Using Technology within the Teacher Preparation Program as a Model for Effective Instruction
This article describes a methods course for teachers of elementary science and how it was enhanced to increase students’ abilities and attitudes toward using technology as a tool in teaching science. The course was enhanced as a result of the Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT) project. Prior to this project, the course was known for its constructivist approach, cooperative group activities, and experiential base that allowed students to actually do and teach elementary science. As a result of VCEPT, the class now also features an elaborate technology component. Technology of many types are regularly modeled in the methods classroom. Students are exposed to and have hands-on experiences with selected technologies and are asked to use technology in order to complete a variety of different projects
Non equilibrium phase transition with gravitational-like interaction in a cloud of cold atoms
We propose to use a cloud of laser cooled atoms in a quasi two dimensional
trap to investigate a non equilibrium collapse phase transition in presence of
gravitational-like interaction. Using theoretical arguments and numerical
simulations, we show that, like in two dimensional gravity, a transition to a
collapsed state occurs below a critical temperature. In addition and as a
signature of the non equilibrium nature of the system, persistent particles
currents, dramatically increasing close to the phase transition, are observed.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Use of Rhetoric in 1960\u27s Protest Music: A Case Study of Bob Dylan\u27s Music
The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of rhetoric in protest music of the 1960s, using Bob Dylan’s music as a case study. The 1960s was a time of revolution and social change in the United States. Throughout this time, protest music served as an outlet for musicians to voice their support for this change. By conducting a rhetorical analysis, this study assesses the ways in which the tools of classical rhetoric can be applied to the music of this time. The analysis focuses on the rhetorical functions of this music in the context of the protest movements of the 1960s. The study examines the ways in which this music exemplifies elements of classical rhetoric and concludes by examining the impact this music had on the protest movements of the 1960s
Polish Web resources described in the "Polish World" directory (1997). Characteristics of domains and their conservation state
For the purposes of this study, the print version of the Polish World directory by Martin Miszczak (Helion, 1997) was used to create an index of historical URLs and verify their current availability and presence in Web archives. The quantitative analysis of the index was prepared to obtain the rank data on top-level domains (TLDs) and subdomains, while the language of pages published in domains other than .PL was also examined. This study uncovered a low current availability (21.77 per cent) of Polish World URIs with a 79.6 presence in Web archives (60.35 for addresses unreachable today). Forty-six per cent of the addresses from the directory were available on domains other than .PL, of which only 15.36 per cent had content in Polish. It would seem that in 1997, Polish Internet users were able to use Polish-centric resources, mostly already available through the Polish country domain. The 180 domain names with the .PL suffix uncovered during the study constitute around 20 per cent of .PL domain names active until at least the end of 1996 on the Web.W ramach badania wykorzystano drukowaną wersję katalogu Polish World Martina Miszczaka (wyd. Wyodrębnione w trakcie badania 180 wspólnych nazw domenowych z domeny PL to około 20 proc. nazw domenowych PL aktywnych przynajmniej do końca 1996 roku w sieci WWW
Low and high intensity velocity selective coherent population trapping in a two-level system
An experimental investigation is made of sub-recoil cooling by velocity
selective coherent population trapping in a two-level system in Sr. The
experiment is carried out using the narrow linewidth intercombination line at
689 nm. Here, the ratio between the recoil shift and the linewidth is as high
as 0.64. We show that, on top of a broader momentum profile, subrecoil features
develop, whose amplitude is strongly dependent on the detuning from resonance.
We attribute this structure to a velocity selective coherent population
trapping mechanism. We also show that the population trapping phenomenon leads
to complex momentum profiles in the case of highly saturated transitions,
displaying a multitude of subrecoil features at integer multiples of the recoil
momentum.Comment: 6 pages and 7 figure
Porphyrias associated with malignant tumors: Results of treatment with ionizing irradiation
Background: Porphyrin metabolism disorders, known as porphyria, represent inherited or acquired diseases. The development of porphyria due to light sensibility occurs especially with exposure to wavelengths in the range of 300-700 nm. Skin reactions and neurovisceral dysfunctions are known side effects of ionizing irradiation. It can be postulated that during or after ionizing irradiation treatment of patients affected with tumor and porphyria, severe side effects might appear, in contrast to patients without porphyria. This paper describes the treatment of 2 patients affected with tumor and concomitant porphyria. Patients: One female patient suffering from intermittent porphyria and breast cancer and one male patient suffering from porphyria cutanea tarda and bladder cancer were treated with ionizing irradiation (electrons and photons). No abnormalities nor any severe general or local side effects could be observed. Conclusion: Radiation therapy is not a `stimulating' factor in activating porphyria symptoms
