Sonic boom effect on fish: Observations
Motion pictures of fish in a small tank at the time a bullet traveling 1200 m/sec passes a few centimeters above indicate that fish sense the passage of the shock wave but suffer no ill effects. The pressure rise at the bow shock wave was 0.26 atm or 275 times that associated with a strong sonic boom, for example, from the proposed supersonic transport
Distribution, Abundance, and Biological Characteristics of Groundfish off the Coast of Washington, Oregon, and California, 1977-1986
We compare results of bottom trawl surveys off Washington, Oregon, and California in 1977, 1980, 1983, and 1986 to discern trends in population abundance, distribution, and
biology. Catch per unit of effort, area-swept biomass estimates, and age and length compositions for 12 commercially important west coast groundfishes are presented to illustrate trends over the lO-year period. We discuss the precision, accuracy, and statistical significance of observed trends in abundance estimates. The influence of water temperature on the distribution of groundfishes is also briefly examined. Abundance estimates of canary rockfish, Sebastes pinniger, and yellowtail rockfish, S. Jlavidus, declined during the study
period; greater declines were observed in Pacific ocean perch, S. alutus, lingcod, Ophiodon elongatus, and arrowtooth flounder, Atheresthes stomias. Biomass estimates of Pacific hake, Merluccius productus, and English, rex, and Dover soles (Pleuronectes vetulus, Errex zachirus,
and Microstomus pacificus) increased, while bocaccio, S. paucispinis, and chilipepper, S. goodei, were stable. Sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria, biomass estimates increased markedly from 1977 to 1980 and declined moderately thereafter. Precision was lowest for rockfishes, lingcod, and sablefish; it was highest for flatfishes because they were uniformly distributed. The accuracy of survey estimates could be gauged only for yellowtail and canary rockfish and sablefish. All fishery-based analyses produced much larger estimates of abundance than bottom trawl surveys-indicative of the true catchability of survey trawls. Population trends from all analyses compared well except in canary rockfish, the species that presents the
greatest challenge to obtaining reasonable precision and one that casts doubts on the usefulness of bottom trawl surveys for estimating its abundance. (PDF file contains 78 pages.
Simple chamber facilitates chemiluminescent detection of bacteria
Test chamber enables rapid estimation of bacteria in a test sample through the reaction of luminol and an oxidant with the cytochrome C portion of certain species of bacteria. Intensity of the light emitted in the reaction is a function of the specific bacteria in the test sample
Giotto Extended Mission (GEM)
The primary objectives of the Giotto Extended Mission (GEM), are to determine the composition and physical state of the Grigg Skjellerup Comet's nucleus; to determine the processes that govern the composition and distribution of neutral and ionized species in the cometary atmosphere. Giotto consists of a single European Space Agency (ESA) spacecraft that was launched in 1985 from Center Spatial Guyanis in French Guiana on an Ariane launch vehicle. After a successful launch into geostationary orbit and a heliocentric transfer trajectory, the spacecraft successfully encountered Halley's Comet in 1986. One month after encountering Halley's Comet, Mar. 1986, the spacecraft was placed in hibernation in a heliocentric orbit slightly less than 1 AU. Between Feb. and Jul. 1990 the spacecraft was successfully reactivated, checked out, and placed on a trajectory course to intercept comet Grigg Skjellerup. The spacecraft has been in hibernation since Jul. 1990. Information is presented in tabular form in the following areas: coverage goals, Deep Space Network Support, frequency assignments, telemetry, command, and tracking support responsibility
Free flight determination of boundary layer transition on small scale cones in the presence of surface ablation
To assess the possibility of achieving extensive laminar flow on conical vehicles during hyperbolic entry, the Ames Research Center has had an ongoing program to study boundary-layer transition on ablating cones. Boundary layer transition results are presented from ballistic range experiments with models that ablated at dimensionless mass transfer rates comparable to those expected for full scale flight at speeds up to 17 km/sec. It was found possible to measure the surface recession and hence more accurately identify regions of laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow along generators of the recovered cones. Some preliminary results using this technique are presented
Nuclear quantum effects in water exchange around lithium and fluoride ions
We employ classical and ring polymer molecular dynamics simulations to study
the effect of nuclear quantum fluctuations on the structure and the water
exchange dynamics of aqueous solutions of lithium and fluoride ions. While we
obtain reasonably good agreement with experimental data for solutions of
