Tracking scholarly output and cultivating information about a researcher's work is made possible with online scholarly profile tools. As the most widely accepted unique identifier for authors, ORCiD IDs are increasingly required for: paper submissions to journals, grant submissions, and various NIH research training and career development awards. Attendees participated in hands on activities to set up profiles, and discover more information about tracking their impact going forward, and utilize existing connections between different scholarly profile tools.     The Changing Landscape of Scholarly Publishing: Will Radiation Research Survive?

    As a society published journal, Radiation Research has been a successful and enduring project of the Radiation Research Society (RRS). In 59 years of publication, the journal has produced 732 issues and 10,712 articles. As a nonprofit organization, RRS, like most societies, has used revenues from subscriptions to support, in part, the life of the organization (meetings, conferences and grants to new scholars). The model for scientific publishing, however, continues to evolve. Radiation Research has weathered the rise of electronic publishing, consolidation in the commercial publishing industry, the aggregation of library subscriptions and library subscription cuts. Recent years have seen dramatic changes in how scholarly publishing is financed and new funder and institution policies will accelerate these changes. The growth of open access to journal articles reflects the information habits of readers and facilitates the dissemination of new knowledge. The Radiation Research Society, however, will need to account for and adapt to changes in the publishing market if it intends to support the communication of peer reviewed scholarship in the future

    Getting off obesity island: how informationists can enhance clinical decision support

    Clinical decision support (CDS) will play a key role in improving the health of patients; informationists can support the development of CDS systems by indexing rule libraries and mapping the system logic. This work can help rule developers make more informed choices and understand how rules are related conceptually and operationally. With a map, rules can be written to bridge isolated concepts (islands) and rules that are no longer needed can be weeded. Here we explore the added value that informationists bring to projects by reporting on the role of informationists working on a pediatric CDS

    Linking Health Information Technology to Patient Safety and Quality Outcomes: A Bibliometric Analysis and Review

Publisher's version can be found at: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/17538157.2012.678451OBJECTIVE: To assess the scholarly output of grants funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) that published knowledge relevant to the impact of health information technologies on patient safety and quality of care outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: We performed a bibliometric analysis of the identified scholarly articles, their journals, and citations. In addition, we performed a qualitative review of the full-text articles and grant documents. DATA COLLECTION/EXTRACTION METHODS: Papers published by AHRQ-funded investigators were retrieved from MEDLINE, journal impact factors were extracted from the 2010 Thompson Reuters Journal Citation Report, citations were retrieved from ISI's Web of Knowledge and Google Scholar. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Seventy-two articles met the criteria for review. Most articles addressed one or more of AHRQ's outcome goals and focus priorities. The average impact factor for the journals was 4.005 (range: 0.654-28.899). The articles, and their respective grants, represented a broad range of health information technologies. CONCLUSIONS: This set of AHRQ-funded research projects addressed the goals and priorities of AHRQ, indicating notable contributions to the scientific knowledge base on the impact of information system use in healthcare.This work was supported, in part, by the National Resource Center of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, contract number 290-04-0016

    Using an Electronic Lab Notebook System to Promote Data Management Plans

    Presented at the 2019 Medical Library Association Annual Conference.Background: At an academic medical center, the rollout of an electronic lab notebook (ELN) system includes tailored support to develop functional data management plans for participating research labs. The office of research is sponsoring the adoption of the ELN and, while administrative drivers include improving lab efficiency and reducing institutional liability, the pilot primarily focuses on the benefits of ELN use. In particular, improving the collection of and access to experimental information for research projects. The creation of data management plans, in conjunction with the ELN adoption, allows participants to engage more holistically with the research processes of their laboratories. Description: Nine research labs are identified as “early adopters” for the 4-month pilot of the selected electronic lab notebook system. As participants in the pilot, these labs are expected to a) attend training on the ELN system and b) evaluate their current information and data management practices. To ensure these expectations are met, the institution's ELN implementation team meets with each lab prior to conducting the ELN training to discuss how they manage (i.e., organize, store, and share) research data. These consults result in a draft data management plan that reflect the labs’ current research data management processes and provides suggestions for potential areas of improvement/streamlining. The training on the functionality of the ELN follows this to encourage participating labs to develop concrete strategies for integrating the ELN into the research data/information management processes of the lab overall. Conclusion: As of this submission, the authors have worked directly with four of the “early adopter” labs (each with 6-10 members) to review their information and data management practices while onboarding them to the ELN. These labs receive an individualized data management plan in addition to training on the ELN. A primary outcome is to complete this process with the remaining five “early adopter” labs while gathering feedback on the ELN system itself and monitoring the adoption success of the ELN in these labs. A secondary outcome is to “scale up” this program for full rollout to the institution in 2019

