Increasing the response of PIN photodiodes to the ultraviolet

    Get PDF
Solid state device uses sapphire windows and avoids coatings which absorb ultraviolet radiation and ultimately alter detector geometry. Ultimate solution for ultraviolet response is geometry with maximum peripheral area and horizontal field structure to draw out photon induced current carriers

Band structure of W and Mo by empirical pseudopotential method

    Get PDF
The empirical pseudopotential method (EPM) is used to calculate the band structure of tungsten and molybdenum. Agreement between the calculated reflectivity, density of states, density of states at the Fermi surface and location of the Fermi surface from this study and experimental measurements and previous calculations is good. Also the charge distribution shows the proper topological distribution of charge for a bcc crystal

A computer program for a line-by-line calculation of spectra from diatomic molecules and atoms assuming a Voight line profile

    Get PDF
Computer program predicts the spectra resulting from electronic transitions of diatomic molecules and atoms in local thermodynamic equilibrium. The program produces a spectrum by accounting for the contribution of each rotational and atomic line considered

Horace Mann: A comparison of a traditional and a revisionist biography

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to compare a traditional biography, Burke A. Hinsdale\u27s Horace Mann and the Common School Revival in the United States (1900), and a revisionist biography, Jonathan Messerli\u27s Horace Mann: a Biography (1972), within a neutral frame of reference to determine which author made the more logical use of evidence to support his argument.;David H. Fischer\u27s Historians\u27 Fallacies (1970) and Richard E. Neustadt & Ernest R. May\u27s Thinking in Time (1986) were used to formulate a neutral frame of reference within which to analyze the two biographies.;Hinsdale\u27s explanation was found to consist of a series of generalizations few of which were supported by credible relevant evidence. Thus, while Messerli\u27s explanation in part relied on the assumption that such evidence as has survived is adequate to justify using psychological and sociological theory to explain the formation of Mann\u27s personality, his explanation otherwise generally uses credible relevant evidence to support the generalizations he makes. Therefore, it was concluded that Messerli made the more logical use of evidence to support his argument.;Since making generalizations about the traditional and the revisionist genres based on a single sample of each is tenuous, additional studies are needed to justify extending the conclusions of this study to the genres

Finite Element Flow Simulations of the EUROLIFT DLR-F11 High Lift Configuration

This paper presents flow simulation results of the EUROLIFT DLR-F11 multi-element wing configuration, obtained with a highly scalable finite element solver, PHASTA. This work was accomplished as a part of the 2nd high lift prediction workshop. In-house meshes were constructed with increasing mesh density for analysis. A solution adaptive approach was used as an alternative and its effectiveness was studied by comparing its results with the ones obtained with other meshes. Comparisons between the numerical solution obtained with unsteady RANS turbulence model and available experimental results are provided for verification and discussion. Based on the observations, future direction for adaptive research and simulations with higher fidelity turbulence models is outlined.Comment: 52nd Aerospace Sciences Meetin

    A new solid-state logarithmic radiometer

    Get PDF
Combination of temperature-compensated logarithmic amplifiers and p-i-n photodiodes operating in zero-bias mode provides lightweight radiometer for detecting spectral intensities encompassing more than three decades over a range of at least 300 to 800 nanometers at low power levels

A fourth HI 21-cm absorption system in the sight-line of MG J0414+0534: a record for intervening absorbers

We report the detection of a strong HI 21-cm absorption system at z=0.5344, as well as a candidate system at z=0.3389, in the sight-line towards the z=2.64 quasar MG J0414+0534. This, in addition to the absorption at the host redshift and the other two intervening absorbers, takes the total to four (possibly five). The previous maximum number of 21-cm absorbers detected along a single sight-line is two and so we suspect that this number of gas-rich absorbers is in some way related to the very red colour of the background source. Despite this, no molecular gas (through OH absorption) has yet been detected at any of the 21-cm redshifts, although, from the population of 21-cm absorbers as a whole, there is evidence for a weak correlation between the atomic line strength and the optical--near-infrared colour. In either case, the fact that so many gas-rich galaxies (likely to be damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems) have been found along a single sight-line towards a highly obscured source may have far reaching implications for the population of faint galaxies not detected in optical surveys, a possibility which could be addressed through future wide-field absorption line surveys with the Square Kilometre Array.Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letter

Universality of Load Balancing Schemes on Diffusion Scale

We consider a system of NN parallel queues with identical exponential service rates and a single dispatcher where tasks arrive as a Poisson process. When a task arrives, the dispatcher always assigns it to an idle server, if there is any, and to a server with the shortest queue among dd randomly selected servers otherwise (1≤d≤N)(1 \leq d \leq N). This load balancing scheme subsumes the so-called Join-the-Idle Queue (JIQ) policy (d=1)(d = 1) and the celebrated Join-the-Shortest Queue (JSQ) policy (d=N)(d = N) as two crucial special cases. We develop a stochastic coupling construction to obtain the diffusion limit of the queue process in the Halfin-Whitt heavy-traffic regime, and establish that it does not depend on the value of dd, implying that assigning tasks to idle servers is sufficient for diffusion level optimality
