Two Clusters with Radio-quiet Cooling Cores
Radio lobes inflated by active galactic nuclei at the centers of clusters are
a promising candidate for halting condensation in clusters with short central
cooling times because they are common in such clusters. In order to test the
AGN-heating hypothesis, we obtained Chandra observations of two clusters with
short central cooling times yet no evidence for AGN activity: Abell 1650 and
Abell 2244. The cores of these clusters indeed appear systematically different
from cores with more prominent radio emission. They do not have significant
central temperature gradients, and their central entropy levels are markedly
higher than in clusters with stronger radio emission, corresponding to central
cooling times ~ 1 Gigayear. Also, there is no evidence for fossil X-ray
cavities produced by an earlier episode of AGN heating. We suggest that either
(1) the central gas has not yet cooled to the point at which feedback is
necessary to prevent it from condensing, possibly because it is conductively
stabilized, or (2) the gas experienced a major heating event Gyr in
the past and has not required feedback since then. The fact that these clusters
with no evident feedback have higher central entropy and therefore longer
central cooling times than clusters with obvious AGN feedback strongly suggests
that AGNs supply the feedback necessary to suppress condensation in clusters

Hyporheic Exchange and Water Chemistry of Two Arctic Tundra Streams of Contrasting Geomorphology
The North Slope of Alaska’s Brooks Range is underlain by continuous permafrost, but an active layer of thawed sediments develops at the tundra surface and beneath streambeds during the summer, facilitating hyporheic exchange. Our goal was to understand how active layer extent and stream geomorphology influence hyporheic exchange and nutrient chemistry. We studied two arctic tundra streams of contrasting geomorphology: a high-gradient, alluvial stream with riffle-pool sequences and a low-gradient, peat-bottomed stream with large deep pools connected by deep runs. Hyporheic exchange occurred to ~50 cm beneath the alluvial streambed and to only ~15 cm beneath the peat streambed. The thaw bulb was deeper than the hyporheic exchange zone in both stream types. The hyporheic zone was a net source of ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus in both stream types. The hyporheic zone was a net source of nitrate in the alluvial stream, but a net nitrate sink in the peat stream. The mass flux of nutrients regenerated from the hyporheic zones in these two streams was a small portion of the surface water mass flux. Although small, hyporheic sources of regenerated nutrients help maintain the in-stream nutrient balance. If future warming in the arctic increases the depth of the thaw bulb, it may not increase the vertical extent of hyporheic exchange. The greater impacts on annual contributions of hyporheic regeneration are likely to be due to longer thawed seasons, increased sediment temperatures or changes in geomorphology
Renormalization of the charged scalar field in curved space
The DeWitt-Schwinger proper time point-splitting procedure is applied to a
massive complex scalar field with arbitrary curvature coupling interacting with
a classical electromagnetic field in a general curved spacetime. The scalar
field current is found to have a linear divergence. The presence of the
external background gauge field is found to modify the stress-energy tensor
results of Christensen for the neutral scalar field by adding terms of the form
to the logarithmic counterterms. These results are shown to be
expected from an analysis of the degree of divergence of scalar quantum

The Chandra XBootes Survey - III: Optical and Near-IR Counterparts
The XBootes Survey is a 5-ks Chandra survey of the Bootes Field of the NOAO
Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS). This survey is unique in that it is the largest
(9.3 deg^2), contiguous region imaged in X-ray with complementary deep optical
and near-IR observations. We present a catalog of the optical counterparts to
the 3,213 X-ray point sources detected in the XBootes survey. Using a Bayesian
identification scheme, we successfully identified optical counterparts for 98%
of the X-ray point sources. The optical colors suggest that the optically
detected galaxies are a combination of z<1 massive early-type galaxies and
bluer star-forming galaxies whose optical AGN emission is faint or obscured,
whereas the majority of the optically detected point sources are likely quasars
over a large redshift range. Our large area, X-ray bright, optically deep
survey enables us to select a large sub-sample of sources (773) with high X-ray
to optical flux ratios (f_x/f_o>10). These objects are likely high redshift
and/or dust obscured AGN. These sources have generally harder X-ray spectra
