    Automated Diagnosis of Clinic Workflows

    Outpatient clinics often run behind schedule due to patients who arrive late or appointments that run longer than expected. We sought to develop a generalizable method that would allow healthcare providers to diagnose problems in workflow that disrupt the schedule on any given provider clinic day. We use a constraint optimization problem to identify the least number of appointment modifications that make the rest of the schedule run on-time. We apply this method to an outpatient clinic at Vanderbilt. For patient seen in this clinic between March 27, 2017 and April 21, 2017, long cycle times tended to affect the overall schedule more than late patients. Results from this workflow diagnosis method could be used to inform interventions to help clinics run smoothly, thus decreasing patient wait times and increasing provider utilization

    The dependence of the pairwise velocity dispersion on galaxy properties

    (abridged) We present measurements of the pairwise velocity dispersion (PVD) for different classes of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For a sample of about 200,000 galaxies, we study the dependence of the PVD on galaxy properties such as luminosity, stellar mass (M_*), colour (g-r), 4000A break strength (D4000), concentration index (C), and stellar surface mass density (\mu_*). The luminosity dependence of the PVD is in good agreement with the results of Jing & B\"orner (2004) for the 2dFGRS catalog. The value of \sigma_{12} measured at k=1 h/Mpc decreases as a function of increasing galaxy luminosity for galaxies fainter than L*, before increasing again for the most luminous galaxies in our sample. Each of the galaxy subsamples selected according to luminosity or stellar mass is divided into two further subsamples according to colour, D4000, C and \mu_*. We find that galaxies with redder colours and higher D4000, C, and \mu_* values have larger PVDs on all scales and at all luminosities/stellar masses. The dependence of the PVD on parameters related to recent star formation(colour, D4000) is stronger than on parameters related to galaxy structure (C, \mu_*), especially on small scales and for faint galaxies. The reddest galaxies and galaxies with high surface mass densities and intermediate concentrations have the highest pairwise peculiar velocities, i.e. these move in the strongest gravitational fields. We conclude that the faint red population located in rich clusters is responsible for the high PVD values that are measured for low-luminosity galaxies on small scales.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures; reference updated and text slightly changed to match the published version; data of measurements of power spectrum and PVD available at http://www.mpa-garching.mpg.de/~leech/papers/clustering

    US Manufacturing and Vertical/Horizontal Intra-Industry Trade: Examining the Smooth Adjustment Hypothesis

    Using data that represent the six-digit North American Industrial Classification System-classified industries that comprise the US manufacturing sector and that span the years 1989–2005, we test the validity of the smooth adjustment hypothesis (SAH). To our knowledge, this is the first examination of the SAH for the USA. The results of our empirical analysis are consistent with the confirmation of the SAH. Further, using measures of vertical marginal intra-industry trade and of horizontal marginal intra-industry trade, we find that the latter has a stronger effect on employment of production workers than does the former. The findings suggest that for total industry-level employment and for industry-level production worker employment, intra-industry trade expansion inherently involves lower adjustment costs as compared to interindustry trade expansion

    Measurement of the transverse spatial quantum state of light at the single-photon level

    We present an experimental method to measure the transverse spatial quantum state of an optical field in coordinate space at the single-photon level. The continuous-variable measurements are made with a photon-counting, parity-inverting Sagnac interferometer based on all-reflecting optics. The technique provides a large numerical aperture without distorting the shape of the wave front, does not introduce astigmatism, and allows for characterization of fully or partially coherent optical fields at the single-photon level. Measurements of the transverse spatial Wigner functions for highly attenuated coherent beams are presented and compared to theoretical predictions.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure

    Low-Cost Rural Surface Alternatives: Demonstration Project

    The goals of this project were to implement several stabilization methods for preventing or mitigating freeze-thaw damage to granular surfaced roads and identify the most effective and economical methods for the soil and climate conditions of Iowa. Several methods and technologies identified as potentially suitable for Iowa were selected from an extensive analysis of existing literature provided with Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) Project TR-632. Using the selected methods, demonstration sections were constructed in Hamilton County on a heavily traveled two-mile section of granular surfaced road that required frequent maintenance during previous thawing periods. Construction procedures and costs of the demonstration sections were documented, and subsequent maintenance requirements were tabulated through two seasonal freeze-thaw periods. Extensive laboratory and field tests were performed prior to construction, as well as before and after the two seasonal freeze-thaw periods, to monitor the performance of the demonstration sections. A weather station was installed at the project site and temperature sensors were embedded in the subgrade to monitor ground temperatures up to a depth of 5 ft and determine the duration and depths of ground freezing and thawing. An economic analysis was performed using the documented construction and maintenance costs, and the estimated cumulative costs per square yard were projected over a 20-year timeframe to determine break-even periods relative to the cost of continuing current maintenance practices. Overall, the sections with biaxial geogrid or macadam base courses had the best observed freeze-thaw performance in this study. These two stabilization methods have larger initial costs and longer break-even periods than aggregate columns, but counties should also weigh the benefits of improved ride quality and savings that these solutions can provide as excellent foundations for future paving or surface upgrades

    Advanced photonic routing sub-systems with efficient routing control

    In recent years, there has been much interest in the development of optical switches which can route optical signals from different input guides to different outputs based on thermo-optic and electro-optic technologies. Such switches, which can be reconfigured on millisecond and microsecond timescales, have already attracted commercial interest. However switches which are able to reconfigure on the nanosecond timescales required for packet switching have been more challenging and only in recent years, have router concepts been devised to allow lossless routers to be constructed able to switch on nanosecond timescales with more than 16Ă—16 ports.
