    IT Governance For Systems Support And Maintenance ā€“ Views From CIOS In Multinational Enterprises

    This paper explores IS governance as it relates to systems support and maintenance (SS&M). We argue, that can be critically supportive of business operations, decision making, innovation and knowledge management strategies. Based on interviews with high level IS practitioners from large IT companies, we find that the value of SS&M as a potential link between the IT side and the business side of the organization, while recognized is still under-utilized. We enumerate and discuss a number of reasons for this situation from an IT governance perspective and call for a comprehensive research agenda to develop an integrated approach to link SS&M more closely

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Post-Starburst Signatures in Quasar Host Galaxies at z < 1

    Quasar host galaxies are key for understanding the relation between galaxies and the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at their centers. We present a study of 191 broad-line quasars and their host galaxies at z < 1, using high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) spectra produced by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project. Clear detection of stellar absorption lines allows a reliable decomposition of the observed spectra into nuclear and host components, using spectral models of quasar and stellar radiations as well as emission lines from the interstellar medium. We estimate age, mass (M*), and velocity dispersion (sigma*) of the host stars, the star formation rate (SFR), quasar luminosity, and SMBH mass (Mbh), for each object. The quasars are preferentially hosted by massive galaxies with M* ~ 10^{11} Msun characterized by stellar ages around a billion years, which coincides with the transition phase of normal galaxies from the blue cloud to the red sequence. The host galaxies have relatively low SFRs and fall below the main sequence of star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. These facts suggest that the hosts have experienced an episode of major star formation sometime in the past billion years, which was subsequently quenched or suppressed. The derived Mbh - sigma* and Mbh - M* relations agree with our past measurements and are consistent with no evolution from the local Universe. The present analysis demonstrates that reliable measurements of stellar properties of quasar host galaxies are possible with high-SNR fiber spectra, which will be acquired in large numbers with future powerful instruments such as the Subaru Prime Focus Spectrograph.Comment: ApJ in pres

    A Giant Loop of Ionized Gas Emerging from the Tumultuous Central Region of IC 5063

    The biconical radiation pattern extending from an active galactic nucleus (AGN) may strongly photoionize the circumnuclear interstellar medium (ISM) and stimulate emission from the narrow line region (NLR). Observations of the NLR may provide clues to the structure of dense material that preferentially obscures the bicone at certain angles, and may reveal the presence of processes in the ISM tied to AGN accretion and feedback. Ground-based integral field units (IFUs) may study these processes via well-understood forbidden diagnostic lines such as [O III] and [S II], but scales of āˆ¼10\sim10s of pc remain challenging to spatially resolve at these wavelengths for all but the nearest AGN. We present recent narrow filter Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of diagnostic forbidden ([O III], [S II]) and Balmer (HĪ±\alpha, HĪ²\beta) lines in the NLR of IC 5063. This AGN's jet inclination into the plane of the galaxy provides an important laboratory for strong AGN-host interactions. We find evidence for a low-ionization loop which emits brightly in [S II] and [N II], and which may arise from plume-like hot outflows that ablate ISM from the galactic plane before escaping laterally. We also present spatially resolved Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagnostic maps of the IC 5063 NLR. These maps suggest a sharp transition to lower-ionization states outside the jet path, and that such emission is dominated by āˆ¼10āˆ’40\sim10-40 pc clumps and filamentary structure at large (>>25{\deg}) angles from the bicone axis.     Transmission dynamics of the etiological agent of SARS in Hong Kong: impact of public health interventions.

    We present an analysis of the first 10 weeks of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in Hong Kong. The epidemic to date has been characterized by two large clusters-initiated by two separate "super-spread" events (SSEs)-and by ongoing community transmission. By fitting a stochastic model to data on 1512 cases, including these clusters, we show that the etiological agent of SARS is moderately transmissible. Excluding SSEs, we estimate that 2.7 secondary infections were generated per case on average at the start of the epidemic, with a substantial contribution from hospital transmission. Transmission rates fell during the epidemic, primarily as a result of reductions in population contact rates and improved hospital infection control, but also because of more rapid hospital attendance by symptomatic individuals. As a result, the epidemic is now in decline, although continued vigilance is necessary for this to be maintained. Restrictions on longer range population movement are shown to be a potentially useful additional control measure in some contexts. We estimate that most currently infected persons are now hospitalized, which highlights the importance of control of nosocomial transmission

    Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the fatigue scale-adolescent

Background: The availability of a valid and reliable instrument that accurately assesses the level of fatigue among adolescent cancer survivors is crucial before any appropriate interventions to reduce their fatigue can be appropriately planned and evaluated. The study aimed to test the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Fatigue Scale for Adolescents. In particular, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine its factorial structure. Methods: A cross-sectional study was employed. Adolescents (13- to 18-year-olds) who had survived cancer and attended medical follow-up at the outpatient clinic in Hong Kong were invited to participate. The internal consistency, content validity and construct validity and test-retest reliability of the Chinese version of the Fatigue Scale for Adolescents were assessed. Results: The content validity index was 0.92. There was a strong positive correlation between adolescents' levels of fatigue and depressive symptoms (r=0.53) and a strong negative correlation between adolescents' levels of fatigue and quality of life (r=-0.58). The mean levels of fatigue of the survivors group was significantly lower than that of those still receiving treatment in hospital, but significantly higher than that of their healthy counterparts. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that there were 4 factors underlying the Chinese version of the Cancer Module. Conclusions: The findings of the study add further evidence that the Chinese version of the Fatigue Scale for Adolescents (12-item) can be used as a reliable and valid tool in assessing cancer-related fatigue among Hong Kong Chinese adolescents who have survived cancer.published_or_final_versio

    Wide-Field Survey of Globular Clusters in M31. I. A Catalog of New Clusters

    We present the result of a wide-field survey of globular clusters (GCs) in M31 covering a 3deg x 3deg field c. We have searched for GCs on CCD images taken with Washington CMT1 filters at the KPNO 0.9 m telescope using steps: (1) inspection of morphological parameters given by the SExtractor package such as stellarity, full maximum, and ellipticity; (2) consulting the spectral types and radial velocities obtained from spectra takena spectrograph at the WIYN 3.5 m telescope; and (3) visual inspection of the images of each object. We have and GC candidates, of which 605 are newly found GCs and GC candidates and 559 are previously known GCs. Amoects there are 113 genuine GCs, 258 probable GCs, and 234 possible GCs, according to our classification critee known objects there are 383 genuine GCs, 109 probable GCs, and 67 possible GCs. In total there are 496 genprobable GCs and 301 possible GCs. Most of these newly found GCs have T1 magnitudes of 17.5 - 19.5 mag, [17.9 < V < 19.9 mag assuming (C-T1) ~ 1.5], and (C-T1) colors in the range 1 - 2.Comment: accepted by AJ, using emulateapj.cl

    Dissolved carbon biogeochemistry and export in mangrove-dominated rivers of the Florida Everglades

    The Shark and Harney rivers, located on the southwest coast of Florida, USA, originate in the freshwater, karstic marshes of the Everglades and flow through the largest contiguous mangrove forest in North America. In November 2010 and 2011, dissolved carbon sourceā€“sink dynamics was examined in these rivers during SF6 tracer release experiments. Approximately 80ā€Æ% of the total dissolved carbon flux out of the Shark and Harney rivers during these experiments was in the form of inorganic carbon, either via airā€“water CO2 exchange or longitudinal flux of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) to the coastal ocean. Between 42 and 48ā€Æ% of the total mangrove-derived DIC flux into the rivers was emitted to the atmosphere, with the remaining being discharged to the coastal ocean. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) represented ca. 10ā€Æ% of the total mangrove-derived dissolved carbon flux from the forests to the rivers. The sum of mangrove-derived DIC and DOC export from the forest to these rivers was estimated to be at least 18.9 to 24.5ā€Æmmolā€Æmāˆ’2ā€Ædāˆ’1, a rate lower than other independent estimates from Shark River and from other mangrove forests. Results from these experiments also suggest that in Shark and Harney rivers, mangrove contribution to the estuarine flux of dissolved carbon to the ocean is less than 10ā€Æ%
