    After the oral treatment of all p1glets 3 - 5 days after birth with Baycox 5% we found a better intestine health in the suckling and in the flatdeck period. ln this study there was a reduced diarrhoea dunng suckling and in the flatdeck.With the Baycox• therapeutic the vaccination program against E. coli and Clostridium perfringens Typ C and the application of antibiotica to the weaners could be decreased for nearly 40 % during the breeding period.     Ultraviolet downconverting phosphor for use with silicon CCD imagers

    The properties and application of a UV downconverting phosphor (coronene) to silicon charge coupled devices are discussed. Measurements of the absorption spectrum have been extended to below 1000 A, and preliminary results indicate the existence of useful response to at least 584 A. The average conversion efficiency of coronene was measured to be ~20% at 2537 A. Imagery at 3650 A using a backside illuminated 800 X 800 CCD coated with coronene is presented

    The CRESST Dark Matter Search

    We present first competitive results on WIMP dark matter using the phonon-light-detection technique. A particularly strong limit for WIMPs with coherent scattering results from selecting a region of the phonon-light plane corresponding to tungsten recoils. The observed count rate in the neutron band is compatible with the rate expected from neutron background. CRESST is presently being upgraded with a 66 channel SQUID readout system, a neutron shield and a muon veto system.     Detection of the Natural Alpha Decay of Tungsten

    The natural alpha decay of 180W has been unambiguously detected for the first time. The alpha peak is found in a (gamma,beta and neutron)-free background spectrum. This has been achieved by the simultaneous measurement of phonon and light signals with the CRESST cryogenic detectors. A half-life of T1/2 = (1.8 +- 0.2) x 10^18 y and an energy release of Q = (2516.4 +- 1.1 (stat.) +- 1.2 (sys.)) keV have been measured.     Fractional Operators, Dirichlet Averages, and Splines

    Fractional differential and integral operators, Dirichlet averages, and splines of complex order are three seemingly distinct mathematical subject areas addressing different questions and employing different methodologies. It is the purpose of this paper to show that there are deep and interesting relationships between these three areas. First a brief introduction to fractional differential and integral operators defined on Lizorkin spaces is presented and some of their main properties exhibited. This particular approach has the advantage that several definitions of fractional derivatives and integrals coincide. We then introduce Dirichlet averages and extend their definition to an infinite-dimensional setting that is needed to exhibit the relationships to splines of complex order. Finally, we focus on splines of complex order and, in particular, on cardinal B-splines of complex order. The fundamental connections to fractional derivatives and integrals as well as Dirichlet averages are presented

    Anomalous transverse acoustic phonon broadening in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg_1/3Nb_2/3)O_3

    The intrinsic linewidth ΓTA\Gamma_{TA} of the transverse acoustic (TA) phonon observed in the relaxor ferroelectric compound Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3)0.8_{2/3})_{0.8}Ti0.2_{0.2}O3_3 (PMN-20%PT) begins to broaden with decreasing temperature around 650 K, nearly 300 K above the ferroelectric transition temperature TcT_c (360\sim 360 K). We speculate that this anomalous behavior is directly related to the condensation of polarized, nanometer-sized, regions at the Burns temperature TdT_d. We also observe the ``waterfall'' anomaly previously seen in pure PMN, in which the transverse optic (TO) branch appears to drop precipitously into the TA branch at a finite momentum transfer qwf0.15q_{wf} \sim 0.15 \AA1^{-1}. The waterfall feature is seen even at temperatures above TdT_d. This latter result suggests that the PNR exist as dynamic entities above TdT_d.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Gross total but not incomplete resection of glioblastoma prolongs survival in the era of radiochemotherapy†

    Background This prospective multicenter study assessed the prognostic influence of the extent of resection when compared with biopsy only in a contemporary patient population with newly diagnosed glioblastoma. Patients and methods Histology, O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status, and clinical data were centrally analyzed. Survival analyses were carried out with the Kaplan-Meier method. Prognostic factors were assessed with proportional hazard models. Results Of 345 patients, 273 underwent open tumor resection and 72 biopsies; 125 patients had gross total resections (GTRs) and 148, incomplete resections. Surgery-related morbidity was lower after biopsy (1.4% versus 12.1%, P = 0.007). 64.3% of patients received radiotherapy and chemotherapy (RT plus CT), 20.0% RT alone, 4.3% CT alone, and 11.3% best supportive care as an initial treatment. Patients ≤60 years with a Karnofsky performance score (KPS) of ≥90 were more likely to receive RT plus CT (P < 0.01). Median overall survival (OS) (progression free survival; PFS) ranged from 33.2 months (15 months) for patients with MGMT-methylated tumors after GTR and RT plus CT to 3.0 months (2.4 months) for biopsied patients receiving supportive care only. Favorable prognostic factors in multivariate analyses for OS were age ≤60 years [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.52; P < 0.001], preoperative KPS of ≥80 (HR = 0.55; P < 0.001), GTR (HR = 0.60; P = 0.003), MGMT promoter methylation (HR = 0.44; P < 0.001), and RT plus CT (HR = 0.18, P < 0.001); patients undergoing incomplete resection did not better than those receiving biopsy only (HR = 0.85; P = 0.31). Conclusions The value of incomplete resection remains questionable. If GTR cannot be safely achieved, biopsy only might be used as an alternative surgical strateg

    Coexistence of the Critical Slowing Down and Glassy Freezing in Relaxor Ferroelectrics

    We have developed a dynamical model for the dielectric response in relaxor ferroelectrics which explicitly takes into account the coexistence of the critical slowing down and glassy freezing. The application of the model to the experiment in PMN allowed for the reconstruction of the nonequilibrium spin glass state order parameter and its comparison with the results of recent NMR experiment (Blinc et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, No. 2 (1999)). It is shown that the degree of the local freezing is rather small even at temperatures where the field-cooled permittivity exceeds the frequency dependent permittivity by an order of magnitude. This observation indicates the significant role of the critical slowing down (accompanying the glass freezing) in the system dynamics. Also the theory predicts an important interrelationship between the frequency dependent permittivity and the zero-field-cooled permittivity, which proved to be consistent with the experiment in PMN (A. Levstik et. al., Phys. Rev. B 57, 11204 (1998))
