Time Machine at the LHC
Recently, black hole and brane production at CERN's Large Hadron Collider
(LHC) has been widely discussed. We suggest that there is a possibility to test
causality at the LHC. We argue that if the scale of quantum gravity is of the
order of few TeVs, proton-proton collisions at the LHC could lead to the
formation of time machines (spacetime regions with closed timelike curves)
which violate causality. One model for the time machine is a traversable
wormhole. We argue that the traversable wormhole production cross section at
the LHC is of the same order as the cross section for the black hole
production. Traversable wormholes assume violation of the null energy condition
(NEC) and an exotic matter similar to the dark energy is required. Decay of the
wormholes/time machines and signatures of time machine events at the LHC are

Phase-Field Formulation for Quantitative Modeling of Alloy Solidification
A phase-field formulation is introduced to simulate quantitatively
microstructural pattern formation in alloys. The thin-interface limit of this
formulation yields a much less stringent restriction on the choice of interface
thickness than previous formulations and permits to eliminate non-equilibrium
effects at the interface. Dendrite growth simulations with vanishing solid
diffusivity show that both the interface evolution and the solute profile in
the solid are well resolved

Quasinormal Modes, the Area Spectrum, and Black Hole Entropy
The results of canonical quantum gravity concerning geometric operators and
black hole entropy are beset by an ambiguity labelled by the Immirzi parameter.
We use a result from classical gravity concerning the quasinormal mode spectrum
of a black hole to fix this parameter in a new way. As a result we arrive at
the Bekenstein - Hawking expression of for the entropy of a black
hole and in addition see an indication that the appropriate gauge group of
quantum gravity is SO(3) and not its covering group SU(2).Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Partial domain wall partition functions
We consider six-vertex model configurations on an n-by-N lattice, n =< N,
that satisfy a variation on domain wall boundary conditions that we define and
call "partial domain wall boundary conditions". We obtain two expressions for
the corresponding "partial domain wall partition function", as an
(N-by-N)-determinant and as an (n-by-n)-determinant. The latter was first
obtained by I Kostov. We show that the two determinants are equal, as expected
from the fact that they are partition functions of the same object, that each
is a discrete KP tau-function, and, recalling that these determinants represent
tree-level structure constants in N=4 SYM, we show that introducing 1-loop
corrections, as proposed by N Gromov and P Vieira, preserves the determinant

Domain wall partition functions and KP
We observe that the partition function of the six vertex model on a finite
square lattice with domain wall boundary conditions is (a restriction of) a KP
tau function and express it as an expectation value of charged free fermions

FGF-4 signaling is involved in mir-206 expression in developing somites of chicken embryos
The microRNAs (miRNAs) are recently discovered short, noncoding RNAs, that regulate gene expression in metazoans. We have cloned short RNAs from chicken embryos and identified five new chicken miRNA genes. Genome analysis identified 17 new chicken miRNA genes based on sequence homology to previously characterized mouse miRNAs. Developmental Northern blots of chick embryos showed increased accumulation of most miRNAs analyzed from 1.5 days to 5 days except, the stem cell-specific mir-302, which was expressed at high levels at early stages and then declined. In situ analysis of mature miRNAs revealed the restricted expression of mir-124 in the central nervous system and of mir-206 in developing somites, in particular the developing myotome. In addition, we investigated how miR-206 expression is controlled during somite development using bead implants. These experiments demonstrate that fibroblast growth factor (FGF) -mediated signaling negatively regulates the initiation of mir-206 gene expression. This may be mediated through the effects of FGF on somite differentiation. These data provide the first demonstration that developmental signaling pathways affect miRNA expression. Thus far, miRNAs have not been studied extensively in chicken embryos, and our results show that this system can complement other model organisms to investigate the regulation of many other miRNAs
Pre-Maximum Spectropolarimetry of the Type Ia SN 2004dt
We report observations of SN 2004dt obtained with the Very Large Telescope of
the European Southern Observatory on August 13.30, 2004 when the supernova was
more than a week before optical maximum. SN 2004dt showed strong lines of
\ion{O}{1}, \ion{Mg}{2}, \ion{Si}{2}, and \ion{Ca}{2} with typical velocities
of absorption minimum around 17,000 \kms. The line profiles show material
moving at velocities as high as 25,000 \kms in these lines. The observations
also reveal absorption lines from \ion{S}{2} and \ion{Si}{3} with a velocity of
only 11,000 \kms. The highest velocity in the \ion{S}{2} features can be traced
no higher than 15,000 \kms, much lower than those of O, Mg, Si, and Ca. SN
2004dt has a polarization spectrum unlike any previously observed. The
variation of the polarization across some \ion{Si}{2} lines approaches 2%,
making SN 2004dt the most highly polarized SN Ia ever observed. In contrast,
the strong line of O I at 777.4 nm shows little or no polarization signature.
The degree of polarization points to a richly-structured partially burned
silicon layer with substantial departure from spherical symmetry. A geometry
that would account for the observations is one in which the distribution of
oxygen is essentially spherically symmetric, but with bubbles of
intermediate-mass elements with significant opacity within the oxygen

BLACK HOLES IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL DILATON GRAVITY THEORIES
Three dimensional black holes in a generalized dilaton gravity action theory
are analysed. The theory is specified by two fields, the dilaton and the
graviton, and two parameters, the cosmological constant and the Brans-Dicke
parameter. It contains seven different cases, of which one distinguishes as
special cases, string theory, general relativity and a theory equivalent to
four dimensional general relativity with one Killing vector. We study the
causal structure and geodesic motion of null and timelike particles in the
