Critical review of Ames Life Science participation in Spacelab Mission Development Test 3: The SMD 3 management study
A management study was conducted to specify activities and problems encountered during the development of procedures for documentation and crew training on experiments, as well as during the design, integration, and delivery of a life sciences experiment payload to Johnson Space Center for a 7 day simulation of a Spacelab mission. Conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future Ames' life sciences projects are included. Broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the environment of space are also addressed
Entangling flux qubits with a bipolar dynamic inductance
We propose a scheme to implement variable coupling between two flux qubits
using the screening current response of a dc Superconducting QUantum
Interference Device (SQUID). The coupling strength is adjusted by the current
bias applied to the SQUID and can be varied continuously from positive to
negative values, allowing cancellation of the direct mutual inductance between
the qubits. We show that this variable coupling scheme permits efficient
realization of universal quantum logic. The same SQUID can be used to determine
the flux states of the qubits.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Planning and managing future space facility projects
To learn how ground-based personnel of a space project plan and organize their work and how such planning and organizing relate to work outcomes, longitudinal study of the management and execution of the Space Lab Mission Development Test 3 (SMD 3) was performed at NASA Ames Research Center. A view of the problems likely to arise in organizations and some methods of coping with these problems are presented as well as the conclusions and recommendations that pertain strictly to SMD 3 management. Emphasis is placed on the broader context of future space facility projects and additional problems that may be anticipated. A model of management that may be used to facilitate problem solving and communication - management by objectives (MBO) is presented. Some problems of communication and emotion management that MBO does not address directly are considered. Models for promoting mature, constructive and satisfying emotional relationships among group members are discussed

A management study was initiated by ARC (Ames Research Center) to specify Spacelab Mission Development Test 3 activities and problems. This report documents the problems encountered and provides conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future ARC life sciences projects. An executive summary of the conclusions and recommendations is provided. The report also addresses broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the space environment
Bose-Einstein Condensation of Magnons in Cs2CuCl4
We report on results of specific heat measurements on single crystals of the
frustrated quasi-2D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4 (T_N=0.595 K) in
external magnetic fields B30 mK. Decreasing B from
high fields leads to the closure of the field-induced gap in the magnon
spectrum at a critical field B_c = 8.51 T and a magnetic phase transition is
clearly seen below B_c. In the vicinity to B_c, the phase transition boundary
is well described by the power-law T_c(B)\propto (B_c-B)^{1/\phi} with the
measured critical exponent \phi\simeq 1.5. These findings are interpreted as a

Transverse fluctuations of grafted polymers
We study the statistical mechanics of grafted polymers of arbitrary stiffness
in a two-dimensional embedding space with Monte Carlo simulations. The
probability distribution function of the free end is found to be highly
anisotropic and non-Gaussian for typical semiflexible polymers. The reduced
distribution in the transverse direction, a Gaussian in the stiff and flexible
limits, shows a double peak structure at intermediate stiffnesses. We also
explore the response to a transverse force applied at the polymer free end. We
identify F-Actin as an ideal benchmark for the effects discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review
Anomalous magnetotransport in (YGd)Co alloys: interplay of disorder and itinerant metamagnetism
New mechanism of magnetoresistivity in itinerant metamagnets with a
structural disorder is introduced basing on analysis of experimental results on
magnetoresistivity, susceptibility, and magnetization of structurally
disordered alloys (YGd)Co. In this series, YCo is an
enhanced Pauli paramagnet, whereas GdCo is a ferrimagnet (T=400
K) with Gd sublattice coupled antiferromagnetically to the itinerant Co-3d
electrons. The alloys are paramagnetic for . Large positive
magnetoresistivity has been observed in the alloys with magnetic ground state
at temperatures TT. We show that this unusual feature is linked to
a combination of structural disorder and metamagnetic instability of itinerant
Co-3d electrons. This new mechanism of the magnetoresistivity is common for a
broad class of materials featuring a static magnetic disorder and itinerant

Precursor phenomena at the magnetic ordering of the cubic helimagnet FeGe
We report on detailed magnetic measurements on the cubic helimagnet FeGe in
external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic
order at K. Precursor phenomena display a complex succession of
temperature-driven crossovers and phase transitions in the vicinity of .
The A-phase region, present below and fields kOe, is split in
several pockets. Relying on a modified phenomenological theory for chiral
magnets, the main part of the A-phase could indicate the existence of a
Skyrmion lattice, the adjacent A pocket, however, appears to be related to
helicoids propagating in directions perpendicular to the applied field.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
