Space station integrated wall design and penetration damage control. Task 3: Theoretical analysis of penetration mechanics
The efforts to provide a penetration code called PEN4 version 10 is documented for calculation of projectile and target states for the impact of 2024-T3 aluminum, R sub B 90 1018 steel projectiles and icy meteoroids onto 2024-T3 aluminum plates at impact velocities from 0 to 16 km/s. PEN4 determines whether a plate is perforated by calculating the state of fragmentation of projectile and first plate. Depth of penetration into the second to n sup th plate by fragments resulting from first plate perforation is determined by multiple cratering. The results from applications are given
Critical review of Ames Life Science participation in Spacelab Mission Development Test 3: The SMD 3 management study
A management study was conducted to specify activities and problems encountered during the development of procedures for documentation and crew training on experiments, as well as during the design, integration, and delivery of a life sciences experiment payload to Johnson Space Center for a 7 day simulation of a Spacelab mission. Conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future Ames' life sciences projects are included. Broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the environment of space are also addressed
Planning and managing future space facility projects
To learn how ground-based personnel of a space project plan and organize their work and how such planning and organizing relate to work outcomes, longitudinal study of the management and execution of the Space Lab Mission Development Test 3 (SMD 3) was performed at NASA Ames Research Center. A view of the problems likely to arise in organizations and some methods of coping with these problems are presented as well as the conclusions and recommendations that pertain strictly to SMD 3 management. Emphasis is placed on the broader context of future space facility projects and additional problems that may be anticipated. A model of management that may be used to facilitate problem solving and communication - management by objectives (MBO) is presented. Some problems of communication and emotion management that MBO does not address directly are considered. Models for promoting mature, constructive and satisfying emotional relationships among group members are discussed
A critical review of the life sciences project management at Ames Research Center for the Spacelab Mission development test 3
A management study was initiated by ARC (Ames Research Center) to specify Spacelab Mission Development Test 3 activities and problems. This report documents the problems encountered and provides conclusions and recommendations to project management for current and future ARC life sciences projects. An executive summary of the conclusions and recommendations is provided. The report also addresses broader issues relevant to the conduct of future scientific missions under the constraints imposed by the space environment
Electronic structure of superposition states in flux qubits
Flux qubits, small superconducting loops interrupted by Josephson junctions,
are successful realizations of quantum coherence for macroscopic variables.
Superconductivity in these loops is carried by --
electrons, which has been interpreted as suggesting that coherent
superpositions of such current states are macroscopic superpositions analogous
to Schr\"odinger's cat. We provide a full microscopic analysis of such qubits,
from which the macroscopic quantum description can be derived. This reveals
that the number of microscopic constituents participating in superposition
states for experimentally accessible flux qubits is surprisingly but not
trivially small. The combination of this relatively small size with large
differences between macroscopic observables in the two branches is seen to
result from the Fermi statistics of the electrons and the large disparity
between the values of superfluid and Fermi velocity in these systems.Comment: Minor cosmetic changes. Published version
Decoherence of Flux Qubits Coupled to Electronic Circuits
On the way to solid-state quantum computing, overcoming decoherence is the
central issue. In this contribution, we discuss the modeling of decoherence of
a superonducting flux qubit coupled to dissipative electronic circuitry. We
discuss its impact on single qubit decoherence rates and on the performance of
two-qubit gates. These results can be used for designing decoherence-optimal
setups.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Advances in Solid State Physics,