View the presentation recording here: [LINK]https://purl.dlib.indiana.edu/iudl/media/s85940fh8j[/LINK]The poster will provide a roadmap of how to track and use alternative metrics (altmetrics) to provide evidence of attention or engagement of individual research outlets. Altmetrics are non-traditional metrics proposed as an alternative/complement to citation impact metrics. They provide information about the attention and influence of research of an article or publication and are based on interactions and conversations about scholarly content that occur online, mainly on social media platforms. One of the benefits of altmetrics is that they can accrue sooner than traditional metrics (citations) as they do not depend on the long process of conventional scholarly communication. Examples of altmetrics include mentions on Twitter, in news releases, in blogs, citations in policy documents, number of downloads, and more. As altmetrics are becoming more popular than ever in the evaluation of research, you can include them in your CV, grant proposal, personal website, and your promotion and tenure dossier.     Electronic Lab Notebooks in Practice

    Electronic lab notebooks (ELN ) are increasingly being adopted by research institutions to manage lab data organization, sharing, and preservation, and also for physical lab space efficiency. LabArchives, one popular ELN product, has been in use at Indiana University since 2019 and is supported by the Ruth Lilly Medical Library. To assess the impact of ELNs at IU since they have been introduced at IU, we analyzed LabArchives data monthly reports from the Spring 0f 2019-Fall 2022 using a Python script in order to develop new usage metrics to track. From these metrics, we identified recent “super users”. Then we reached out for their feedback on how ELNs are being used in practice. This feedback will inform future library training workshops and outreach to improve support for ELNs at IU

    Mapping the rules: conceptual and logical relationships in a system for pediatric clinical decision support

    The Child Health Improvement through Computer Automation (CHICA) system uses evidence-based guidelines and information collected in the clinic and stored in an electronic medical record (EMR) to inform physician and patient decision making. CHICA helps physicians to identify and select relevant screenings and also provides personalized, just-in-time information for patients. This system relies on a database of Medical Logic Modules (MLMS) written in the Arden Rules syntax. These MLMs store observations (StorObs) during the clinical encounter which trigger potential screenings and preventive health interventions for discussion with the patient or for follow up at the next visit. This poster shows how informationists worked with the CHICA team to describe the MLMs using standard vocabularies, including Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC). After assigning keywords to the database of MLMs, the informationists used visualization tools to generate maps. These maps show how rules are related by logic (shared StorObs) and by concept (shared vocabulary). The CHICA team will use these maps to identify gaps in the clinical decision support database and (if needed) to develop rules which bridge related but currently isolated concepts.NIH 1R01LM010923-0

    Promoting the work of librarians through the Academic Pediatric Association Educational Scholars Program

    Background The Academic Pediatric Association Educational Scholars Program is a 3-year national faculty development program for pediatricians. This program is designed to aid junior faculty early in their academic careers, with each scholar creating and completing a scholarly project to build their skills and a niche in educational scholarship and leadership. In 2014, a medical librarian and two pediatric educators collaborated to conceive, create and design a new module centering on the topic of literature searching. The module provides the junior faculty scholars with fundamental skills to conduct their projects. Description As an entrée into understanding the place of a project in the literature, the module authors created a new rubric to evaluate the quality of a manuscript’s introduction, background, and reference sections. The authors created and narrated six narrated videos: 1) Turning Your Research Question/Project into Concepts, 2) Controlled Vocabulary, 3) Keyword Searching (MESH), 4) Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria, 5) Medical Education Databases and 6) Getting to the Full Text. After viewing the videos and completing a consultation worksheet, participants scheduled a meeting with their local medical librarian for further help with the development of their project. Next, participants viewed three videos focused on understanding the impact of their scholarly work (Impact Factors, H-Index and Citation Counts, Altmetrics, and Educational scholarship and promotion). Finally, scholars performed a guided reflective critique of their scholarship moving forward. Conclusion Currently, three cohorts of junior faculty scholars have completed the course. The rubric aided participants to be objective when evaluating papers and provides a tool for use in future manuscript evaluations. While the videos provided context and content, the scholars repeatedly mentioned the most valuable part of this module being the actual meeting with their local medical librarian. The librarian taught the junior faculty about specific databases and nuances of searching, making writing an introduction more manageable. Several participants now consider their librarians as part of “their team” and are working for future collaborations in publishing together
