This article explores the sociocultural meanings attached to sexual behaviors and conceptions of masculinity among low-income African-American males. The author argues that HIV/AIDS prevention programs should incorporate strategies to help this population achieve a more healthy gender identity

Rigorous upper limits on the vertical heat transport in two dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection between stress-free isothermal boundaries are derived from the Boussinesq approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations. The Nusselt number Nu is bounded in terms of the Rayleigh number Ra according to $Nu \leq 0.2295 Ra^{5/12}$ uniformly in the Prandtl number Pr. This Nusselt number scaling challenges some theoretical arguments regarding the asymptotic high Rayleigh number heat transport by turbulent convection.Comment: 4 page

Polarization perception device

A polarization perception device comprises a base and a polarizing filter having opposite broad sides and a centerline perpendicular thereto. The filter is mounted on the base for relative rotation and with a major portion of the area of the filter substantially unobstructed on either side. A motor on the base automatically moves the filter angularly about its centerline at a speed slow enough to permit changes in light transmission by virtue of such movement to be perceived as light-dark pulses by a human observer, but fast enough so that the light phase of each such pulse occurs prior to fading of the light phase image of the preceding pulse from the observer's retina. In addition to an observer viewing a scene in real time through the filter while it is so angularly moved, or instead of such observation, the scene can be photographed, filmed or taped by a camera whose lens is positioned behind the filter

Manned simulations of the SRMS in SIMFAC

SIMFAC is a general purpose real-time simulation facility currently configured with an Orbiter-like Crew Compartment and a Displays and Controls (D and C) Subsystem to support the engineering developments of the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator (SRMS). The simulation consists of a software model of the anthropomorphic SRMS manipulator arm including the characteristics of its control system and joint drive modules. The following are discussed: (1) simulation and scene generation subsystems; (2) the SRMS task in SIMFAC; (3) operator tactics and options; (4) workload; (5) operator errors and sources; (6) areas for further work; and (7) general observations

Incarcerated Women as Facilitators: A Preliminary Review of Motivations and Skill Development in Group Leadership Settings

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world with about 500 prisoners per 100,000 residents (Tsai & Scommegna, 2012). There are currently about 7 million offenders under the supervision of the adult correctional systems in the U.S. There are numerous statistics demonstrating the growth and scope of women in prison. The rate of increase has been about twice that of their male counterparts. The number of incarcerated woman has jumped a shocking 757 percent since 1977 (Talvi, 2007, p.3). As a result of these growing inmate populations there has been an increased focus on the topic of rehabilitative programming and impacting recidivism rates. Violence, violence prevention and conflict resolution skills in correctional facilities should be of concern considering prisons are simply microcosms concentrated with the troubles of society. Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) has been working to reduce violence in prisons since 1975 and has now spread to over 50 countries in prisons, schools, communities and business settings (avpusa.org). One aspect which makes AVP distinctive from other conflict resolution and anger programs is that is facilitated by non-professionals, trained inmates and community volunteers. Conflict resolution training, while limited, serves as a topic of great value in the process of developing skills that incarcerated individuals can use upon release. The purpose of this round table is to discuss the reported motivations and skill development of 22 incarcerated women who serve as inside facilitators for AVP in a South Florida prison. This preliminary data will contribute to a phenomenological study which will examine the lived experiences of incarcerated facilitators of AVP and explore their experiences, feelings and beliefs of their roles, as well as views on their impact on those they train
