    Solutions for IPv6-based mobility in the EU project MobyDick

Current solutions on Mobile IPv6 and other related QoS and AAA matters do not offer the security and quality users have come to take for granted. The EU IST project Moby Dick has taken on the challenge of providing a solution that integrates QoS, mobility and AAA in a heterogeneous access environment. This paper focuses on the mobility part of the project, describes and justifies the handover approach taken, shows how QoS-aware and secure handover is achieved, and introduces the project's paging concept. It shows that a transition to a fully integrated IP-RAN and IP-Backbone has become a distinct option for the future.Publicad

    SDN for Public Safety Networks

    Commercial users of modern communications networks have benefited from a huge progress of the related technologies. However, Public Safety Networks (PSNs) and devices did not follow the same trend. Very often, they still rely on voice or low speed data communications, tempting first responders to use their own private devices when they need to exchange real-time video or geolocation information. Under this consideration, national authorities and specialized organizations have recently initiated the integration of more recent technologies, such as cellular Long Term Evolution (LTE), even though they need further developments to cope with the harsh usages that safety personnel may face. This report proposes to move the evolution of these networks towards the recent evolution of networking technologies started with Software Defined networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). Based on the requirements derived from a standardized earthquake scenario and a study of the main improvements brought by this network softwarization, it analyzes how SDN and NFV can solve part of the issues raised with commercial LTE and enhance PSN communications. The capabilities of these new technologies are applied to a list of characteristics required by mission-critical networks, e.g., rapid deployment, reliability, security or resilience, taking advantage of features such as the separation between control and data planes or the simplified dynamic resources management. The resulting enhancements are then illustrated using example frameworks published in the literature for Cloud Radio Access Networks, resilient backhaul solution , isolated base stations, SDN-based architecture or Service Function Chaining

    Semantic IoT Solutions - A Developer Perspective

    Semantic technologies have recently gained significant support in a number of communities, in particular the IoT community. An important problem to be solved is that, on the one hand, it is clear that the value of IoT increases significantly with the availability of information from a wide variety of domains. On the other hand, existing solutions target specific applications or application domains and there is no easy way of sharing information between the resulting silos. Thus, a solution is needed to enable interoperability across information silos.     Architectures for Cognitive Radio Testbeds and Demonstrators – An Overview

    Wireless communication standards are developed at an ever-increasing rate of pace, and significant amounts of effort is put into research for new communication methods and concepts. On the physical layer, such topics include MIMO, cooperative communication, and error control coding, whereas research on the medium access layer includes link control, network topology, and cognitive radio. At the same time, implementations are moving from traditional fixed hardware architectures towards software, allowing more efficient development. Today, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and regular desktop computers are fast enough to handle complete baseband processing chains, and there are several platforms, both open-source and commercial, providing such solutions. The aims of this paper is to give an overview of five of the available platforms and their characteristics, and compare the features and performance measures of the different systems
