After the oral treatment of all p1glets 3 - 5 days after birth with Baycox 5% we found a better intestine health in the suckling and in the flatdeck period. ln this study there was a reduced diarrhoea dunng suckling and in the flatdeck.With the Baycox• therapeutic the vaccination program against E. coli and Clostridium perfringens Typ C and the application of antibiotica to the weaners could be decreased for nearly 40 % during the breeding period. AII pigs got better health status with higher weight gain and uniformity
Ultraviolet downconverting phosphor for use with silicon CCD imagers
The properties and application of a UV downconverting phosphor (coronene) to silicon charge coupled devices are discussed. Measurements of the absorption spectrum have been extended to below 1000 A, and preliminary results indicate the existence of useful response to at least 584 A. The average conversion efficiency of coronene was measured to be ~20% at 2537 A. Imagery at 3650 A using a backside illuminated 800 X 800 CCD coated with coronene is presented
The 8-14-μ Appearance of Venus Before the 1964 Conjunction
In an earlier paper (Murray, Wildey, and Westphal 1963) we have described the detailed
mapping of the 8-14-μ radiation from Venus using the 200-inch Hale telescope.
This paper extends that work over a period of about 7 months from December 15, 1963,
to June 6, 1964. Detailed maps for 6 days are presented that show the morphology of
the upper-atmosphere brightness temperature and illustrate a number of anomalous
features near the cusps. The problem of atmospheric extinction and the derived brightness
temperature is discussed
Lifetime of Stringy de Sitter Vacua
In this note we perform a synopsis of the life-times from vacuum decay of
several de Sitter vacuum constructions in string/M-theory which have a single
dS minimum arising from lifting a pre-existing AdS extremum and no other local
minima existent after lifting. For these vacua the decay proceeds via a
Coleman--De Luccia instanton towards the universal Minkowski minimum at
infinite volume. This can be calculated using the thin--wall approximation,
provided the cosmological constant of the local dS minimum is tuned
sufficiently small. We compare the estimates for the different model classes
and find them all stable in the sense of exponentially long life times as long
as they have a very small cosmological constant and a scale of supersymmetry

The use of reinforcement learning algorithms to meet the challenges of an artificial pancreas
Blood glucose control, for example, in diabetes mellitus or severe illness, requires strict adherence to a protocol of food, insulin administration and exercise personalized to each patient. An artificial pancreas for automated treatment could boost quality of glucose control and patients' independence. The components required for an artificial pancreas are: i) continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), ii) smart controllers and iii) insulin pumps delivering the optimal amount of insulin. In recent years, medical devices for CGM and insulin administration have undergone rapid progression and are now commercially available. Yet, clinically available devices still require regular patients' or caregivers' attention as they operate in open-loop control with frequent user intervention. Dosage-calculating algorithms are currently being studied in intensive care patients [1] , for short overnight control to supplement conventional insulin delivery [2] , and for short periods where patients rest and follow a prescribed food regime [3] . Fully automated algorithms that can respond to the varying activity levels seen in outpatients, with unpredictable and unreported food intake, and which provide the necessary personalized control for individuals is currently beyond the state-of-the-art. Here, we review and discuss reinforcement learning algorithms, controlling insulin in a closed-loop to provide individual insulin dosing regimens that are reactive to the immediate needs of the patient
Fractional Operators, Dirichlet Averages, and Splines
Fractional differential and integral operators, Dirichlet averages, and
splines of complex order are three seemingly distinct mathematical subject
areas addressing different questions and employing different methodologies. It
is the purpose of this paper to show that there are deep and interesting
relationships between these three areas. First a brief introduction to
fractional differential and integral operators defined on Lizorkin spaces is
presented and some of their main properties exhibited. This particular approach
has the advantage that several definitions of fractional derivatives and
integrals coincide. We then introduce Dirichlet averages and extend their
definition to an infinite-dimensional setting that is needed to exhibit the
relationships to splines of complex order. Finally, we focus on splines of
complex order and, in particular, on cardinal B-splines of complex order. The
fundamental connections to fractional derivatives and integrals as well as
Dirichlet averages are presented
Laser interferometry with translucent and absorbing mechanical oscillators
The sensitivity of laser interferometers can be pushed into regimes that
enable the direct observation of quantum behaviour of mechanical oscillators.
In the past, membranes with subwavelength thickness (thin films) have been
proposed as high-mechanical-quality, low-thermal-noise oscillators. Thin films
from a homogenous material, however, generally show considerable light
transmission accompanied by heating due to light absorption, which typically
reduces the mechanical quality and limits quantum opto-mechanical experiments
in particular at low temperatures. In this work, we experimentally analyze a
Michelson-Sagnac interferometer including a translucent silicon nitride (SiN)
membrane with subwavelength thickness. We find that such an interferometer
provides an operational point being optimally suited for quantum
opto-mechanical experiments with translucent oscillators. In case of a balanced
beam splitter of the interferometer, the membrane can be placed at a node of
the electro-magnetic field, which simultaneously provides lowest absorption and
optimum laser noise rejection at the signal port. We compare the optical and
mechanical model of our interferometer with experimental data and confirm that
the SiN membrane can be coupled to a laser power of the order of one Watt at
1064 nm without significantly degrading the membrane's quality factor of the
order 10^6, at room temperature
Age-Related Success with Elective Single versus Double Blastocyst Transfer
Background. Although the optimal outcome of assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a healthy singleton pregnancy, the rate of twin gestation from ART in women over the age of 35 is persistently high. Methods/Findings. We compared clinical pregnancy rates (PRs), ongoing pregnancy/live birth rates, and multiple gestation rates (MGRs) in 108 women who chose elective single blastocyst transfer (eSBT) to 415 women who chose elective double blastocyst transfer (eDBT) at a hospital-based IVF center. There was no significant difference in PR between eSBT and eDBT (57.4% versus 50.2%, P = 0.47) nor between eSBT and eDBT within each age group: <35, 35–37, 38–40, and >40. The risk of multiple gestations, however, was greatly increased between eSBT and eDBT (1.6 versus 32.4%, P < 0.00005), and this difference did not vary across age groups. Conclusion(s). Women undergoing eDBT are at uniformly high risk of multiple gestation regardless of age. eSBT appears to significantly lower the risk of multiple gestation without compromising PR
