Dynamic and Thermodynamic Stability and Negative Modes in Schwarzschild-Anti-de Sitter
The thermodynamic properties of Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter black holes
confined within finite isothermal cavities are examined. In contrast to the
Schwarzschild case, the infinite cavity limit may be taken which, if suitably
stated, remains double valued. This allows the correspondence between
non-existence of negative modes for classical solutions and local thermodynamic
stability of the equilibrium configuration of such solutions to be shown in a
well defined manner. This is not possible in the asymptotically flat case.
Furthermore, the non-existence of negative modes for the larger black hole
solution in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter provides strong evidence in favour of
the recent positive energy conjecture by Horowitz and Myers.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, LaTe
A focus of attention algorithm for expert systems
This research is primarily concerned with increasing the performance of expert systems. A refined focus of attention strategy and its affect on performance are discussed. Early expert systems used a brute force approach to process the knowledge base. Each production rule in the knowledge base was evaluated each cycle. More recently, processing efficiency has been increased by focusing the attention of the inference engine on a subset of the rules by filtering for further testing, only rules that could possibly fire given the current content of the context base. Focus of attention as developed in this research increases performance over filtering systems by further narrowing the focus of attention of the inference engine, down to the subexpression level. Combination of temperature-compensated logarithmic amplifiers and p-i-n photodiodes operating in zero-bias mode provides lightweight radiometer for detecting spectral intensities encompassing more than three decades over a range of at least 300 to 800 nanometers at low power levels
Satisficers and Maximizers: A Preliminary Examination of Maximization Tendencies and Slot-Machine Gambling
The present experiment investigated the relationship between maximization, or the extent to which time and effort are spent comparing options before making a choice, and the frequency of switching among concurrently available slot machines. Fourteen adults completed the Maximization Scale and were divided into groups according to maximization tendency, and then gambled hypothetical credits on slot machines of their choice. Across three phases, either 3, 6, or 14 slot machines were available to play. Results suggest those scoring as maximizers switched among available slot machines significantly more than those scoring as satisficers, and that switching among alternatives may be a behavioral correlate of maximization in a gambling context. Implications for pathological gambling and future directions are discussed
Thermodynamics of Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes in the grand canonical ensemble
The thermodynamical properties of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om-anti-de Sitter
black hole in the grand canonical ensemble are investigated using York's
formalism. The black hole is enclosed in a cavity with finite radius where the
temperature and electrostatic potential are fixed. The boundary conditions
allow us to compute the relevant thermodynamical quantities, e.g. thermal
energy, entropy and charge. The stability conditions imply that there are
thermodynamically stable black hole solutions, under certain conditions.

Black hole puncture initial data with realistic gravitational wave content
We present improved post-Newtonian-inspired initial data for non-spinning
black-hole binaries, suitable for numerical evolution with punctures. We
revisit the work of Tichy et al. [W. Tichy, B. Bruegmann, M. Campanelli, and P.
Diener, Phys. Rev. D 67, 064008 (2003)], explicitly calculating the remaining
integral terms. These terms improve accuracy in the far zone and, for the first
time, include realistic gravitational waves in the initial data. We investigate
the behavior of these data both at the center of mass and in the far zone,
demonstrating agreement of the transverse-traceless parts of the new metric
with quadrupole-approximation waveforms. These data can be used for numerical
evolutions, enabling a direct connection between the merger waveforms and the

Further Observational Evidence for a Critical Ionising Luminosity in Active Galaxies
We report the results of a survey for HI 21-cm absorption at redshifts of z >
2.6 in a new sample of radio sources with the Green Bank and Giant Metrewave
Radio Telescopes. From a total of 25 targets, we report zero detections in the
16 for which optical depth limits could be obtained. Based upon the detection
rate for z > 0.1 associated absorption, we would expect approximately four
detections. Of the 11 which have previously not been searched, there is
sufficient source-frame optical/ultra-violet photometry to determine the
ionising photon rate for four. Adding these to the literature, the hypothesis
that there is a critical rate of logQ = 56 ionising photons per second is now
significant at ~7 sigma. This reaffirms our assertion that searching z > 3
active galaxies for which optical redshifts are available selects sources in
which the ultra-violet luminosity is sufficient to ionise all of the neutral
gas in the host galaxy.Comment: Accepted by MNRA
A Preliminary Investigation of Relational Network Influence on Horse-Track Betting
Adult gamblers completed a task that assessed !preference among eight horses during a computerized pari-mutuel horse racing game. During Experiment 1, assessments of bet allocation were conducted before and after temporal and visual discrimination !training procedures where 3 three-member stimulus classes were established. Experiment 2 controlled for participant reinforcement histories by blocking the results of each horse race. Results indicated that some participants tended increase responding toward specific horses that shared similar formal properties to those stimuli used in visual discrimination training even !though such features !had no !bearing !on !race !!outcomes
