrophysical plasmas in the
gyrokinetic limit. We derive and explain the nonlinear gyrokinetic equations
and explore the linear properties of gyrokinetics as a prelude to nonlinear
simulations. The linear dispersion relation for gyrokinetics is obtained and
its solutions are compared to those of hot-plasma kinetic theory. These results
are used to validate the performance of the gyrokinetic simulation code {\tt
GS2} in the parameter regimes relevant for astrophysical plasmas. New results
on global energy conservation in gyrokinetics are also derived. We briefly
outline several of the problems to be addressed by future nonlinear
simulations, including particle heating by turbulence in hot accretion flows
and in the solar wind, the magnetic and electric field power spectra in the
solar wind, and the origin of small-scale density fluctuations in the
interstellar medium.Comment: emulateapj, 24 pages, 10 figures, revised submission to ApJ:
