A broadranging review of conflictual events in Scottish history from the late 17th to the early 20th centuries, exploring attitudes towards protest or insurrection, both on the part of the protesters and of the local and central governmental authorities, arguing for the value of interdisciplinary research on the sources, and providing references for literary students to some of the relevant historical scholarship

The Thread of Migration:A Scottish-French Linen and Jute Works and its Workers in France, c. 1845–c. 1870

After 1815, European manufacturers in several sectors sought to reap the benefits of British technical superiority through the acquisition of British machinery and workers who could operate it. France was one of the beneficiaries of this transfer process. Along with iron, engineering, and tulle making, another British industry that established a French presence was linen and jute textile manufacturing. The authors present the results of joint research carried out in Scotland and France, focusing on a spinning mill established by a Dundee-Paris partnership in Ailly-sur-Somme in 1845. Much of the technical, managerial, and worker input came from Dundee, then becoming Britain’s – and for a time, the world’s – leading coarse textile manufacturing centre: ‘Juteopolis’. But the flow of expertise was not always unidirectional and there was cultural interchange too, in a process that by the 1870s had resulted in Ailly becoming one of the most important industrial establishments in France.</jats:p

Counting the ‘Cavaliers’:Two Contemporary Analyses of the Political Wing of the Scots Jacobite Underground in the Union Parliament¹

Underground movements are understandably reluctant to record the names and numbers of their adherents because any such compilation is manifestly a hostage to fortune. Hence very few lists of politically active Jacobites actually compiled by the Jacobites themselves have survived to the present day. In the French foreign ministry archives at La Corneille, however, there is a rare and previously unknown/unused example of such a list. ‘The Rolls of Parliament as they stand’, is a classic printed, marked list of all the lords entitled to sit in, and commissioners elected to, Queen Anne's Union Parliament. It identifies the political allegiances of the great majority of the sitting commissioners and peers, and in particular the Jacobites among them. Rather better known, yet hitherto seldom consulted or used, is a debriefing document describing the political alignment of a great many of those in parliament and the general political inclination of their constituents written by Captain Harry Straton for the Jacobite King James III and VIII in August 1706. These two sources are the basis of the analysis that follows. The focus is on what these two Jacobite analyses of the state of Scotland and Scottish politics can tell us about the political dynamics of the Scottish Parliament and the country more broadly on the eve of the Union debates.</p

Rural society in Scotland from the Restoration to the Union : challenge and response in the Carse of Gowrie, circa 1660-1707

This thesis comprises a detailed investigation of the inter-relationship of society, economy and agricultural improvement in Lowland Scotland circa 1660-1707. Its purpose is the achievement of a deeper understanding of the process of modernisation in early modern rural society in a critical period research focuses on the Carse of Gowrie in east Perthshire, a progressive district in the mainstream of agriculture and rural manufacture at a time when the countryside dominated the nation's socio-economy. The evidence on which the thesis is based is drawn principally from contemporary estate papers; additional primary sources used include burgh, church, commissary court and exchequer records.A study is made of how the local economy was able to operate and develop. Population levels, structure and sustainability are assessed. A very high degree of economic energy that encompassed all sectors of rural society is revealed. A growth in the numbers and influence of the middling sorts is identified as making a significant contribution towards the erosion of traditional relationships and the founding of a more modern social and economic landscape. The nature and extent of rural trade and manufacturing is explored, together with the leading role played by the lower echelons of society in a massive expansion in the production of linen. A real increase in agricultural productivity has been found and the manner of its achievement discussed. The analysis of a series of crop returns extending from 1673 to 1695 highlights the problems faced and includes evidence of a Significant downturn in yields after 1691 that presaged the harvest failures and famine of the later 1690s. The social and economic effects of the display of their wealth and status by landowners in the modernising and beautifying of their residences together with their increasing demand for monetary income are explored.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

Non-Majority Faculty Perceptions of Diversity and Inclusion at a Predominately White and Historically Black University

In this study, we conducted survey research to examine perceptions of diversity and inclusion among majority and non-majority faculty at a Predominately White University (PWI) and a Historically Black University (HBCU), as these public institutions have distinct historical foundations regarding orientation to cultural diversity and inclusion. The study is rooted in the current national efforts to establish Inclusive Excellence (Williams et al., 2005) on university campuses. Unique in this study was an effort to examine perceptions of inclusion and diversity based on identity relative to race, gender, and sexuality given patterns historical marginalization in the context of the majority culture. T-tests and Analysis of Variance (ANOVAs) were used to determine if there are differences in faculty experiences. Results indicated significant differences between the groups and universities in perceptions and experiences of diversity and inclusion

Arbitraging a Discriminatory Labor Market: Black Workers at the Ford Motor Company, 1918–1947

The 1918-47 employee records of the Ford Motor Company provide a rare opportunity to study a firm willing to hire black workers when similar firms would not. The evidence suggests that Ford did profit from discrimination elsewhere, but not by paying blacks less than whites. An apparent &quot;wage-equity constraint&quot; prevailed, resulting in virtually no racial variation in wages inside Ford. An implication was that blacks quit Ford jobs less often than whites, holding working conditions constant. Arbitrage profit came from exploiting this nonwage margin, as Ford placed blacks in hot, dangerous foundry jobs where quit rates were generally high

Pretreatment of mixed softwoods with SO2 impregnation and steam for production of ethanol has been investigated. The optimal conditions, both for sugar yield and ethanol yield, to assess the effect of inhibitors formed in the pretreatment, have been determined. The parameters investigated were: SO2 concentration (1-6% (w/w) dry matter), temperature (190-230 degrees C) and residence time (2-15 min). After pretreatment, the material was separated into a solid residue and a filtrate. The solid residue was enzymatically hydrolysed with 2% dry matter (w/w). To investigate fermentability, the hydrolysed filtrate was fermented using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The effects of the different parameters are described by response-surface modelling. The highest experimental sugar yield of 42.1 g per 100 g dry matter was obtained at 210 degrees C and 5.5 min residence time. Although the fermentabilities were good for all filtrates with yields greater than 90% of the yield obtained in a pure glucose reference solution, the pretreatment has a clear influence on the ethanol production rate. Late-Onset Erythropoietic Porphyria Caused by a Chromosome 18q Deletion in Erythroid Cells

The erythropoietic porphyrias, erythropoietic protoporphyria and congenital erythropoietic porphyria, result from germline mutations in the ferrochelatase gene and uroporphyrinogen III synthase gene, respectively. Both conditions normally present in childhood but rare cases with onset past the age of 40 y have been reported. Here we show that late-onset erythropoietic protoporphyria can be caused by deletion of the ferrochelatase gene in hematopoietic cells with clonal expansion as part of the myelodysplastic process. This is the first direct demonstration of porphyria produced by an acquired molecular defect restricted to one tissue. Some other cases of late-onset erythropoietic porphyria may be explained by a similar mechanism
