    La morfologia verbal del "Llibre dels feits" en el context de l’evolució de la llengua [Verb morphology in the "Llibre dels feits" in the context of the evolution of Catalan]

    El text del Llibre dels fets manifesta un alt grau de variació morfològica (com ho fan molts altres textos medievals). Prenem aquesta variació com a punt de partida per explorar fenòmens d’interès en l’evolució de la morfologia verbal que hem observat a través del corpus CICA, oferint alguna interpretació de les freqüències relatives en el LF. També prenem en consideració elements de variació entre el manuscrit més antic H (1343) i el segon ms. del segle XV, el ms. C (1380). Els temes investigats són: 1. afixos innovats: el passat perfectiu en -r-, el passat perfectiu perifràstic, la desinència de la segona persona del plural en l’indicatiu i subjuntiu (-ts ~ -u), i en l’imperatiu (-t ~ -ts); 2. els radicals velaritzats (a) en el «morfoma L» (1SG del present d’indicatiu més tot el present de subjuntiu), i (b) en el «morfoma PiTA» (‘pretèrit i temps afins’); 3. altres canvis en el «morfoma PiTA»: el reemplaçament de les formes «fortes» (rizotòniques)per les «febles» (arrizotòniques), i el retrocés dels radicals terminats en sibilant; 4. futur i condicional: (a) formes sincopades en la conjugació III (p.e. partrà), (b) futur i condicional partit (conseylar-vos-hia) en contra del model amb clítics posposats (conseylaria-vos); 5. infinitiu: retrocés de -er tònic, i trasllat de conjugació II a II

    Apparent wave function collapse caused by scattering

    Some experimental implications of the recent progress on wave function collapse are calculated. Exact results are derived for the center-of-mass wave function collapse caused by random scatterings and applied to a range of specific examples. The results show that recently proposed experiments to measure the GRW effect are likely to fail, since the effect of naturally occurring scatterings is of the same form as the GRW effect but generally much stronger. The same goes for attempts to measure the collapse caused by quantum gravity as suggested by Hawking and others. The results also indicate that macroscopic systems tend to be found in states with (Delta-x)(Delta-p) = hbar/sqrt(2), but microscopic systems in highly tiltedly squeezed states with (Delta-x)(Delta-p) >> hbar.Comment: Final published version. 20 pages, Plain TeX, no figures.     Does the universe in fact contain almost no information?

    At first sight, an accurate description of the state of the universe appears to require a mind-bogglingly large and perhaps even infinite amount of information, even if we restrict our attention to a small subsystem such as a rabbit. In this paper, it is suggested that most of this information is merely apparent, as seen from our subjective viewpoints, and that the algorithmic information content of the universe as a whole is close to zero. It is argued that if the Schr\"odinger equation is universally valid, then decoherence together with the standard chaotic behavior of certain non-linear systems will make the universe appear extremely complex to any self-aware subsets that happen to inhabit it now, even if it was in a quite simple state shortly after the big bang. For instance, gravitational instability would amplify the microscopic primordial density fluctuations that are required by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle into quite macroscopic inhomogeneities, forcing the current wavefunction of the universe to contain such Byzantine superpositions as our planet being in many macroscopically different places at once. Since decoherence bars us from experiencing more than one macroscopic reality, we would see seemingly complex constellations of stars etc, even if the initial wavefunction of the universe was perfectly homogeneous and isotropic.Comment: 17 pages, LATeX, no figures.     Gravitational Waves from Gravitational Collapse

    Gravitational wave emission from the gravitational collapse of massive stars has been studied for more than three decades. Current state of the art numerical investigations of collapse include those that use progenitors with realistic angular momentum profiles, properly treat microphysics issues, account for general relativity, and examine non--axisymmetric effects in three dimensions.     Diagnostic value of Pentraxin-3 in patients with sepsis and septic shock in accordance with latest sepsis-3 definitions

    Background: Pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) is an acute-phase protein involved in inflammatory and infectious processes. This study assesses its diagnostic and prognostic value in patients with sepsis or septic shock in a medical intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: The study includes 213 ICU patients with clinical criteria of sepsis and septic shock. 77 donors served as controls. Plasma levels of PTX-3, procalcitonin (PCT) and interleukin-6 were measured on day 1, 3 and 8. Results: PTX-3 correlated with higher lactate levels as well as with APACHE II and SOFA scores (p = 0.0001). PTX-3 levels of patients with sepsis or septic shock were consistently significantly higher than in the control group (p ≤ 0.001). Plasma levels were able to discriminate sepsis and septic shock significantly on day 1, 3 and 8 (range of AUC 0.73–0.92, p = 0.0001). Uniform cut-off levels were defined at ≥5 ng/ml for at least sepsis, ≥9 ng/ml for septic shock (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: PTX-3 reveals diagnostic value for sepsis and septic shock during the first week of intensive care treatment, comparable to interleukin-6 according to latest Sepsis-3 definitions.