than sources with 0.1<f_x/f_o<10. Of the 73 X-ray sources with no optical
counterpart in the NDWFS catalog, 47 are truly optically blank down to R~25.5
(the average 50% completeness limit of the NDWFS R-band catalogs). These

Multilocus Sequence Typing Methods for the Emerging Campylobacter Species C. hyointestinalis, C. lanienae, C. sputorum, C. concisus, and C. curvus
Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) systems have been reported previously for multiple food- and food animal-associated Campylobacter species (e.g., C. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, and C. fetus) to both differentiate strains and identify clonal lineages. These MLST methods focused primarily on campylobacters of human clinical (e.g., C. jejuni) or veterinary (e.g., C. fetus) relevance. However, other, emerging, Campylobacter species have been isolated increasingly from environmental, food animal, or human clinical samples. We describe herein four MLST methods for five emerging Campylobacter species: C. hyointestinalis, C. lanienae, C. sputorum, C. concisus, and C. curvus. The concisus/curvus method uses the loci aspA, atpA, glnA, gltA, glyA, ilvD, and pgm, whereas the other methods use the seven loci defined for C. jejuni (i.e., aspA, atpA, glnA, gltA, glyA, pgm, and tkt). Multiple food animal and human clinical C. hyointestinalis (n = 48), C. lanienae (n = 34), and C. sputorum (n = 24) isolates were typed, along with 86 human clinical C. concisus and C. curvus isolates. A large number of sequence types were identified using all four MLST methods. Additionally, these methods speciated unequivocally isolates that had been typed ambiguously using other molecular-based speciation methods, such as 16S rDNA sequencing. Finally, the design of degenerate primer pairs for some methods permitted the typing of related species; for example, the C. hyointestinalis primer pairs could be used to type C. fetus strains. Therefore, these novel Campylobacter MLST methods will prove useful in differentiating strains of multiple, emerging Campylobacter species
HST/ACS Emission Line Imaging of Low Redshift 3CR Radio Galaxies I: The Data
We present 19 nearby (z<0.3) 3CR radio galaxies imaged at low- and
high-excitation as part of a Cycle 15 Hubble Space Telescope snapshot survey
with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. These images consist of exposures of the
H-alpha (6563 \AA, plus [NII] contamination) and [OIII] 5007 \AA emission lines
using narrow-band linear ramp filters adjusted according to the redshift of the
target. To facilitate continuum subtraction, a single-pointing 60 s line-free
exposure was taken with a medium-band filter appropriate for the target's
redshift. We discuss the steps taken to reduce these images independently of
the automated recalibration pipeline so as to use more recent ACS flat-field
data as well as to better reject cosmic rays. We describe the method used to
produce continuum-free (pure line-emission) images, and present these images
along with qualitative descriptions of the narrow-line region morphologies we
observe. We present H-alpha+[NII] and [OIII] line fluxes from aperture
photometry, finding the values to fall expectedly on the redshift-luminosity
trend from a past HST/WFPC2 emission line study of a larger, generally higher
redshift subset of the 3CR. We also find expected trends between emission line
luminosity and total radio power, as well as a positive correlation between the
size of the emission line region and redshift. We discuss the associated
interpretation of these results, and conclude with a summary of future work

A machine learning platform to optimize the translation of personalized network models to the clinic
PURPOSE
Dynamic network models predict clinical prognosis and inform therapeutic intervention by elucidating disease-driven aberrations at the systems level. However, the personalization of model predictions requires the profiling of multiple model inputs, which hampers clinical translation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS
We applied APOPTO-CELL, a prognostic model of apoptosis signaling, to showcase the establishment of computational platforms that require a reduced set of inputs. We designed two distinct and complementary pipelines: a probabilistic approach to exploit a consistent subpanel of inputs across the whole cohort (Ensemble) and a machine learning approach to identify a reduced protein set tailored for individual patients (Tree). Development was performed on a virtual cohort of 3,200,000 patients, with inputs estimated from clinically relevant protein profiles. Validation was carried out in an in-house stage III colorectal cancer cohort, with inputs profiled in surgical resections by reverse phase protein array (n = 120) and/or immunohistochemistry (n = 117).
