    Manacled to Identity: Cosmopolitanism, Class, and ‘The Culture Concept’ in Stephen Crane

    This article begins with a close reading of Stephen Crane’s short story ‘Manacled’ from 1900, which situates this rarely considered short work within the context of contemporary debates about realism. I then proceed to argue that many of the debates raised by the tale have an afterlife in our own era of American literary studies, which has frequently focused on questions of ‘identity’ and ‘culture’ in its reading of realism and naturalism to the exclusion of the importance of cosmopolitan discourses of diffusion and exchange across national borders. I then offer a brief reading of Crane’s novel George’s Mother, which follows Walter Benn Michaels in suggesting that the recent critical attention paid to particularities of cultural difference in American studies have come to conflate ideas of class and social position with ideas of culture in ways that have ultimately obscured the presence of genuine historical inequalities in US society. In order to challenge this critical commonplace, I situate Crane’s work within a history of transatlantic cosmopolitanism associated with the ideas of Franz Boas and Matthew Arnold to demonstrate the ways in which Crane’s narratives sought out an experience of the universal within their treatments of the particular

Published in this context, Ernst Freund's little-known The Legal Nature of Corporations (1897) was an original attempt to come to terms with a new legal and economic reality. But it can also be described, to paraphrase Oliver Wendell Holmes, as the earliest example of the rational study of corporate law. The paper shows that Freund had the intuitions of an institutional economist, and engaged in what today would be called comparative institutional analysis. Remarkably, his argument that the corporate form secures property against insider defection and against outsiders anticipated recent work on entity shielding and capital lock-in, and can be read as an early contribution to what today would be called the theory of the firm.Peer reviewe

    Estimating HIV transmissions in a large U.S. clinic-based sample: effects of time and syndemic conditions

    Introduction: Little is known about onward HIV transmissions from people living with HIV (PLWH) in care. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has increased in potency, and treatment as prevention (TasP) is an important component of ending the epidemic. Syndemic theory has informed modelling of HIV risk but has yet to inform modelling of HIV transmissions. Methods: Data were from 61,198 primary HIV care visits for 14,261 PLWH receiving care through the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) at seven United States (U.S.) sites from 2007 to 2017. Patient-reported outcomes and measures (PROs) of syndemic conditions – depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, drug use (opiates, amphetamines, crack/cocaine) and alcohol use – were collected approximately four to six months apart along with sexual behaviours (mean = 4.3 observations). Counts of syndemic conditions, HIV sexual risk group and time in care were modelled to predict estimated HIV transmissions resulting from sexual behaviour and viral suppression status (HIV RNA \u3c 400/mL) using hierarchical linear modelling. Results: Patients averaged 0.38 estimated HIV transmissions/100 patients/year for all visits with syndemic conditions measured (down from 0.83, first visit). The final multivariate model showed that per 100 patients, each care visit predicted 0.05 fewer estimated transmissions annually (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.03 to 0.06; p \u3c 0.0005). Cisgender women, cisgender heterosexual men and cisgender men of undisclosed sexual orientation had, respectively, 0.47 (95% CI: 0.35 to 0.59; p \u3c 0.0005), 0.34 (95% CI: 0.20 to 0.49; p \u3c 0.0005) and 0.22 (95% CI: 0.09 to 0.35; p \u3c 0.005) fewer estimated HIV transmissions/100 patients/year than cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM). Each within-patient syndemic condition predicted 0.18 estimated transmissions/100 patients/year (95% CI: 0.12 to 0.24; p \u3c 0.0005). Each between-syndemic condition predicted 0.23 estimated HIV transmissions/100 patients/year (95% CI: 0.17 to 0.28; p \u3c 0.0005). Conclusions: Estimated HIV transmissions among PLWH receiving care in well-resourced U.S. clinical settings varied by HIV sexual risk group and decreased with time in care, highlighting the importance of TasP efforts. Syndemic conditions remained a significant predictor of estimated HIV transmissions notwithstanding the effects of HIV sexual risk group and time in care

    Exploring Halo Substructure with Giant Stars XI: The Tidal Tails of the Carina Dwarf Spheroidal and the Discovery of Magellanic Cloud Stars in the Carina Foreground

    A new large-area Washington M,T_2+DDO51 filter survey of more than 10 deg^2 around the Carina dSph galaxy reveals a spectroscopically confirmed power law radial density "break" population of Carina giant stars extending several degrees beyond the central King profile. Magellan telescope MIKE spectroscopy establishes the existence of Carina stars to at least 4.5 times its central King limiting radius, r_lim and primarily along Carina's major axis. To keep these stars bound to the dSph would require a global Carina mass-to-light ratio of M/L > 6,300 M/L_sun. The MIKE velocities, supplemented with ~950 additional Carina field velocities from archived VLT+GIRAFFE spectra with r<=r_lim, demonstrate a nearly constant Carina velocity dispersion to just beyond r = r_lim, and both a rising velocity dispersion and a velocity shear at still larger radii. Together, the observational evidence suggests that the discovered extended Carina population represents tidal debris from the dSph. Of 65 giant candidates at large angular radii from the Carina center for which MIKE spectra have been obtained 94% are associated either with Carina or a second, newly discovered diffuse, but strongly radial velocity-coherent (velocity dispersion of 9.8 km s^-1), foreground halo system. The fifteen stars in this second, retrograde velocity population have (1) a mean metallicity ~1 dex higher than that of Carina, and (2) colors and magnitudes consistent with the red clump of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Additional spectroscopy of giant star candidates in fields linking Carina and the LMC shows a smooth velocity gradient between the LMC and the retrograde Carina moving group.     Properties of Photogenerated Tryptophan and Tyrosyl Radicals in Structurally Characterized Proteins Containing Rhenium(I) Tricarbonyl Diimines

    Aromatic amino acid radicals are key intermediates in nucleic acid biosynthesis, DNA repair, dioxygen reduction by cytochrome oxidase, water oxidation by PSII, as well as other biological procesess. In our work on electron tunneling in proteins, we have developed laser flash/quench methods that potentially could facilitate the study of such highly reactive radicals. To test our methods, we are investigating two structurally characterized proteins, [Re(CO)_3(L)(H83)]^+AzM^(2+) and [Re(CO)_3(L)(H107)]^+AzM^(2+) (L ) 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 4,7-Me_2phen; Az ) Pseudomonas aeruginosa azurin; M ) Cu or Zn). Of special interest is that calculations and experiments on the H107 protein show that Cu^+ oxidation via electron transfer (ET) through an intervening tyrosine (Cu^+ → Y108^(./) → Re(2+)) is over 2 orders of magnitude faster than optimized (Cu^+ → Re^(2+)) electron tunneling

    Private Enforcement, Corruption, and Antitrust Design

    Recent adoption of competition laws across the globe has highlighted the importance of institutional considerations for antitrust effectiveness and the need for comparative institutional analyses of antitrust that extend beyond matters of substantive law. Contributing to the resulting nascent research agenda, we examine how the rationale for enabling versus precluding private antitrust enforcement as one salient choice in antitrust design depends on whether antitrust enforcement is corruption-free or plagued by corruption. Contingent on the nature of adjudicatory bias, bribery either discourages private antitrust lawsuits or incentivizes firms to engage in frivolous litigation. Corruption expectedly reduces the effectiveness of antitrust enforcement at deterring antitrust violations. Yet private antitrust enforcement as a complement to public enforcement can be social welfare-enhancing even in the presence of corruption. Under some circumstances, corruption actually increases the relative social desirability of private antitrust enforcement.
