    P2X receptors: epithelial ion channels and regulators of salt and water transport.

    When the results from electrophysiological studies of renal epithelial cells are combined with data from in vivo tubule microperfusion experiments and immunohistochemical surveys of the nephron, the accumulated evidence suggests that ATP-gated ion channels, P2X receptors, play a specialized role in the regulation of ion and water movement across the renal tubule and are integral to electrolyte and fluid homeostasis. In this short review, we discuss the concept of P2X receptors as regulators of salt and water salvage pathways, as well as acknowledging their accepted role as ATP-gated ion channels

    Dominance Based Crossover Operator for Evolutionary Multi-objective Algorithms

    In spite of the recent quick growth of the Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization (EMO) research field, there has been few trials to adapt the general variation operators to the particular context of the quest for the Pareto-optimal set. The only exceptions are some mating restrictions that take in account the distance between the potential mates - but contradictory conclusions have been reported. This paper introduces a particular mating restriction for Evolutionary Multi-objective Algorithms, based on the Pareto dominance relation: the partner of a non-dominated individual will be preferably chosen among the individuals of the population that it dominates. Coupled with the BLX crossover operator, two different ways of generating offspring are proposed. This recombination scheme is validated within the well-known NSGA-II framework on three bi-objective benchmark problems and one real-world bi-objective constrained optimization problem. An acceleration of the progress of the population toward the Pareto set is observed on all problems

    Non-Gaussian Velocity Distribution Function in a Vibrating Granular Bed

    The simulation of granular particles in a quasi two-dimensional container under the vertical vibration as an experimental accessible model for granular gases is performed. The velocity distribution function obeys an exponential-like function during the vibration and deviates from the exponential function in free-cooling states. It is confirmed that this exponential-like distribution function is produced by Coulomb's friction force.     Colossal Magnetoresistance in the Mn2+ Oxypnictides NdMnAsO1-xFx

    Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) is a rare phenomenon in which the electronic resistivity of a material can be decreased by orders of magnitude upon application of a magnetic field. Such an effect could be the basis of the next generation of magnetic memory devices. Here we report CMR in the antiferromagnetic oxypnictide NdMnAsO1-xFx as a result of competition between an antiferromagnetic insulating phase with strong electron correlations and a paramagnetic semiconductor upon application of a magnetic field. The discovery of CMR in antiferromagnetic Mn2+ oxypnictide materials could open up an array of materials for further investigation and optimisation for technological applications

    Mental Health of Parents and Life Satisfaction of Children: A Within-Family Analysis of Intergenerational Transmission of Well-Being

    This paper addresses the extent to which there is an intergenerational transmission of mental health and subjective well-being within families. Specifically it asks whether parents’ own mental distress influences their child’s life satisfaction, and vice versa. Whilst the evidence on daily contagion of stress and strain between members of the same family is substantial, the evidence on the transmission between parental distress and children’s well-being over a longer period of time is sparse. We tested this idea by examining the within-family transmission of mental distress from parent to child’s life satisfaction, and vice versa, using rich longitudinal data on 1,175 British youths. Results show that parental distress at year t-1 is an important determinant of child’s life satisfaction in the current year. This is true for boys and girls, although boys do not appear to be affected by maternal distress levels. The results also indicated that the child’s own life satisfaction is related with their father’s distress levels in the following year, regardless of the gender of the child. Finally, we examined whether the underlying transmission correlation is due to shared social environment, empathic reactions, or transmission via parent-child interaction

    Tracer diffusion in granular shear flows

    Tracer diffusion in a granular gas in simple shear flow is analyzed. The analysis is made from a perturbation solution of the Boltzmann kinetic equation through first order in the gradient of the mole fraction of tracer particles. The reference state (zeroth-order approximation) corresponds to a Sonine solution of the Boltzmann equation, which holds for arbitrary values of the restitution coefficients. Due to the anisotropy induced in the system by the shear flow, the mass flux defines a diffusion tensor DijD_{ij} instead of a scalar diffusion coefficient. The elements of this tensor are given in terms of the restitution coefficients and mass and size ratios. The dependence of the diffusion tensor on the parameters of the problem is illustrated in the three-dimensional case. The results show that the influence of dissipation on the elements DijD_{ij} is in general quite important, even for moderate values of the restitution coefficients. In the case of self-diffusion (mechanically equivalent particles), the trends observed in recent molecular dynamics simulations are similar to those obtained here from the Boltzmann kinetic theory.Comment: 5 figure

    The Chronus Quantum software package

    The Chronus Quantum (ChronusQ) software package is an open source (under the GNU General Public License v2) software infrastructure which targets the solution of challenging problems that arise in ab initio electronic structure theory. Special emphasis is placed on the consistent treatment of time dependence and spin in the electronic wave function, as well as the inclusion of relativistic effects in said treatments. In addition, ChronusQ provides support for the inclusion of uniform finite magnetic fields as external perturbations through the use of gauge-including atomic orbitals. ChronusQ is a parallel electronic structure code written in modern C++ which utilizes both message passing implementation and shared memory (OpenMP) parallelism. In addition to the examination of the current state of code base itself, a discussion regarding ongoing developments and developer contributions will also be provided.
