Numerical Latent Heat Observation of the q=5 Potts Model

Site energy of the five-state ferromagnetic Potts model is numerically calculated at the first-order transition temperature using corner transfer matrix renormalization group (CTMRG) method. The calculated energy of the disordered phase U+U^{+} is clearly different from that of the ordered phase UU^{-}. The obtained latent heat L=UU+L = U^{-} - U^{+} is 0.027, which quantitatively agrees with the exact solution.Comment: 2 pages, Latex(JPSJ style files are included), 2 ps figures, submitted to J. Gamma rays of 0.3 to 30 MeV from PSR 0531+21

Pulsed gamma rays from the Crab Pulsar PSR 0531+21 are reported for energies of 0.3 to 30 MeV. The observations were carried out with the UCR gamma ray double Compton scatter telescope launched on a balloon from Palestine, Texas at 4.5 GV, at 2200 LT, September 29, 1978. Two 8 hr observations of the pulsar were made, the first starting at 0700 UT (0200 LT) September 30 just after reaching float altitude of 4.5 g/sq cm. Analysis of the total gamma ray flux from the Crab Nebula plus pulsar using telescope vertical cell pairs was published previously. The results presented supersede the preliminary ones. The double scatter mode of the UCR telescope measures the energy of each incident gamma ray from 1 to 30 MeV and its incident angle to a ring on the sky. The time of arrival is measured to 0.05 ms. The direction of the source is obtained from overlapping rings on the sky. The count rate of the first scatter above a threshold of 0.3 MeV is recorded every 5.12 ms. The Crab Pulsar parameters were determined from six topocentric arrival times of optical pulses

Evaluating implicit feedback models using searcher simulations

In this article we describe an evaluation of relevance feedback (RF) algorithms using searcher simulations. Since these algorithms select additional terms for query modification based on inferences made from searcher interaction, not on relevance information searchers explicitly provide (as in traditional RF), we refer to them as implicit feedback models. We introduce six different models that base their decisions on the interactions of searchers and use different approaches to rank query modification terms. The aim of this article is to determine which of these models should be used to assist searchers in the systems we develop. To evaluate these models we used searcher simulations that afforded us more control over the experimental conditions than experiments with human subjects and allowed complex interaction to be modeled without the need for costly human experimentation. The simulation-based evaluation methodology measures how well the models learn the distribution of terms across relevant documents (i.e., learn what information is relevant) and how well they improve search effectiveness (i.e., create effective search queries). Our findings show that an implicit feedback model based on Jeffrey's rule of conditioning outperformed other models under investigation

We describe the operation and tolerances of a non-deterministic, coincidence basis, quantum CNOT gate for photonic qubits. It is constructed solely from linear optical elements and requires only a two-photon source for its demonstration.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review

On the Computation of Power in Volume Integral Equation Formulations

We present simple and stable formulas for computing power (including absorbed/radiated, scattered and extinction power) in current-based volume integral equation formulations. The proposed formulas are given in terms of vector-matrix-vector products of quantities found solely in the associated linear system. In addition to their efficiency, the derived expressions can guarantee the positivity of the computed power. We also discuss the application of Poynting's theorem for the case of sources immersed in dissipative materials. The formulas are validated against results obtained both with analytical and numerical methods for scattering and radiation benchmark cases

Measured performance of the new University of California gamma ray telescope

The design of the new medium energy balloon-borne gamma ray telescope is discussed. This telescope is sensitive to 1-30 MeV gamma rays. The results of the initial calibration are described. The position and energy resolutions of 32 plastic and NaI(Tl) scintillator bars, each 100 cm long are discussed. The telescope's measured angular and energy resolutions as a function of incident angle are compared with detailed Monte Carlo calculations at 1.37, 2.75 and 6.13 MeV. The expected resolutions are 5 deg FHWM and 8% at 2.75 MeV. The expected area-efficiency is 250 cm

Systematic study of d-wave superconductivity in the 2D repulsive Hubbard model

The cluster size dependence of superconductivity in the conventional two-dimensional Hubbard model, commonly believed to describe high-temperature superconductors, is systematically studied using the Dynamical Cluster Approximation and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations as cluster solver. Due to the non-locality of the d-wave superconducting order parameter, the results on small clusters show large size and geometry effects. In large enough clusters, the results are independent of the cluster size and display a finite temperature instability to d-wave superconductivity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; updated with version published in PRL; added values of Tc obtained from fit

    Finite-Field Ground State of the S=1 Antiferromagnetic-Ferromagnetic Bond-Alternating Chain

We investigate the finite-field ground state of the S=1 antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic bond-alternating chain described by the Hamiltonian {\calH}=\sum\nolimits_{\ell}\bigl\{\vecS_{2\ell-1}\cdot\vecS_{2\ell} +J\vecS_{2\ell}\cdot\vecS_{2\ell+1}\bigr\} +D\sum\nolimits_{\ell} \bigl(S_{\ell}^z)^2 -H\textstyle\sum\nolimits_\ell S_\ell^z, where \hbox{J0J\leq0} and \hbox{<D<-\infty<D<\infty}. We find that two kinds of magnetization plateaux at a half of the saturation magnetization, the 1/2-plateaux, appear in the ground-state magnetization curve; one of them is of the Haldane type and the other is of the large-DD-type. We determine the 1/2-plateau phase diagram on the DD versus JJ plane, applying the twisted-boundary-condition level spectroscopy methods developed by Kitazawa and Nomura. We also calculate the ground-state magnetization curves and the magnetization phase diagrams by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method

Energetic Materials at High Compression: First-Principles Density Functional Theory and Reactive Force Field Studies

We report the results of a comparative study of pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) at high compression using classical reactive interatomic potential ReaxFF and first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Lattice parameters of PETN I, the ground state structure at ambient conditions, is obtained by ReaxFF and two different density functional methods (plane wave and LCAO pseudopotential methods) and compared with experiment. Calculated energetics and isothermal equation of state (EOS) upon hydrostatic compression obtained by DFT and ReaxFF are both in good agreement with available experimental data. Our calculations of the hydrostatic EOS at zero temperature are extended to high pressures up to 50 GPa. The anisotropic characteristics of PETN upon uniaxial compression were also calculated by both ReaxFF and DFT
