Laboratory Studies Of The Acoustic Properties Of Samples From The Salton Sea Scientific Drilling Project And Their Relation To Microstructure And Field Measurements
Compressional and shear wave velocities were measured at confining pressures up to
200 MPa for twelve core samples from the depth interval of 600 to 2600 m in the California State 2-14 borehole. Samples were selected to represent the various lithologies, including clean, heavily cemented sandstones, altered, impermeable claystones, and several intermediate siltstones. Velocities measured at ultrasonic frequencies in the laboratory correspond closely with velocities determined from acoustic waveform logs and vertical seismic profiles. The samples exhibit P-wave velocities around 3.5 km/sec at depths above 1250 m, but increase to nearly 5.0 km/sec at 1300 m in depth. Further increases with depth result in compressional wave velocity increasing to nearly 6.0 km/sec. These increases in velocities are related to systematic variations in lithology, microstructure and hydrothermal alteration of originally clay-rich sediments. Scanning electron microscope observations of core samples confirm that local core velocities are determined by the combined effects of pore size distributions, and the proportion of clays and alteration minerals such as epidote present in the form of pore fillings and veins.United States. Quantum Games and Quantum Strategies
We investigate the quantization of non-zero sum games. For the particular
case of the Prisoners' Dilemma we show that this game ceases to pose a dilemma
if quantum strategies are allowed for. We also construct a particular quantum
strategy which always gives reward if played against any classical strategy.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, typographic sign error in the definition of the

Classical and Quantum Interaction of the Dipole
A unified and fully relativistic treatment of the interaction of the electric
and magnetic dipole moments of a particle with the electromagnetic field is
given. New forces on the particle due to the combined effect of electric and
magnetic dipoles are obtained. Four new experiments are proposed, three of
which would observe topological phase shifts.Comment: 10 pages, Latex/Revtex. Some minor errors have been correcte
Transition temperature of a dilute homogeneous imperfect Bose gas
The leading-order effect of interactions on a homogeneous Bose gas is
theoretically predicted to shift the critical temperature by an amount
\Delta\Tc = # a_{scatt} n^{1/3} T_0 from the ideal gas result T_0, where
a_{scatt} is the scattering length and n is the density. There have been
several different theoretical estimates for the numerical coefficient #. We
claim to settle the issue by measuring the numerical coefficient in a lattice
simulation of O(2) phi^4 field theory in three dimensions---an effective theory
which, as observed previously in the literature, can be systematically matched
to the dilute Bose gas problem to reproduce non-universal quantities such as
the critical temperature. We find # = 1.32 +- 0.02.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett; minor changes due to

Ground-state properties of trapped Bose-Fermi mixtures: role of exchange-correlation
We introduce Density Functional Theory for inhomogeneous Bose-Fermi mixtures,
derive the associated Kohn-Sham equations, and determine the
exchange-correlation energy in local density approximation. We solve
numerically the Kohn-Sham system and determine the boson and fermion density
distributions and the ground-state energy of a trapped, dilute mixture beyond
mean-field approximation. The importance of the corrections due to
exchange--correlation is discussed by comparison with current experiments; in
particular, we investigate the effect of of the repulsive potential energy
contribution due to exchange--correlation on the stability of the mixture
against collapse.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (final version as published in Physical Review
Charge dynamics in the Mott insulating phase of the ionic Hubbard model
We extend to charge and bond operators the transformation that maps the ionic
Hubbard model at half filling onto an effective spin Hamiltonian. Using these
operators we calculate the amplitude of the charge density wave in different
dimensions. In one dimension, the charge-charge correlations at large distance
d decay as 1/(d^3 ln^{3/2}d), in spite of the presence of a charge gap, as a
consequence of remaining charge-spin coupling. Bond-bond correlations decay as
(-1)^d 1/(d ln^{3/2}d) as in the usual Hubbard model.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. B printing errors

Quantum optics of a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a quantized light field
We consider the interaction between a Bose-Einstein condensate and a
single-mode quantized light field in the presence of a strong far off-resonant
pump laser. The dynamics is characterized by an exponential instability, hence
the system acts as an atom-photon parametric amplifier. Triggered by a small
injected probe field, or simply by quantum noise, entangled atom-photon pairs
are created which exhibit non-classical correlations similar to those seen
between photons in the optical parametric amplifier. In addition, the quantum
statistics of the matter and light fields depend strongly on the initial state
which triggers the amplifier. Thus by preparing different initial states of the
light field, one can generate matter waves in a variety of quantum states,
demonstrating optical control over the quantum statistics of matter waves
Quantum gates with topological phases
We investigate two models for performing topological quantum gates with the
Aharonov-Bohm (AB) and Aharonov-Casher (AC) effects. Topological one- and
two-qubit Abelian phases can be enacted with the AB effect using charge qubits,
whereas the AC effect can be used to perform all single-qubit gates (Abelian
and non-Abelian) for spin qubits. Possible experimental setups suitable for a
solid state implementation are briefly discussed.Comment: 2 figures, RevTex
