    Spin-dependent Quantum Interference in Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes with Ferromagnetic Contacts

    We report the experimental observation of spin-induced magnetoresistance in single-wall carbon nanotubes contacted with high-transparency ferromagnetic electrodes. In the linear regime the spin-induced magnetoresistance oscillates with gate voltage in quantitative agreement with calculations based on a Landauer-Buttiker model for independent electrons. Consistent with this interpretation, we find evidence for bias-induced oscillation in the spin-induced magnetoresistance signal on the scale of the level spacing in the nanotube. At higher bias, the spin-induced magnetoresistance disappears because of a sharp decrease in the effective spin-polarization injected from the ferromagnetic electrodes.Comment: Replaced with published versio

    Effects of Grassland Management on Herbage Lipid Composition and Consequences for Fatty Acids in Milk

    Herbage provides bulk feed and is the basis for ruminant nutrition. Herbage lipids, especially C18:3, are a major source of beneficial fatty acids (FA) in milk. These desired FA are unsaturated FA such as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), especially the isomer rumenic acid, and also vaccenic acid, both trans omega-7 FA (Ellen & Elgersma, 2004). As information on lipids in forages is scarce, effects were studied of N application level and regrowth period on the lipid concentration and FA composition of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), the most important forage in temperate climate zones. A linear relation had previously been found between C18:3 intake of cows stall-fed with fresh grass and the amount of omega-7 FA in milk (Elgersma et al., 2003)

    Composition and formation of the sleeve enveloping a central venous catheter

    AbstractPurpose:After catheterization, 42% to 100% of central venous catheters are surrounded by a “fibrin sleeve.” This sleeve has been considered the cause of catheter-related infections, withdrawal occlusion, and pulmonary embolism. The reactions between the vein wall and the catheter were studied. Methods: A silicone catheter was placed in the anterior caval vein of 123 rats. After in situ fixation at scheduled intervals, the pathologic changes were studied on semi-serial histologic sections by means of light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In 36 rats, the catheter was withdrawn immediately; in 72 rats, it was left in situ up to 6 months; and in 15 rats, the study was performed up to 10 months after withdrawal of a catheter that had remained in situ for 6 months. Results: In the group in which the catheter was withdrawn immediately, mural thrombi disappeared by day 7. In the group in which the catheter remained in situ, thrombi remained around the proximal portion of the catheter. This pericatheter thrombosis (PCT) was invaded by migrating and proliferating smooth muscle cells (SMCs), originating from an injured vein wall, and transformed from day 7 into a tissue composed predominantly of SMCs and collagen and covered by endothelial cells. Later, the number of cells decreased, and the relative amount of collagen increased. Up to 10 months after withdrawal of the catheter, the collapsed sleeve was still present within the vein. Conclusion: The sleeve around a central venous catheter is not a fibrin sleeve, but a stable cellular-collagen tissue covered by endothelium. It is mainly formed by smooth muscle cells migrating from the injured vein wall into the early pericatheter thrombus. (J Vasc Surg 1998;28:260-271.

    Viewership footprint for a low-resource, student-centred collaborative video platform to teach orthopaedics in southern Africa

    Background. Institutions are increasingly using technology to augment the class learning experience of medical students. Especially in Africa, local content is key to allow insights and knowledge to emerge and build transformative capacity for students and patients. There is currently no peer-reviewed video content produced by students with the aim of providing education on orthopaedic topics for medical students and patients in this region.Objectives. To evaluate the demographic and geographical viewership as well as video-specific statistics of orthopaedic teaching videos for medical students on a YouTube channel, with the expressed aim of informing future content production.Methods. Videos were produced by South African (SA) medical students as a problem-based collaborative project. Student-owned smartphones and various types of free video editing software were used to produce these videos, which were then assessed by a group of orthopaedic specialists and uploaded onto a YouTube channel (UCTeach). The analytical reports of this channel generated by Google and YouTube were analysed regarding watch time per day (minutes), average view duration (minutes), most watched videos, top geographies, age and gender.Results. A total of 83 videos were uploaded to the UCTeach Ortho channel during a 2-year period, with a total watch time of 857 062 minutes and 337 983 views. The majority of viewers were between the ages of 18 and 34 years (85%). India had the most views (n=69 089), followed by the USA (n=66 257) and SA (n=21 882). Most of the videos were watched on mobile phones (n=183 299) and computers (n=128 228). The most watched video, produced in April 2016, was on physiological and pathological gait, with 51 314 views.Conclusions. Our study provides proof of concept for a new educational material creation and dissemination strategy. A low-cost local collaborative orthopaedic video project by medical students for medical students can lead to high view counts and watch time on YouTube. It is accessible to audiences in low-, middle- and high-income countries. The students’ educational videos also reached a global audience consistently over a 3-year period

    Atomic Hydrogen and Star Formation in the Bridge/Ring Interacting Galaxy Pair NGC 7714/7715 (Arp 284)

    We present high spatial resolution 21 cm HI maps of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 7714/7715. We detect a massive (2 x 10**9 M(sun)) HI bridge connecting the galaxies that is parallel to but offset from the stellar bridge. A chain of HII regions traces the gaseous bridge, with H-alpha peaks near but not on the HI maxima. An HI tidal tail is also detected to the east of the smaller galaxy NGC 7715, similarly offset from a stellar tail. The strong partial stellar ring on the eastern side of NGC 7714 has no HI counterpart, but on the opposite side of NGC 7714 there is a 10**9 M(sun) HI loop 11 kpc in radius. Within the NGC 7714 disk, clumpy HI gas is observed associated with star formation regions. Redshifted HI absorption is detected towards the starburst nucleus. We compare the observed morphology and gas kinematics with gas dynamical models in which a low-mass companion has an off-center prograde collision with the outer disk of a larger galaxy. These simulations suggest that the bridge in NGC 7714/7715 is a hybrid between bridges seen in systems like M51 and the purely gaseous `splash' bridges found in ring galaxies like the Cartwheel. The offset between the stars and gas in the bridge may be due to dissipative cloud-cloud collisions occuring during the impact of the two gaseous disks.Comment: 31 pages, Latex, 11 figures, to be published in the July 10, 1997 issue of the Astrophysical Journa

    Geoheritage, a National Inventory in France

    International audienceGood protection measures for geological heritage should begin with an inventory of geosites. In France, for example, a law enacted in 2002 grants formal recognition to the notion of geological heritage. An inventory and evaluation were then established on a region-by-region basis. By April 2007, the French Ministry of Environment launched the inventory programme for the nation’s geological heritage and the data are now being collected at a regional scale. The data are being gathered and homogenised, and then transferred to the French National Museum of Natural History for examination.The ratified site data are stored and available for public use on a website (http://inpn.mnhn.fr) in a similar structure to natural data that are also processed and stored (flora, fauna, ecosystems, habitats). Today, protecting global heritage is understood as a dynamic process.
