Effects of Rotationally-Induced Mixing in Compact Binary Systems with Low-Mass Secondaries and in Single Solar-Type Stars
Many population synthesis and stellar evolution studies have addressed the
evolution of close binary systems in which the primary is a compact remnant and
the secondary is filling its Roche lobe, thus triggering mass transfer.
Although tidal locking is expected in such systems, most studies have neglected
the rotationally-induced mixing that may occur. Here we study the possible
effects of mixing in the mass-losing stars for a range in secondary star masses
and metallicities. We find that tidal locking can induce rotational mixing
prior to contact and thus affect the evolution of the secondary star if the
effects of the Spruit-Tayler dynamo are included both for angular momentum and
chemical transport. Once contact is made, the effect of mass transfer tends to
be more rapid than the evolutionary time scale, so the effects of mixing are no
longer directly important, but the mass transfer strips matter to inner layers
that may have been affected by the mixing. These effects are enhanced for
secondaries of 1-1.2 Msun and for lower metallicities. We discuss the possible
implications for the paucity of carbon in the secondaries of the cataclysmic
variable SS Cyg and the black hole candidate XTE J1118+480 and for the
progenitor evolution of Type Ia supernovae. We also address the issue of the
origin of blue straggler stars in globular and open clusters. We find that for
models that include rotation consistent with that observed for some blue
straggler stars, evolution is chemically homogeneous. This leads to tracks in
the HR diagram that are brighter and bluer than the non-rotating main-sequence
turn-off point. Rotational mixing could thus be one of the factors that
contribute to the formation of blue stragglers.Comment: 46 pages, 18 figure
Test results of the STI GPS time transfer receiver
Global time transfer, or synchronization, between a user clock and USNO UTC time can be performed using the Global Positioning System (GPS), and commercially available time transfer receivers. This paper presents the test results of time transfer using the GPS system and a Stanford Telecommunications, Inc. (STI) Time Transfer System (TTS) Model 502. Tests at the GPS Master Control Site (MCS) in Vandenburg, California and at the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) in Washington, D.C. are described. An overview of GPS, and the STI TTS 502 is presented. A discussion of the time transfer process and test concepts is included

Drug Predictive Cues Activate Aversion-Sensitive Striatal Neurons That Encode Drug Seeking
Drug-associated cues have profound effects on an addict’s emotional state and drug-seeking behavior. Although this influence must involve the motivational neural system that initiates and encodes the drug-seeking act, surprisingly little is known about the nature of such physiological events and their motivational consequences. Three experiments investigated the effect of a cocaine-predictive stimulus on dopamine signaling, neuronal activity, and reinstatement of cocaine seeking. In all experiments, rats were divided into two groups (paired and unpaired), and trained to self-administer cocaine in the presence of a tone that signaled the immediate availability of the drug. For rats in the paired group, self-administration sessions were preceded by a taste cue that signaled delayed drug availability. Assessments of hedonic responses indicated that this delay cue became aversive during training. Both the self-administration behavior and the immediate cue were subsequently extinguished in the absence of cocaine. After extinction of self-administration behavior, the presentation of the aversive delay cue reinstated drug seeking. In vivo electrophysiology and voltammetry recordings in the nucleus accumbens measured the neural responses to both the delay and immediate drug cues after extinction. Interestingly, the presentation of the delay cue simultaneously decreased dopamine signaling and increased excitatory encoding of the immediate cue. Most importantly, the delay cue selectively enhanced the baseline activity of neurons that would later encode drug seeking. Together these observations reveal how cocaine cues can modulate not only affective state, but also the neurochemical and downstream neurophysiological environment of striatal circuits in a manner that promotes drug seeking
