    Pulsed Laser Cooling for Cavity-Optomechanical Resonators

    A pulsed cooling scheme for optomechanical systems is presented that is capable of cooling at much faster rates, shorter overall cooling times, and for a wider set of experimental scenarios than is possible by conventional methods. The proposed scheme can be implemented for both strongly and weakly coupled optomechanical systems in both weakly and highly dissipative cavities. We study analytically its underlying working mechanism, which is based on interferometric control of optomechanical interactions, and we demonstrate its efficiency with pulse sequences that are obtained by using methods from optimal control. The short time in which our scheme approaches the optomechanical ground state allows for a significant relaxation of current experimental constraints. Finally, the framework presented here can be used to create a rich variety of optomechanical interactions and hence offers a novel, readily available toolbox for fast optomechanical quantum control.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Enhanced light emission from top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes by optimizing surface plasmon polariton losses

    We demonstrate enhanced light extraction for monochrome top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The enhancement by a factor of 1.2 compared to a reference sample is caused by the use of a hole transport layer (HTL) material possessing a low refractive index (1.52). The low refractive index reduces the in-plane wave vector of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excited at the interface between the bottom opaque metallic electrode (anode) and the HTL. The shift of the SPP dispersion relation decreases the power dissipated into lost evanescent excitations and thus increases the outcoupling efficiency, although the SPP remains constant in intensity. The proposed method is suitable for emitter materials owning isotropic orientation of the transition dipole moments as well as anisotropic, preferentially horizontal orientation, resulting in comparable enhancement factors. Furthermore, for sufficiently low refractive indices of the HTL material, the SPP can be modeled as a propagating plane wave within other organic materials in the optical microcavity. Thus, by applying further extraction methods, such as micro lenses or Bragg gratings, it would become feasible to obtain even higher enhancements of the light extraction.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, will be submitted to PR

    Capsule Endoscopy in Patients with Cardiac Pacemakers and Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators: (Re)evaluation of the Current State in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland 2010

    Background and Aims. The study was a repeated evaluation of the experience of capsule endoscopy (CE) in patients with cardiac pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Patients and Methods. A standardized questionnaire was sent by the manufactors Given Imaging and Olympus to all centers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland providing capsule endoscopy service. The questionnaire covers the number of examined patients, monitoring during CE, check of the electric implants before and after CE, occurrence of arrhythmia, quality of CE video, complications, indication of CE, and type of institution. Results. Overall 580 questionnaires were sent to the users. 26/5% (Germany/Austria + Switzerland) of the questionnaires were sent back anonymously to the authors. 114 centers (82 hospitals, 11 surgeries, 21 without specification) replied. In 58 centers (51%), patients with cardiac pacemaker (n = 300) and ICDs (n = 80) underwent uneventful capsule endoscopy. The predominant indication (patients with CP 97%, patients with ICD 100%) was mid gastrointestinal bleeding. Conclusion. The results of our inquiry show that in spite of formal contraindication CE is increasingly applied in bleeding patients with cardiac pacemakers/ICDs and seems to be safe even in a large cohort

    Capsule Endoscopy in Patients with Cardiac Pacemakers, Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators, and Left Heart Devices: A Review of the Current Literature

    Background and Study Aims. Capsule endoscopy is an established tool for investigation of the small intestine. Because of limited clinical experience in patients with cardiac devices, the Food and Drug Administration and the manufacturer recommended not to use capsule endoscopy in these patients. The vast majority of investigations did not reveal any interference between capsule endoscopy and cardiac devices. Methods. Studies investigating interference between CE and cardiac devices were analysed. For the review we considered studies published in English or German and indexed in Medline, as well as highly relevant abstracts. Results. In vitro and in vivo studies mainly revealed no interference between capsule endoscopy and cardiac devices. Technical data of capsule endoscopy (Given Imaging) reveal that interference with cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillator is impossible. Telemetry can interfere with CE video. Conclusion. The clinical use of capsule endoscopy (Given Imaging) is unproblematic in patients with cardiac pacemakers

    ApoE polymorphisms in narcolepsy

    BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a common neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by increased daytime sleepiness, cataplexy and hypnagogic hallucinations. Deficiency of the hypocretin neurotransmitter system was shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of narcolepsy in animals and men. There are several hints that neurodegeneration of hypocretin producing neurons in the hypothalamus is the pathological correlate of narcolepsy. The ApoE4 allele is a major contributing factor to early-onset neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer disease and other neurodegenerative diseases as well. METHODS: To clarify whether the ApoE4 phenotype predisposes to narcolepsy or associates with an earlier disease onset, we have genotyped the ApoE gene in 103 patients with narcolepsy and 101 healthy controls. RESULTS: The frequency of the E4 allele of the ApoE gene was 11% in the patient and 15% in the control groups. Furthermore, the mean age of onset did not differ between the ApoE4(+) and ApoE4(-) patient groups. CONCLUSION: Our results exclude the ApoE4 allele as a major risk factor for narcolepsy