RESULTS
Ensemble and Tree reproduced APOPTO-CELL predictions in the virtual patient cohort with 92% and 99% accuracy while decreasing the number of inputs to a consistent subset of three proteins (40% reduction) or a personalized subset of 2.7 proteins on average (46% reduction), respectively. Ensemble and Tree retained prognostic utility in the in-house colorectal cancer cohort. The association between the Ensemble accuracy and prognostic value (Spearman ρ = 0.43; P = .02) provided a rationale to optimize the input composition for specific clinical settings. Comparison between profiling by reverse phase protein array (gold standard) and immunohistochemistry (clinical routine) revealed that the latter is a suitable technology to quantify model inputs.
CONCLUSION
This study provides a generalizable framework to optimize the development of network-based prognostic assays and, ultimately, to facilitate their integration in the routine clinical workflow
Microglia regulate myelin growth and integrity in the central nervous system
Myelin is required for the function of neuronal axons in the central nervous system, but the mechanisms that support myelin health are unclear. Although macrophages in the central nervous system have been implicated in myelin health(1), it is unknown which macrophage populations are involved and which aspects they influence. Here we show that resident microglia are crucial for the maintenance of myelin health in adulthood in both mice and humans. We demonstrate that microglia are dispensable for developmental myelin ensheathment. However, they are required for subsequent regulation of myelin growth and associated cognitive function, and for preservation of myelin integrity by preventing its degeneration. We show that loss of myelin health due to the absence of microglia is associated with the appearance of a myelinating oligodendrocyte state with altered lipid metabolism. Moreover, this mechanism is regulated through disruption of the TGFβ1–TGFβR1 axis. Our findings highlight microglia as promising therapeutic targets for conditions in which myelin growth and integrity are dysregulated, such as in ageing and neurodegenerative disease(2,3)
Search for CP Violation in the Decay Z -> b (b bar) g
About three million hadronic decays of the Z collected by ALEPH in the years
1991-1994 are used to search for anomalous CP violation beyond the Standard
Model in the decay Z -> b \bar{b} g. The study is performed by analyzing
angular correlations between the two quarks and the gluon in three-jet events
and by measuring the differential two-jet rate. No signal of CP violation is
found. For the combinations of anomalous CP violating couplings, and , limits of \hat{h}_b < 0.59h^{\ast}_{b} < 3.02$ are given at 95\% CL.Comment: 8 pages, 1 postscript figure, uses here.sty, epsfig.st
Protest Cycles and Political Process: American Peace Movements in the Nuclear Age
Since the dawn of the nuclear age small groups of activists have consistently protested both the content of United States national security policy, and the process by which it is made. Only occasionally, however, has concern about nuclear weapons spread beyond these relatively marginal groups, generated substantial public support, and reached mainstream political institutions. In this paper, I use histories of peace protest and analyses of the inside of these social movements and theoretical work on protest cycles to explain cycles of movement engagement and quiescence in terms of their relation to external political context, or the "structure of political opportunity." I begin with a brief review of the relevant literature on the origins of movements, noting parallels in the study of interest groups. Building on recent literature on political opportunity structure, I suggest a theoretical framework for understanding the lifecycle of a social movement that emphasizes the interaction between activist choices and political context, proposing a six-stage process through which challenging movements develop. Using this theoretical framework I examine the four cases of relatively broad antinuclear weapons mobilization in postwar America.
