    Blob ejection from advection-dominated accretion flow: observational consequences

    There is increasing evidence for the presence of an optically thin advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) in low luminosity active galactic nuclei and radio-loud quasars. The present paper is devoted to explore the fate of a blob ejected from an ADAF, and to discuss its observational consequences. It is inevitable for the ejected blob to drastically expand into its surroundings. Consequently, it is expected that a group of relativistic electrons should be accelerated, which may lead to nonthermal flares, since a strong shock will be formed by the interaction between the blob and its surroundings. Then the blob cools down efficiently, leading to the appearance of recombination lines about 10510^5s after its ejection from an ADAF. We apply this model to NGC 4258 for some observational prediction, and to PKS 2149--306 for the explanation of observational evidence. Future simultaneous observations of recombination X-ray lines and continuum emission are highly desired to test the present model.Comment: 4 pages in emulateapj.sty, no figure.     The Case for Optically-Thick High Velocity Broad Line Region Gas in Active Galactic Nuclei

    A combined analysis of the profiles of the main broad quasar emission lines in both Hubble Space Telescope and optical spectra shows that while the profiles of the strong UV lines are quite similar, there is frequently a strong increase in the Ly-alpha/H-alpha ratio in the high-velocity gas. We show that the suggestion that the high velocity gas is optically-thin presents many problems. We show that the relative strengths of the high velocity wings arise naturally in an optically-thick BLR component. An optically-thick model successfully explains the equivalent widths of the lines, the Ly-alpha/H-alpha ratios and flatter Balmer decrements in the line wings, the strengths of CIII] and the lambda 1400 blend, and the strong variability of high-velocity, high-ionization lines (especially HeII and HeI).Comment: 34 pages in AASTeX, including 10 pages of figures.     Roles for Ca2+ mobilization and its regulation in mast cell functions: recent progress

    Ca(2+)mobilization in response to cross-linking of IgE bound to its high affinity receptor, FcεRI, on mast cells is central to immune allergic responses. Stimulated tyrosine phosphorylation caused by this cross-linking activates store-operated Ca(2+)entry that results in sustained Ca(2+)oscillations dependent on Rho family GTPases and phosphoinositide synthesis. Coupling of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca(2+)sensor, stromal interaction molecule 1 (STIM1), to the Ca(2+)-selective channel, Orai1, is regulated by these elements and depends on membrane organization, both at the plasma membrane and at the ER. Mitochondria also contribute to the regulation of Ca(2+)mobilization, and we describe recent evidence that the ER membrane protein vesicle-associated membrane protein-associated protein (VAP) plays a significant role in the coupling between ER and mitochondria in this process. In addition to granule exocytosis, Ca(2+)mobilization in these cells also contributes to stimulated outward trafficking of recycling endosomes and to antigen-stimulated chemotaxis, and it is pathologically regulated by protozoan parasitic invasion

    A series of three tests was conducted using solid rocket propellants to determine the effects a solid rocket plume would have on thermal protective surfaces (TPS). The surfaces tested were those which are baselined for the shuttle vehicle. The propellants used were to simulate the separation solid rocket motors (SSRM) that separate the solid rocket boosters (SRB) from the shuttle launch vehicle. Data cover: (1) the optical effects of the plume environment on spacecraft related surfaces, and (2) the solid particle size, distribution, and composition at TPS sample locations

    A critical synthesis of the role of the pharmacist in oral healthcare and management of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw

    Abstract: Objective: To consolidate extant published evidence in relation to the potential of integrating oral healthcare for patients at risk of developing medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). Methods: A critical synthesis and consolidation of five publications was undertaken. As a mechanism of situating the extant work within the context of primary healthcare provision, the Rainbow Model of Integrated Care was applied as a theoretical lens through which the conceptual findings could be collectively applied to practice. Results: The critical synthesis revealed a thematic emergence relating to both formative and normative integration. The most salient of these were the identification of limited shared clinical records, and disconnection of oral healthcare provision from patients’ general medical care. The three levels of the Rainbow Model of Integrated Care reflected a series of issues for address. Conclusion: In the context of collaborative, multi-disciplinary working for patients at risk of development of MRONJ, pharmacists are a professional group which this research reveals to be an underutilised resource. Reduction of oral health inequality at all levels of patient care is a key priority and this research highlights areas for address in relation to requirements for interprofessional education, optimal communication and policies reflective and facilitative of these

    Fluorescence of thermal control coatings on S0069 and A0114

    Many of the thermal control surfaces exposed to the space environment during the 5.8 year LDEF mission experienced changes in fluorescence. All of the thermal control coatings flown on LDEF experiments S0069 and A0114 were characterized for fluorescence under ambient conditions. Some of the black coatings, having protective overcoats, appear bright yellow under ultraviolet exposure. Urethane based coatings exhibited emission spectra shifts toward longer wavelengths in the visible range. Zinc oxide pigment based coatings experienced a quenching of fluorescence, while zinc orthotitanate pigment based and other ceramic type coatings had no measurable fluorescence

    Fluorescence measurements were made on the thermal control coatings from the Long Duration Experiment Facility (LDEF) S0069, Thermal Control Surfaces Experiment (TCSE); and the A0114, Interaction of Atomic Oxygen with Material Surfaces in Low Earth orbit. Fluorescence was observed in two types of thermal control coatings and is attributed to pigments or binders.