    Biodegradable inkjet-printed electrochromic display for sustainable short-lifecycle electronics

    The fabrication of electronics on the basis of biofriendly materials aims to counterbalance the negative trends conveyed by the short life-cycle of electronics. Furthermore, these materials open the possibility to develop optoelectronic technologies which will be in contact with the human body. In this work, we present an electrochromic display fabricated by resource- and energy-efficient digital printing techniques. The biodegradation of the device is certified under the ISO 14855 standard. The display comprises of a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) electrochromic layer, a gelatin-based electrolyte and Au electrodes deposited on a cellulose di-acetate substrate. We investigate the impact of various naturally sourced ionic species on the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte and the figures of merit of the display. The printed devices show an electrochromic contrast of 32 Ā± 4% and switching times of 3.0 Ā± 1.4 s, comparable to the spincoated reference devices. The utilization of inkjet printing enables the fabrication of different device designs with individually addressable pixels. The display can be worn innocuously on the skin without loss of performance thanks to the self-adhesion properties of the gelatin hydrogel. The present work highlights the use of industrial relevant technology for the fabrication of truly ecofriendly optoelectronic systems

    Registration of supine MR mammography with breast ultrasound for surgical planning of breast conserving surgery: a feasibility study

    Purpose To report the feasibility, accuracy and initial clinical experience of the use of real-time magnetic resonance navigated ultrasound (rtMRnUS) in the surgical planning of breast-conserving surgery (BCS) via guide wire insertion. Materials and Methods 29 participants were recruited into this prospective ethics committee approved study. The first 4 cases were utilized as a training set. Participants underwent a supine contrast-enhanced breast MR examination with external fiducials and corresponding ink marks placed on the skin of the affected breast to act as co-registration pairs. MR examinations included both functional and morphological images. A LOGIQ E9 ultrasound system (GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI, USA) equipped with a 6 - 15 MHz transducer was utilized for rtMRnUS. To facilitate point co-registration of the previously acquired MR dataset with the real-time ultrasound, co-registration pairs were identified on both imaging modalities. The following co-registration quality metrics were recorded: root mean square deviation (RMSD), lesion and global accuracies. Post co-registration guide wire insertion was performed. Results Co-registration was successfully undertaken in all participants. Results from 25 participants are presented. The median (min, max) RMSD was 3.3 mm (0.6 mm, 8.8 mm). The global accuracy was assessed as very good (8), good (12), moderate (3) and poor (2) while the median (min, max) lesion accuracy was recorded at 8.9 mm (2.1 mm, 33.2 mm). Conclusion The use of rtMRnUS to facilitate guide wire insertion is a feasible technique. Generally, very good or good global registration can be expected. Lesion accuracy results indicate that a median difference, in 3 D space, of 9 mm can be expected between imaging modalities

    The Effects of Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (Cape) on Oxidative Stress and Hypoxia

    Oxidative stress has been implicated in pathogenesis of hypoxia and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. In previous studies, we have shown that the antioxidant CAPE exerted cardioprotection in an isolated rat heart I (30 min)/R (60 min) injury model. In this study, we further evaluated the effects of CAPE on oxidative stress and hypoxia-induced cell damage. We evaluated the inhibition of absorbance in the phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (30 nM) induced superoxide production spectrophotometrically in isolated rat neutrophils via reduction of exogenous cytochrome C. We found that CAPE (0.5 ĀµM- 40 ĀµM; n=4-13) reduced phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate induced neutrophil superoxide release dose-dependently from 29Ā±3% to 95Ā±2%. In a rat hind limb I (30 min)/R (60 min) model, blood hydrogen peroxide levels serves as an indicator of blood oxidative stress and was measured in real-time via a hydrogen peroxide microsensor (100 Ī¼m) inserted into both femoral veins (one served as sham, the other as I/R). We found that in the control group, I/R significantly increased blood hydrogen peroxide levels to 2.1Ā±0.8 Ī¼M relative to the sham limb at 60 minutes reperfusion when saline was given at the beginning of reperfusion (n=5).