lithium by augmenting the Coulombic interactions between the ion and the water
molecules with a standard Lennard-Jones ion-oxygen potential, the same is not
true for solutions of fluoride, for which we find that a potential with a
softer repulsive wall gives much better agreement. A small degree of
destabilization of the first hydration shell is found in quantum simulations of
both ions when compared with classical simulations, with the shell becoming
less sharply defined and the mean residence time of the water molecules in the
shell decreasing. In line with these modest differences, we find that the
mechanisms of the exchange processes are unaffected by quantization, so a
classical description of these reactions gives qualitatively correct and
quantitatively reasonable results. We also find that the quantum effects in
solutions of lithium are larger than in solutions of fluoride. This is partly
due to the stronger interaction of lithium with water molecules, partly due to
the lighter mass of lithium, and partly due to competing quantum effects in the
hydration of fluoride, which are absent in the hydration of lithium.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
Dismembered: Native Disenrollment and the Battle for Human Rights
While the number of federally recognized Native nations in the United States are increasing, the population figures for existing tribal nations are declining. This depopulation is not being perpetrated by the federal government, but by Native governments that are banishing, denying, or disenrolling Native citizens at an unprecedented rate. Since the 1990s, tribal belonging has become more of a privilege than a sacred right. Political and legal dismemberment has become a national phenomenon with nearly eighty Native nations, in at least twenty states, terminating the rights of indigenous citizens. The first comprehensive examination of the origins and significance of tribal disenrollment, Dismembered examines this disturbing trend, which often leaves the disenrolled tribal members with no recourse or appeal. At the center of the issue is how Native nations are defined today and who has the fundamental rights to belong. By looking at hundreds of tribal constitutions and talking with both disenrolled members and tribal officials, the authors demonstrate the damage this practice is having across Indian Country and ways to address the problem.https://scholarship.richmond.edu/bookshelf/1328/thumbnail.jp
K-Space Interactive Search
In this paper we will present the K-Space1 Interactive Search system for content-based video information retrieval to be demonstrated in the VideOlympics. This system is an exten-sion of the system we developed as part of our participation in TRECVID 2007 [1]. In TRECVID 2007 we created two interfaces, known as the ‘Shot’ based and ‘Broadcast’ based interfaces. Our VideOlympics submission takes these two in-terfaces and the lessons learned from our user experiments, to create a single user interface which attempts to leverage the best aspects of both
Mean-Field Theory of Water-Water Correlations in Electrolyte Solutions
Long-range ion induced water-water correlations were recently observed in
femtosecond elastic second harmonic scattering experiments of electrolyte
solutions. To further the qualitative understanding of these correlations, we
derive an analytical expression that quantifies ion induced dipole-dipole
correlations in a non-interacting gas of dipoles. This model is a logical
extension of Debye-H\"uckel theory that can be used to qualitatively understand
how the combined electric field of the ions induces correlations in the
orientational distributions of the water molecules in an aqueous solution. The
model agrees with results from molecular dynamics simulations and provides an
important starting point for further theoretical work
Inexpensive fusion methods for enhancing feature detection
Recent successful approaches to high-level feature detection in image and video data have treated the problem as a pattern classification task. These typically leverage the techniques learned from statistical machine learning, coupled with ensemble architectures that create multiple feature detection models. Once created, co-occurrence between learned features can be captured to further boost performance. At multiple stages throughout these frameworks, various pieces of evidence can be fused together in order to boost performance. These approaches whilst very successful are computationally expensive, and depending on the task, require the use of significant computational resources. In this paper we propose two fusion methods that aim to combine the output of an initial basic statistical machine learning approach with a lower-quality information source, in order to gain diversity in the classified results whilst requiring only modest computing resources. Our approaches, validated experimentally on TRECVid data, are designed to be complementary to existing frameworks and can be regarded as possible replacements for the more computationally expensive combination strategies used elsewhere
