The Application of a Cylindrical-spherical Floating Ring Bearing as a Device to Control Stability of Turbogenerators
The development of a new device to control stability of turbogenerators is described. The device comprises a floating ring installed between the journal and bearing housing of a fluid film bearing. The journal and the inner surface of the ring are cylindrical while the outer surface of the ring and bearing surface are spherical providing axial location of the ring and self-alignment of the bearing. The employment of this device would lead to a consistent machine performance. System stability may be controlled by changing a number of bearing and floating ring parameters. This device also offers an additional advantage of having a very low frictional characteristic. A feasibility study was carried out to investigate the suitability of the new device to turbogenerator applications. Both theoretical analysis and experimental observations were carried out. Initial results suggest that the new floating ring device is a competitive alternative to other conventional arrangements
Measurements of flow phenomena induced by suction through perforated and partially plugged surfaces
Efforts were directed towards completing construction of the windtunnel test section, assembling instrumentation, programming the data acquisition and reduction system, adjusting the streamwise pressure gradient of the test section, calibrating the hot-wire anemometer probe, and constructing and testing a smoke generator. The test section was installed in the wind tunnel and is completely operational. The streamwise pressure gradient was adjusted to be nominally zero at a free-stream velocity of 3.05 m/s (10 ft/s). This was accomplished by adjusting the upper wall of the test section to be slightly divergent. The change in static pressure between any two streamwise locations in the test section was less than one percent of the free-stream dynamic pressure. A suitable means was found for accurately calibrating the hot-wire probe which is used to measure boundary-layer velocity profiles and fluctuating velocities
Experimental study of flow due to an isolated suction hole and a partially plugged suction slot
Details for construction of a model of a partially plugged, laminar flow control, suction slot and an isolated hole are presented. The experimental wind tunnel facility and instrumentation is described. Preliminary boundary layer velocity profiles (without suction model) are presented and shown to be in good agreement with the Blasius laminar profile. Recommendations for the completion of the study are made. An experimental program for study of transition on a rotating disk is described along with preliminary disturbance amplification rate data
Comparison of hot wire/laser velocimeter turbulence intensity measurements
The question of whether a random measure of particle velocities yields a good statistical estimate of the stationary condition of the turbulence flow field was investigated by comparing hot-wire and laser velocimeter turbulence intensity measurements. Great care was taken to insure that the instrument precision of both the laser velocimeter and hot wire was maximized. In this attempt to reduce the measurement uncertainties in the hot wire, direct digitization of the analog output signal was performed with point-by-point conversion to velocity through a spline fit calibration curve and the turbulence intensity function was calculated statistically. Frequent calibrations of the hot wire were performed using the laser velocimeter as the velocity standard to account for the presence of the small seed particles in the air flow and signal drift in the hot wire
Automatic annotation of bioinformatics workflows with biomedical ontologies
Legacy scientific workflows, and the services within them, often present
scarce and unstructured (i.e. textual) descriptions. This makes it difficult to
find, share and reuse them, thus dramatically reducing their value to the
community. This paper presents an approach to annotating workflows and their
subcomponents with ontology terms, in an attempt to describe these artifacts in
a structured way. Despite a dearth of even textual descriptions, we
automatically annotated 530 myExperiment bioinformatics-related workflows,
including more than 2600 workflow-associated services, with relevant
ontological terms. Quantitative evaluation of the Information Content of these
terms suggests that, in cases where annotation was possible at all, the
