Beyond the binary collision approximation for the large-qq response of liquid 4^4He

We discuss corrections to the linear response of a many-body system beyond the binary collision approximation. We first derive for smooth pair interactions an exact expression of the response ∝1/q2\propto 1/q^2, considerably simplifying existing forms and present also the generalization for interactions with a strong, short-range repulsion. We then apply the latter to the case of liquid 4^4He. We display the numerical influence of the 1/q21/q^2 correction around the quasi-elastic peak and in the low-intensity wings of the response, far from that peak. Finally we resolve an apparent contradiction in previous discussions around the fourth order cumulant expansion coefficient. Our results prove that the large-qq response of liquid 4^4He can be accurately understood on the basis of a dynamical theory.Comment: 19 p. Figs. available on reques

Purpose:Despite recent advances in the molecular characterization of gliomas, it remains unclear which patients benefit most from which second-line treatments. The TAVAREC trial was a randomized, open-label phase II trial assessing the benefit of the addition of the angiogenesis inhibitor bevacizumab to treatment with temozolomide in patients with a first enhancing recurrence of World Health Organization grade 2 or 3 glioma without 1p/19q codeletion. We evaluated the prognostic significance of genome-wide DNA methylation profiles and copy-number variations on the TAVAREC trial samples.Experimental Design:Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation status was determined via Sanger sequencing and IHC. DNA methylation analysis was performed using the MethylationEPIC BeadChip (Illumina) from which 1p/19q codeletion, MGMT promoter methylation (MGMT-STP27), and homozygous deletion of CDKN2A/B were determined. DNA methylation classes were determined according to classifiers developed in Heidelberg and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA; “Heidelberg” and “TCGA” classifier respectively). Results:DNA methylation profiles of 122 samples were successfully determined. As expected, most samples were IDH-mutant (89/122) and MGMT promotor methylated (89/122). Methylation classes were prognostic for time to progression. However, Heidelberg methylation classes determined at time of diagnosis were no longer prognostic following enhancing recurrence of the tumor. In contrast, TCGA methylation classes of primary samples remained prognostic also following enhancing recurrence. Homozygous deletions in CDKN2A/B were found in 10 of 87 IDH-mutated samples and were prognostically unfavorable at recurrence. Conclusions:DNA methylome Heidelberg classification at time of diagnosis is no longer of prognostic value at the time of enhancing recurrence. CDKN2A/B deletion status was predictive of survival from progression of IDH-mutated tumors.Neurolog

Electrokinetic transport of PAH-degrading bacteria in model aquifers and soil.

An investigation of the mobility, viability, and activity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) degrading bacteria in an electric field is presented. Bench-scale model aquifers were used to test electrophoresis and electroosmosis as potential mechanisms for bacterial dispersion in contaminated sites. Glass beads, alluvial sand from Lake Geneva, and historically polluted clayey soil were used as packing materials. The green-fluorescent protein labeled PAH-degrading bacteria Sphingomonas sp. L138 and Mycobacterium frederiksbergense LB501TG were used as test organisms because of the known differing physicochemical surface and adhesion properties of the corresponding wild-type strains. No adverse effects of the electric current on bacterial viability and PAH-degradation were observed in the system chosen. Up to 90% of the weakly negatively charged and moderately adhesive cells of strain L138 were transported by electroosmosis, whereas 0-20% were transported by electrophoresis. By contrast, poor electrokinetic transport of strongly charged and highly adhesive cells of M. frederiksbergense LB501TG occurred in the different model aquifers. Treatment of bacteria with the nonionic surfactant Brij35 resulted in up to 80% enhanced electrokinetic dispersion of both strains. Our findings demonstrate that electroosmosis may be a valuable mechanism to transport bacteria in the subsurface with transport efficiencies heavily depending on the retention of the bacteria by the solid phase.
</p
