Quasifree photoabsorption on neutron-proton pairs in 3He
Three-body photodisintegration of 3He is calculated in the photon energy
range 200 - 400 MeV assuming quasifree absorption on np pairs both in initial
quasideuteron and singlet configurations. The model includes the normal
nucleonic current, explicit meson exchange currents and the Delta(1232)-isobar
excitation. The total cross section is increased by a factor of about 1.5
compared with free deuteron photodisintegration. Well below and above the Delta
region also some spin observables differ significantly from the ones of free
deuteron disintegration due to the more compressed wave function of the
correlated np pairs in 3He compared to the deuteron. The initial singlet state
causes a significant change in the analyzing power Ay. These differences could
presumably be seen at the conjugate angles where two-body effects are maximized
and where photoreactions could complement similar pion absorption experiments.

Discovering Regulatory Overlapping RNA Transcripts
STEREO is a novel algorithm that discovers cis-regulatory RNA interactions by assembling complete and potentially overlapping same-strand RNA transcripts from tiling expression data. STEREO first identifies coherent segments of transcription and then discovers individual transcripts that are consistent with the observed segments given intensity and shape constraints. We used STEREO to identify 1446 regions of overlapping transcription in two strains of yeast, including transcripts that comprise a new form of molecular toggle switch that controls gene variegation
Anomalous magnetotransport in (YGd)Co alloys: interplay of disorder and itinerant metamagnetism
New mechanism of magnetoresistivity in itinerant metamagnets with a
structural disorder is introduced basing on analysis of experimental results on
magnetoresistivity, susceptibility, and magnetization of structurally
disordered alloys (YGd)Co. In this series, YCo is an
enhanced Pauli paramagnet, whereas GdCo is a ferrimagnet (T=400
K) with Gd sublattice coupled antiferromagnetically to the itinerant Co-3d
electrons. The alloys are paramagnetic for . Large positive
magnetoresistivity has been observed in the alloys with magnetic ground state
at temperatures TT. We show that this unusual feature is linked to
a combination of structural disorder and metamagnetic instability of itinerant
Co-3d electrons. This new mechanism of the magnetoresistivity is common for a
broad class of materials featuring a static magnetic disorder and itinerant
metamagnetism.Comment: 7 pages 7 figure
Quantum Dissipative Dynamics of the Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope in the Single-Spin Detection Limit
We study a model of a magnetic resonance force microscope (MRFM) based on the
cyclic adiabatic inversion technique as a high-resolution tool to detect single
electron spins. We investigate the quantum dynamics of spin and cantilever in
the presence of coupling to an environment. To obtain the reduced dynamics of
the combined system of spin and cantilever, we use the Feynman-Vernon influence
functional and get results valid at any temperature as well as at arbitrary
system-bath coupling strength. We propose that the MRFM can be used as a
quantum measurement device, i.e., not only to detect the modulus of the spin
but also its direction
The Predictive Value of PITX2 DNA Methylation for High-Risk Breast Cancer Therapy: Current Guidelines, Medical Needs, and Challenges
High-risk breast cancer comprises distinct tumor entities such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) which is characterized by lack of estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) and the HER2 receptor and breast malignancies which have spread to more than three lymph nodes. For such patients, current (inter)national guidelines recommend anthracycline-based chemotherapy as the standard of care, but not all patients do equally benefit from such a chemotherapy. To further improve therapy decision-making, predictive biomarkers are of high, so far unmet, medical need. In this respect, predictive biomarkers would permit patient selection for a particular kind of chemotherapy and, by this, guide physicians to optimize the treatment plan for each patient individually. Besides DNA mutations, DNA methylation as a patient selection marker has received increasing clinical attention. For instance, significant evidence has accumulated that methylation of the PITX2 (paired-like homeodomain transcription factor 2) gene might serve as a novel predictive and prognostic biomarker, for a variety of cancer diseases. This review highlights the current understanding of treatment modalities of high-risk breast cancer patients with a focus on recommended treatment options, with special attention on the future clinical application of PITX2 as a predictive biomarker to personalize breast cancer management
Tune in to your emotions: a robust personalized affective music player
The emotional power of music is exploited in a personalized affective music player (AMP) that selects music for mood enhancement. A biosignal approach is used to measure listeners’ personal emotional reactions to their own music as input for affective user models. Regression and kernel density estimation are applied to model the physiological changes the music elicits. Using these models, personalized music selections based on an affective goal state can be made. The AMP was validated in real-world trials over the course of several weeks. Results show that our models can cope with noisy situations and handle large inter-individual differences in the music domain. The AMP augments music listening where its techniques enable automated affect guidance. Our approach provides valuable insights for affective computing and user modeling, for which the AMP is a suitable carrier application
Further analysis of the quantum critical point of CeLaRuSi
New data on the spin dynamics and the magnetic order of
CeLaRuSi are presented. The importance of the Kondo
effect at the quantum critical point of this system is emphasized from the
behaviour of the relaxation rate at high temperature and from the variation of
the ordered moment with respect to the one of the N\'eel temperature for

Consistent Treatment of Relativistic Effects in Electrodisintegration of the Deuteron
The influence of relativistic contributions to deuteron electrodisintegration
is systematically studied in various kinematic regions of energy and momentum
transfer. As theoretical framework the equation-of-motion and the unitarily
equivalent S-matrix approaches are used. In a (p/M)-expansion, all leading
order relativistic -exchange contributions consistent with the Bonn OBEPQ
model are included. In addition, static heavy meson exchange currents including
boost terms, -currents, and -isobar contributions
are considered. Sizeable effects from the various relativistic two-body
contributions, mainly from -exchange, have been found in inclusive form
factors and exclusive structure functions for a variety of kinematic regions.Comment: 41 pages revtex including 15 postscript figure
Compton scattering on the proton, neutron, and deuteron in chiral perturbation theory to O(Q^4)
We study Compton scattering in systems with A=1 and 2 using chiral
perturbation theory up to fourth order. For the proton we fit the two
undetermined parameters in the O(Q^4) p amplitude of McGovern to
experimental data in the region MeV, obtaining a
chi^2/d.o.f. of 133/113. This yields a model-independent extraction of proton
polarizabilities based solely on low-energy data: alpha_p=12.1 +/- 1.1 (stat.)
+/- 0.5 (theory) and beta_p=3.4 +/- 1.1 (stat.) +/- 0.1 (theory), both in units
of 10^{-4} fm^3. We also compute Compton scattering on deuterium to O(Q^4). The
d amplitude is a sum of one- and two-nucleon mechanisms, and contains
two undetermined parameters, which are related to the isoscalar nucleon
polarizabilities. We fit data points from three recent d scattering
experiments with a chi^2/d.o.f.=26.6/20, and find alpha_N=13.0 +/- 1.9 (stat.)
+3.9/-1.5 (theory) and a beta_N that is consistent with zero within sizeable
error bars.Comment: 57 pages, 16 figures. Substantial changes. Correction of errors in
deuteron calculation results in different values for isoscalar
polarizabilities. Results for the proton are unaffected. Text modified to
reflect this change, and also to clarify various point
