Sequential ejectile decays and uncorrelated breakup processes in the 14N + 159Tb reaction
From a study of particle-particle correlations, involving position-sensitive detector telescopes, conclusive evidence for sequential ejectile decay was found, and the relative importance of sequential decay and of breakup processes, which were observed to be uncorrelated in angle, could be determined
Views and experiences of managing eczema:systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative studies*
Background: The number of qualitative studies on eczema has increased rapidly in recent years. Systematically reviewing these can provide greater understandings of people’s perceptions of eczema and eczema treatments. Objectives: We sought to systematically review and thematically synthesize qualitative studies exploring views and experiences of people with eczema and parents/carers of children with eczema. Methods: We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO and CINAHL from the earliest date available to February 2019. We selected papers focusing on views and experiences of eczema and eczema treatments, and barriers/facilitators to eczema self-management. We excluded papers focusing on health service provision models or health professionals’ views. Results: We synthesized 39 papers (reporting 32 studies) from 13 countries. We developed four analytical themes: (1) Eczema not viewed as a long-term condition; (2) Significant psychosocial impact not acknowledged by others; (3) Hesitancy (patient/carer uncertainty) about eczema treatments; and (4) Insufficient information and advice. Our findings suggest that people with eczema and their carers experience frustration at having to manage a condition that is often seen by others as mundane but has significant psychosocial impact and is difficult to manage due to concerns about, and burden of, treatment. This frustration can be exacerbated by experiences of conflicting and/or insufficient information and advice from health professionals, family and others. Conclusions: Effective self-management of eczema could be supported by addressing beliefs and concerns about treatments; seeking positive ways to promote a ‘control not cure’ message; acknowledging psychosocial impacts of eczema and treatment burden; and providing clear consistent advice or signposting towards reliable information.</p
Freeze-out configuration properties in the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV
Data from the experiment on the 197Au + 197Au reaction at 23 AMeV are
analyzed with an aim to find signatures of exotic nuclear configurations such
as toroid-shaped objects. The experimental data are compared with predictions
of the ETNA code dedicated to look for such configurations and with the QMD
model. A novel criterion of selecting events possibly resulting from the
formation of exotic freeze-out configurations, "the efficiency factor", is
tested. Comparison between experimental data and model predictions may indicate
for the formation of flat/toroidal nuclear systems
The systematic study of the influence of neutron excess on the fusion cross sections using different proximity-type potentials
Using different types of proximity potentials, we have examined the trend of
variations of barrier characteristics (barrier height and its position) as well
as fusion cross sections for 50 isotopic systems including various collisions
of C, O, Mg, Si, S, Ca, Ar, Ti and Ni nuclei with condition
for compound systems. The results of our studies reveal that the relationships
between increase of barrier positions and decrease of barrier heights are both
linear with increase of ratio. Moreover, fusion cross sections also
enhance linearly with increase of this ratio.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, 5 Table
Automated track recognition and event reconstruction in nuclear emulsion
The major advantages of nuclear emulsion for detecting charged particles are its submicron position resolution and sensitivity to minimum ionizing particles. These must be balanced, however, against the difficult manual microscope measurement by skilled observers required for the analysis. We have developed an automated system to acquire and analyze the microscope images from emulsion chambers. Each emulsion plate is analyzed independently, allowing coincidence techniques to be used in order to reject background and estimate error rates. The system has been used to analyze a sample of high-multiplicity Pb-Pb interactions (charged particle multiplicities ∼1100) produced by the 158 GeV/c per nucleon 208Pb beam at CERN. Automatically measured events agree with our best manual measurements on 97% of all the tracks. We describe the image analysis and track reconstruction techniques, and discuss the measurement and reconstruction uncertainties
Searching for New Physics Through AMO Precision Measurements
We briefly review recent experiments in atomic, molecular, and optical
physics using precision measurements to search for physics beyond the Standard
Model. We consider three main categories of experiments: searches for changes
in fundamental constants, measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the
electron, and searches for an electric dipole moment of the electron.Comment: Prepared for Comments on AMO Physics at Physica Script
Maternal diet-induced obesity during pregnancy alters lipid supply to mouse E18.5 fetuses and changes the cardiac tissue lipidome in a sex- dependent manner
Maternal obesity during pregnancy has immediate and long-term detrimental effects on the offspring heart. In this study, we characterized the cardiac and circulatory lipid profiles in late gestation E18.5 fetuses of diet-induced obese pregnant mice and established the changes in lipid abundance and fetal cardiac transcriptomics. We used untargeted and targeted lipidomics and transcriptomics to define changes in the serum and cardiac lipid composition and fatty acid metabolism in male and female fetuses. From these analyses we observed: (1) maternal obesity affects the maternal and fetal serum lipidome distinctly; (2) female fetal heart lipidomes are more sensitive to maternal obesity than males; (3) changes in lipid supply might contribute to early expression of lipolytic genes in mouse hearts exposed to maternal obesity. These results highlight the existence of sexually dimorphic responses of the fetal heart to the same in utero obesogenic environment and identify lipids species that might mediate programming of cardiovascular health.MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit [MRC_MC_UU_00014/4]

Charged particle production in the Pb+Pb system at 158 GeV/c per nucleon
Charged particle multiplicities from high multiplicity central interactions
of 158 GeV/nucleon Pb ions with Pb target nuclei have been measured in the
central and far forward projectile spectator regions using emulsion chambers.
Multiplicities are significantly lower than predicted by Monte Carlo
simulations. We examine the shape of the pseudorapidity distribution and its
dependence on centrality in detail.Comment: 17 pages text plus 12 figures in postscript 12/23/99 -- Add TeX
