Submicron active-passive integration for InP-based membranes on silicon
The high vertical index contrast and the small thickness of thin InP-based membrane structures bonded with BCB on Silicon allow the realization of very small devices. To make photonic integrated circuits with both passive and active components in these membranes, active-passive integration on a small scale is essential. In this paper we will present our results on sub-micrometer active areas for membrane applications

Pairing in Cu-O Models: Clues of Joint Electron-Phonon and Electron-Electron Interactions
We discuss a many-electron Hamiltonian with Hubbard-like repulsive
interaction and linear coupling to the phonon branches, having the Cu-O plane
of the superconducting cuprates as a paradigm. A canonical transformation
extracts an effective two-body problem from the many-body theory. As a
prototype system we study the \cu cluster, which yields electronic pairing in
the Hubbard model; moreover, a standard treatment of the Jahn-Teller effect
predicts distortions that destroy electronic pairing. Remarkably, calculations
that keep all the electronic spectrum into account show that vibrations are
likely to be synergic with electronic pairing, if the coupling to
half-breathing modes predominates, as experiments suggest.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev.
Towards the architecture of an instructional multimedia database
The applicability of multimedia databases in education may be extended if they can serve multiple target groups, leading to affordable costs per unit for the user. In this contribution, an approach is described to build generic multimedia databases to serve that purpose. This approach is elaborated within the ODB Project ('Instructional Design of an Optical DataBase'); the term optical refers to the use of optical storage media to hold the audiovisual components. The project aims at developing a database in which a hypermedia encyclopedia is combined with instructional multimedia applications for different target groups at different educational levels. The architecture of the Optical Database will allow for switching between application types while working (for instance from tutorial instruction via the encyclopedia to a simulation and back). For instruction, the content of the database is thereby organized around so-called standard instruction routes: one route per target group. In the project, the teacher is regarded as the manager of instruction.\ud

From that perspective, the database is primarily organized as a teaching facility. Central to the research is the condition that the architecture of the Optical Database has to enable teachers to select and tailor instruction routes to their needs in a way that is perceived as logical and easy to use

Development of the SF-6Dv2 health utility survey : comprehensibility and patient preference
Background
The SF-6Dv2 classification system assesses health states in six domains—physical functioning, role function, bodily pain, vitality, social functioning, and mental health. Scores have previously been derived from the SF-36v2® Health Survey. We aimed to develop a six-item stand-alone SF-6Dv2 Health Utility Survey (SF-6Dv2 HUS) and evaluate its comprehensibility.
Methods
Two forms of a stand-alone SF-6Dv2 HUS were developed for evaluation. Form A had 6 questions with 5–6 response choices, while Form B used 6 headings and 5–6 statements describing the health levels within each domain. The two forms were evaluated by 40 participants, recruited from the general population. Participants were randomized to debrief one form of the stand-alone SF-6Dv2 HUS during a 75-min interview, using think-aloud techniques followed by an interviewer-led detailed review. Participants then reviewed the other form of SF-6Dv2 and determined which they preferred. Any issues or confusion with items was recorded, as was as overall preference. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and NVivo Software (v12).
Results
Participants were able to easily complete both forms. Participant feedback supported the comprehensibility of the SF-6Dv2 HUS. When comparing forms, 25/40 participants preferred Form A, finding it clearer and easier to answer when presented in question/response format. The numbered questions and underlining of key words in Form A fostered quick and easy comprehension and completion of the survey. However, despite an overall preference for Form A, almost half of participants (n = 19) preferred the physical functioning item in Form B, with more descriptive response choices.
Conclusion
The results support using Form A, with modifications to the physical functioning item, as the stand-alone SF-6Dv2 HUS. The stand-alone SF-6Dv2 HUS is brief, easy to administer, and comprehensible to the general population

Magnetic polarons in weakly doped high-Tc superconductors
We consider a spin Hamiltonian describing - exchange interactions
between localized spins of a finite antiferromagnet as well as -
interactions between a conducting hole () and localized spins. The spin
Hamiltonian is solved numerically with use of Lanczos method of
diagonalization. We conclude that - exchange interaction leads to
localization of magnetic polarons. Quantum fluctuations of the antiferromagnet
strengthen this effect and make the formation of polarons localized in one site
possible even for weak - coupling. Total energy calculations, including
the kinetic energy, do not change essentially the phase diagram of magnetic
polarons formation. For parameters reasonable for high- superconductors
either a polaron localized on one lattice cell or a small ferron can form. For
reasonable values of the dielectric function and - coupling, the
contributions of magnetic and phonon terms in the formation of a polaron in
weakly doped high- materials are comparable.Comment: revised, revtex-4, 12 pages 8 eps figure
Effects of Acrylic Restorations on the Periodontium of Monkeys
Replanted teeth that had an acrylic restoration in the middle third of their roots were studied from three days to six months after grafting. The study revealed that the acrylic obturator elicited epithelial proliferation, fibrous encapsulation, moderate chronic inflammation, and adjacent alveolar bone loss.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/68162/2/10.1177_00220345720510052201.pd
Systematic Cu-63 NQR studies of the stripe phase in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) for 0.07 <= x <= 0.25
We demonstrate that the integrated intensity of Cu-63 nuclear quadrupole
resonance (NQR) in La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) decreases dramatically below the
charge-stripe ordering temperature T(charge). Comparison with neutron and X-ray
scattering indicates that the wipeout fraction F(T) (i.e. the missing fraction
of the integrated intensity of the NQR signal) represents the charge-stripe
order parameter. The systematic study reveals bulk charge-stripe order
throughout the superconducting region 0.07 <= x <= 0.25. As a function of the
reduced temperature t = T/T(charge), the temperature dependence of F(t) is
sharpest for the hole concentration x=1/8, indicating that x=1/8 is the optimum
concentration for stripe formation.Comment: 10 pages of text and captions, 11 figures in postscript. Final
