Thematic mapper design parameter investigation
This study simulated the multispectral data sets to be expected from three different Thematic Mapper configurations, and the ground processing of these data sets by three different resampling techniques. The simulated data sets were then evaluated by processing them for multispectral classification, and the Thematic Mapper configuration, and resampling technique which provided the best classification accuracy were identified
Vacuum state of the quantum string without anomalies in any number of dimensions
We show that the anomalies of the Virasoro algebra are due to the asymmetric
behavior of raising and lowering operators with respect to the ground state of
the string. With the adoption of a symmetric vacuum we obtain a non-anomalous

A globally accurate theory for a class of binary mixture models
Using the self-consistent Ornstein-Zernike approximation (SCOZA) results for
the 3D Ising model, we obtain phase diagrams for binary mixtures described by
decorated models. We obtain the plait point, binodals, and closed-loop
coexistence curves for the models proposed by Widom, Clark, Neece, and Wheeler.
The results are in good agreement with series expansions and experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
Arctic marine climate of the early nineteenth century
The climate of the early nineteenth century is likely to have been significantly cooler than that of today, as it was a period of low solar activity (the Dalton minimum) and followed a series of large volcanic eruptions. Proxy reconstructions of the temperature of the period do not agree well on the size of the temperature change, so other observational records from the period are particularly valuable. Weather observations have been extracted from the reports of the noted whaling captain William Scoresby Jr., and from the records of a series of Royal Navy expeditions to the Arctic, preserved in the UK National Archives. They demonstrate that marine climate in 1810 - 1825 was marked by consistently cold summers, with abundant sea-ice. But although the period was significantly colder than the modern average, there was considerable variability: in the Greenland Sea the summers following the Tambora eruption (1816 and 1817) were noticeably warmer, and had less sea-ice coverage, than the years immediately preceding them; and the sea-ice coverage in Lancaster Sound in 1819 and 1820 was low even by modern standards. © 2010 Author(s)

The role of the cytoskeleton in biomineralisation in haptophyte algae
The production of calcium carbonate by coccolithophores (haptophytes) contributes significantly to global biogeochemical cycling. The recent identification of a silicifying haptophyte, Prymnesium neolepis, has provided new insight into the evolution of biomineralisation in this lineage. However, the cellular mechanisms of biomineralisation in both calcifying and silicifying haptophytes remain poorly understood. To look for commonalities between these two biomineralisation systems in haptophytes, we have determined the role of actin and tubulin in the formation of intracellular biomineralised scales in the coccolithophore, Coccolithus braarudii and in P. neolepis. We find that disruption of the actin network interferes with secretion of the biomineralised elements in both C. braarudii and P. neolepis. In contrast, disruption of the microtubule network does not prevent secretion of the silica scales in P. neolepis but results in production of abnormally small silica scales and also results in the increased formation of malformed coccoliths in C. braarudii. We conclude that the cytoskeleton plays a crucial role in biomineralisation in both silicifying and calcifying haptophytes. There are some important similarities in the contribution of the cytoskeleton to these different forms of biomineralisation, suggesting that common cellular mechanisms may have been recruited to perform similar roles in both lineages

Phase field modeling of electrochemistry II: Kinetics
The kinetic behavior of a phase field model of electrochemistry is explored
for advancing (electrodeposition) and receding (electrodissolution) conditions
in one dimension. We described the equilibrium behavior of this model in [J. E.
Guyer, W. J. Boettinger, J.A. Warren, and G. B. McFadden, ``Phase field
modeling of electrochemistry I: Equilibrium'', cond-mat/0308173]. We examine
the relationship between the parameters of the phase field method and the more
typical parameters of electrochemistry. We demonstrate ohmic conduction in the
electrode and ionic conduction in the electrolyte. We find that, despite making
simple, linear dynamic postulates, we obtain the nonlinear relationship between
current and overpotential predicted by the classical ``Butler-Volmer'' equation
and observed in electrochemical experiments. The charge distribution in the
interfacial double layer changes with the passage of current and, at
sufficiently high currents, we find that the diffusion limited deposition of a
more noble cation leads to alloy deposition with less noble species.Comment: v3: To be published in Phys. Rev. E v2: Attempt to work around
