Visualising uncertainty: examining women's views on the role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in late pregnancy
Prenatal screening occupies a prominent role within sociological debates on medical uncertainty. A particular issue concerns the limitations of routine screening which tends to be based on risk prediction. Computer assisted visual technologies such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are now starting to be applied to the prenatal realm to assist in the diagnosis of a range of fetal and maternal disorders (from problems with the fetal brain to the placenta). MRI is often perceived in popular and medical discourse as a technology of certainty and truth. However, little is known about the use of MRI as a tool to confirm or refute the diagnosis of a range of disorders in pregnancy. Drawing on qualitative research with pregnant women attending a fetal medicine clinic in the North of England this paper examines the potential role that MRI can play in mediating pregnancy uncertainty. The paper will argue that MRI can create and manage women's feelings of uncertainty during pregnancy. However, while MRI may not always provide women with unequivocal answers, the detailed information provided by MR images combined with the interpretation and communication skills of the radiologist in many ways enables women to navigate the issue. Our analysis of empirical data therefore highlights the value of this novel technological application for women and their partners. Progression and assessment in foreign languages at Key Stage 2
The teaching of primary languages has been increasing steadily, in response to the future entitlement for all Key Stage 2 (KS2) pupils aged 7-11 to learn a foreign language by 2010. However, there remain concerns about progression both within KS2 and through to secondary school and about how learners' progress is assessed. This paper presents findings on the issues of progression and assessment taken from case studies which formed part of a project funded by the then Department for Education and Skills (DfES), now the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). This project set out to evaluate 19 local authority (LA) Pathfinders in England that were piloting the introduction of foreign language learning at KS2 between 2003 and 2005. Findings revealed that there was inconsistency between schools, even within each LA Pathfinder, in the use of schemes of work and that assessment was generally underdeveloped in the majority of the Pathfinders. In order to set these findings in context, this paper examines the issues of progression and assessment in foreign language learning in England. Finally, it investigates the challenges English primary schools face in terms of progression and assessment in the light of the new entitlement and discusses implications for the future. Managing progression, both within KS2 and through to secondary school at KS3 (ages 11-14), is one of the key factors in determining the overall success of starting languages in primary school
High purity nanoparticles exceed stoichiometry limits in rebox chemistry: the nano way to cleaner water
A potentially cheaper and more effective way of cleaning wastewater has been discovered by scientists
at Nazarbayev University and the University of Brighton researching nanotechnology [1]. It is well
established that when particles are reduced to the nanoscale unexpected effects occur. Silver, for example,
interacts with mercury ions in a fixed ratio of atoms (stoichiometry), typically 2:1, which presents a limit
that has never been exceeded. In this project we used an alternative chemical procedure based on modified
quartz sand to immobilise silver nanoparticles (NPs) with control over their size. We found that when the
size of the silver NPs decreased below 35 nm the amount of mercury ions reacting with silver increased
beyond the long-held limit and rose to a maximum of 1:1.2 for 10 nm sized silver
Electronic Spectroscopy of He@C60+ for Astrochemical Consideration
The electronic spectrum of the endohedral fullerene He@C+60 observed by messenger spectroscopy in a cryogenic ion trap is presented. The role played by the messanger tag in the adopted experimental method is evaluated by recording spectra of He@C+60 − Hen with n = 1−4. The results indicate a linear shift of ∼ 0.7 Å in the wavelengths allowing accurate gas phase values to be reported. The presence of the helium inside the cage shifts the absorption bands by 2−3 Å toward shorter wavelengths compared to C+60. The magnitude of this displacement will enable searches for the spectral signatures of this fullerene analogue in interstellar environments by absorption spectroscopy. The implications for potential astronomical detection are discussed

Interfacial colloidal assembly guided by optical tweezers and tuned via surface charge
Hypothesis: The size, shape and dynamics of assemblies of colloidal particles optically-trapped at an air–water interface can be tuned by controlling the optical potential, particle concentration, surface charge density and wettability of the particles and the surface tension of the solution. Experiments: The assembly dynamics of different colloidal particle types (silica, polystyrene and carboxyl coated polystyrene particles) at an air–water interface in an optical potential were systematically explored allowing the effect of surface charge on assembly dynamics to be investigated. Additionally, the pH of the solutions were varied in order to modulate surface charge in a controllable fashion. The effect of surface tension on these assemblies was also explored by reducing the surface tension of the supporting solution by mixing ethanol with water. Findings: Silica, polystyrene and carboxyl coated polystyrene particles showed distinct assembly behaviours at the air–water interface that could be rationalised taking into account changes in surface charge (which in addition to being different between the particles could be modified systematically by changing the solution pH). Additionally, this is the first report showing that wettability of the colloidal particles and the surface tension of the solution are critical in determining the resulting assembly at the solution surface. © 2022 The Author(s
Methods for identifying surgical wound infection after discharge from hospital: a systematic review.
Background: Wound infections are a common complication of surgery that add significantly to the morbidity of patients and costs of treatment. The global trend towards reducing length of hospital stay post-surgery and the increase in day case surgery means that surgical site infections (SSI) will increasingly occur after hospital discharge. Surveillance of SSIs is important because rates of SSI are viewed as a measure of hospital performance, however accurate detection of SSIs post-hospital discharge is not straightforward. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of methods of post discharge surveillance for surgical wound infection and undertook a national audit of methods of post-discharge surveillance for surgical site infection currently used within United Kingdom NHS Trusts. Results: Seven reports of six comparative studies which examined the validity of post-discharge surveillance methods were located; these involved different comparisons and some had methodological limitations, making it difficult to identify an optimal method. Several studies evaluated automated screening of electronic records and found this to be a useful strategy for the identification of SSIs that occurred post discharge. The audit identified a wide range of relevant post-discharge surveillance programmes in England, Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland; however, these programmes used varying approaches for which there is little supporting evidence of validity and/or reliability. Conclusion: In order to establish robust methods of surveillance for those surgical site infections that occur post discharge, there is a need to develop a method of case ascertainment that is valid and reliable post discharge. Existing research has not identified a valid and reliable method. A standardised definition of wound infection ( e. g. that of the Centres for Disease Control) should be used as a basis for developing a feasible, valid and reliable approach to defining post discharge SSI. At a local level, the method used to ascertain post discharge SSI will depend upon the purpose of the surveillance, the nature of available routine data and the resources available
