Music is theatre: devising musical performance

    Get PDF
This portfolio comprises twelve pieces that blend music, theatre and movement, working predominantly with instrumentalists and solely in acoustic performance. The defining principle of the portfolio is that music is theatre: music is as much a visual as it is an aural art. The theatre of music – musical gestures, the musician’s body, and musical performance contexts – is treated as compositional material. The portfolio demonstrates a development from a compositional to a collaborative devising process practice that incorporates techniques from contemporary theatre, dance and performance art. This approach advocates the use of workshop activities focused on enabling musicians to develop movement material. In collaborations with musicians, dancers and performance artists, the role of the composer was merged with that of a director, dramaturg, performer and choreographer. Several site-specific and participatory works also concern the role of the audience

    On Density-Critical Matroids

    Get PDF
For a matroid MM having mm rank-one flats, the density d(M)d(M) is mr(M)\tfrac{m}{r(M)} unless m=0m = 0, in which case d(M)=0d(M)= 0. A matroid is density-critical if all of its proper minors of non-zero rank have lower density. By a 1965 theorem of Edmonds, a matroid that is minor-minimal among simple matroids that cannot be covered by kk independent sets is density-critical. It is straightforward to show that U1,k+1U_{1,k+1} is the only minor-minimal loopless matroid with no covering by kk independent sets. We prove that there are exactly ten minor-minimal simple obstructions to a matroid being able to be covered by two independent sets. These ten matroids are precisely the density-critical matroids MM such that d(M)>2d(M) > 2 but d(N)≤2d(N) \le 2 for all proper minors NN of MM. All density-critical matroids of density less than 22 are series-parallel networks. For k≥2k \ge 2, although finding all density-critical matroids of density at most kk does not seem straightforward, we do solve this problem for k=94k=\tfrac{9}{4}.Comment: 16 page

FLORIDA PANTHER AND BLACK BEAR: A ROAD AND URBAN AVOIDANCE/UTILIZATION ANALYSIS AND IMPACTS OF LAND USE AND CLIMATE CHANGE ON LARGE CARNIVORE HABITAT IN FLORIDA

    Get PDF
Florida is expanding its urban borders into areas of the native habitat. Increased expansion is predicted through the next several decades. Several sections of the state are home to large carnivores, such as Florida panther and black bear, which are important to ecosystem function. Expansion of roads and urban centers will greatly reduce the quality and quantity of carnivore habitat. In this study, I used Euclidean distance analyses and very high frequency (VHF) telemetry points to produce distance categories in which carnivores either have a negative/neutral/positive association with roads and urban centers. The seven black bear populations followed four different trends: 1) Slight avoidance of roads and urban centers, 2) strong avoidance of roads and urban centers, 3) neutrality toward roads and urban centers, and 3) one population with a positive association of roads. Florida panther showed strong avoidance to roads and urban centers. Finally I modeled Florida panther and black bear habitat using Maximum Entropy Species Distribution software and placed future urban expansion and sea level incursions associated with climate change over the habitat to find high priority conservation areas

Comparison and Contrast of Eastern and Western Christian Civilizations, 325-1669, through an Examination of two Contemporary Fourteenth Century Representations in the Mariological Cycle

This paper will examine the similarities and differences between Eastern and Western Christian civilizations, 325-1669, through the examination of two contemporary early fourteenth century interpretations of an episode in the infancy and betrothal narratives of the Mariological cycle. It will use the whole images and details of Giotto\u27s The Betrothal of the Virgin in the Arena Chapel and The Virgin is Entrusted to Joseph in the narthex of Chora Church as lenses to reveal certain characteristics of Eastern and Western societies and the differences between them
